WILSON — Alice Rance of Wilson, NY, died on Tuesday, July 17, 2012. She died her way and her time while under Hospice care and with her family present. Born in Moose Run, PA, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude Anne (Ebert) and John Lewis Walter.
At the age of 41, Mrs. Rance went back to school to become an LPN and worked at many local hospitals and out of state at Mass General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Mrs. Rance retired from Newfane Hospital. After the death of her husband, she became a traveler extraordinaire. She could be found traveling from Florida to Alaska, NYC and on to the bad lands where she purchased her trade mark red cowboy hat. She was a beloved member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Wilson, various local senior groups, The Gallon Club, a former red hatter and a member of the Knit Wits who knit caps for infants and also a quilter for Lutheran Missions.
Mrs. Rance is survived by her son, Rev. John (Rev. Sondra) Rance of Pendleton, NY; her daughter, Gertrude Steblein of Wilson, NY; eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 61 years, Lawrence Rance; brother, Winfield Scott Walter; sisters, M. Louise Decker and Sara Shubert Gray; granddaughter, Cheryl Swafford; and her son-in-law, Bob Steblein.
Because of her time in nursing, she decided many years ago to donate her body to the Anatomical Gift Program, University at Buffalo, School of Medicine. A memorial service to celebrate Alice's life will be held on Saturday, July 28, 2012 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 220 Young St., Wilson, NY 14172 at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate blood to the ARC and memorials may be made in memory of Alice to St. Paul's Church or The Wilson #1 Fire Company.
