Final Rites Set For 104 Year-old Wilson Farmer
Worked in Garden Until Time of Death; Proud of Voting/Record
WILSON, June 14 - Funeral services will be held tomorrow for William C. Rohring, 104, who died late Saturday at the home of his daughter in this village. A native of Stettin, Germany, Mr. Rohring came to Wilson at the age of 24 with his bride, the former Minnie Kruger, and settled on a farm in Braley road. He engaged In general farming until his wife's death 16 years ago when he moved into the village proper to live with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Seymour A. Ereon. He continued to participate in farming by tending the garden plot at the Ereon home, resisting efforts of his children to provide him with a mechanical cultivator by telling them, "A shovel and hoe are good enough for me." A staunch Republican, Mr. Rohring voted in every election from the year he settled in the area, 1873. He took pleasure in reminiscing to friends how he voted against Grover Cleveland. His last ballot was cast in the 1952 presidential election for Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was a veteran of service in the German Army during the Franco-Prussian War and served with the army of occupation in France in 1870. During the conflict, he won a medal for bravery. Mr. Rohring, who would have been 105 on Dec. 5, was also proud of the fact that he did not drink. "I believe in God, and I don't touch alcohol," he said, many times. Until the last few years, he was able to read even the fine print in the newspapers by using glasses, but recently, he had to be content with scanning the headlines. Mrs. Ereon said that headlines in recent weeks made him shake his head, but he voiced few complaints. With him when he died Saturday were Mrs. Ereon and another daughter, Mrs. Emma Baker, also of Wilson. Other survivors include a third daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Wilson, also of Wilson, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at the Ereon home, Wilcox St., at 1 p.m. and at North Ridge Lutheran Church at 2:30 p. m., the Rev. Carl Oldach officiating. Interment will be in North Ridge Cemetery.
