Two men, one of whom was
expecting his wife back from
a European trip today, were
fatally injured in traffic accidents
here and in the immediate
vicinity Thursday.
The men were:
John Universal, 58, of 1708
16th St.
Frank N. Porreca, 72, of
1142 LaSalle Ave.
Mr. Universal died today at
2"30 a.m. at Memorial Hospi-
tal, where he was taken after
he was struck by a car at
South Avenue and 15th Street
shortly before 11 p.m. Thurs-
day.
Lt. Stanley Olszewski and
Traffic Officers William Patti
and John Jurkin said Mr. Uni-
versal suffered broken legs,
abrasions and cuts.
Was Riding Bicycle
Mr. Porreca was pronounced
dead on arrival at Memorial
Hospital, where he was taken
after a bicycle he was pedal-
ing became involved in a col-
lision with a dump truck at
Six Corners in the afternoon.
Mr. Porreca suffered a cere-
bral hemorrhage and pos-
sibly a broken neck, it was
reported.
City police said Mr. Uni-
versal was walking on a cross-
walk from one curb to an-
other when he was struck by
a car operated by Mrs. Rita
E. Stivers, 43, of 1336 Pierce
Ave.
Police said Mrs. Stivers was
issued a summons for failing
to give a pedestrian right of
way.
Due From Europe
It was reported Mr. Univer-
sal's wife, Kathleen, was
scheduled to arrive at Mon-
treal, Que., today after a
European tour.
State police reported Mr.
Porreca had pedaled his bicycle
out of Porter Road into
the Six Corners intersection
when it collided w i t h the
truck operated by William
Walters, 36. of 9345
Avenue, who was headed east
in Packard Road.
Police s a i d Walters was
charged with driving a truck
without a chauffeur's license.

Mr. Universal's d e a th
brought to seven the number
of persons killed in traffic ac-
cidents here this year com-
pared to five for the corres-
ponding period in the city
last year.
Mr. Porreca's death increas-
ed the county traffic facality
toll, exclusive of this city, to
25 for this year compared to
19 for the same period in the
county last year.
Coroner F. Eugene Ingram
listed both fatilities as acci=
dental deaths.
Employed as Machinist
Mr. Universal, a native of
this city, had been employed
as a machinist with the Union
Carbide chemicals co. for 21
years.
He was a member of the Ni-
agara Council, Knights of
Columbus; the Bishop Duffy
High School Men's Club and
Sacred Heart Church.
Surviving, besides his wife
are four sons, Brian Univer-
sal, this city; Dennis Univer-
sal, Germany; Patrick Univer-
sal, Scotland; and John Uni-
versal, this city; a daughter,
Moira Universal, this city; a
brother and sister, Michael
Universal and Mrs. Haddie
Dryja, both of this city.
Funeral arrangements have
not been completed
Retired From DuPont
A native of Torricella Pelig-
na, Province de Chieti, Italy,
Mr. Porreca had lived in this
city since 1910. He was a fire-
man for the DuPont Co. for
26 years before his retire-
ment in 1952. He was a mem-
ber of the company's 25 Year
Club and St. Joseph's Church.
Surviving are two brothers,
Carmen and Dominick M.
Porreca, this city, and two
sisters, Mrs. Louis Napoleone,
this city, and Mrs.. Dominick
Palizzi, Denver Colo. He was
the brother of the late Gui-
seppe and Pantoleone Por-
reca.
Funeral services will be
held at 8:45 a.m. Monday at
the Spallino Funeral Home
and at 9:15 o'clock at St.
Joseph's Church. Burial will
be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
