    Elks, in the Elks timple , Main
    street and Elk place, yesterday afternoon.
    A feature of the ceremonies
    was the presentation of the Elks
    Medal of Valor to Mrs. Anns May
    Bums, 8427 Frontier avenue, widow
    of Lieutenant John R. Burns, first
    member of the lodge to give his lif e
    for his country in World War 2. He
    was killed in action in Italy last
    May 19.

    KILLED IN ACTION
    - First
    Lieutenant John Reed Burns, Jr.,
    was killed in action In the Italian
    theater of war on May 19. according
    to word received by his wife,
    Mrs. Anna May Burns, of 8427
    Frontier avenue.
    He enlisted in the army April
    22, 1942, and for a while served
    with an anti-tank company In
    England with the rank of corporal
    He was returned to this
    country to attend the Infantry
    Officers Candidate school at Fort
    Benning, Ga., from which he was
    graduated on July 29, 1943, with
    the commission of second lieutenant.
    Again sent overseas, he
    served in North Africa and later
    in Italy with the Fifth Army.
    ° Before entering the service he
    was employed by the Electro-
    Metalurglcal company. He was
    a member of the Niagara Falls
    Elks lodge.
    The lieutenant was born in
    Punxsatawny, Pa., on January 14,
    1917. His parents are Mr. and
    Mrs. John R. Burns, Sr., of Sheffield,
    Pa. He is also survived by
    -a sister. Mrs. Leon Carlson, of
    Smethport. Pa., and Lieutenant
    Donald C. Burns, now serving
    overseas with the Army Alr
    Forces.
