  1. 1.  WATTENGEL, Andrew J was born about 1847 in Bavaria, Germany (son of WATTENGEL, Andrew and Susan); died on 23 Feb 1929 in Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY.

    Andrew J. Wattengel, 82 years old,
    died early this morning at the family
    home, 1225 Niagara street, after a long
    illness. Mr. Wattengel was well known
    among the older residents of the city,
    having resided here and in the former
    village of La Salle almost all his life.
    funeral services will be held from the
    home on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30
    o'clock. Interment will be in Oakwood
    cemetery.
    Mr. Wattengel was born in Bavaria,
    Germany, a son of the late Andrew and
    Susan Wattengel. As a child he came to
    this country with his parents and set-
    tled in the former village of La Salle.
    When a young man he conducted a
    peach farm there and acted as New
    York Central station agent.
    Forty-six years ago he came to this
    city and operated a grovery store and
    tavern at the corner of Main and Sec-
    ond streets. Some 40 years ago he ser-
    ed the city as supervisor for several
    terms and later as city alderman. He
    was a staunch Republican. At the
    time Mr. Wattengel was an alderman
    the Liberty flag-pole was etected at
    the foot of Falls street, bearing the
    names of the members of the city coun-
    cil. It is still there. He is the last
    man to die whose name appears on
    the tablet of the historic pole.
    Mr. Wattengel was also one of the
    oldest members of the Niagara Falls
    Exempt Firemen's association. He saw
    active service with the old Third street
    Volunteer Fire company, being a fore-
    man of the hand pump brigade. He
    was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge.
    Mr. Wattengel's first marriage was
    with Abby Albert, of Buffalo, who died
    many years ago. He is survived by his
    second wife, Mary Zeiger Wattengel;
    two sons, John A., of San Francisco,
    Calif., and Frank A., of this city; two
    daughters, Mrs. John C.. Hulls and Mrs.
    Weslie Nelson, both of this city; two
    grandchildren, Jerald Andrew and
    Donna Howard, both of this city; one
    brother, Martin, of North Tonawanda,
    and four sisters, Mrs. Susan Dick, of
    Tonawanda; Mrs. Helena Oslander and
    Mrs. Elizabeth Zeiger, both of this
    city and Mrs. Mary Morrison of Angola.
