NIAGARA FALLS — Mary L. (Moskal) Scepanski, a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY, died on Friday December 30, 2011. Mary was born on December 6, 1922, to Frank and Ursula (Bodzioch) Moskal.

Mary graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1940 and from the E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. She served in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts and Lovell General Hospital. It was during this time that she met her husband, Alexander Scepanski, a former World War II POW, who predeceased her on October 9, 1994. Following their marriage on April 27, 1946, Al and Mary settled in Niagara Falls and raised their three daughters, Judith (Jerald) Caira of the Town of Wheatfield, Sally (Robert) Rycroft of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Karen (Neocles) Athanasiades of East Setauket, New York. Mary worked as a registered nurse at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for many years retiring in 1974.

Mary survived cancer twice in the 1990's and went on to live a full and active life. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, the Mt. Carmel Seniors, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Our Lady of Lebanon Senior Group. She enjoyed luncheons and various events with her friends at the John Duke Senior Center. Mary was an expert knitter and made numerous afghans, many with intricate floral designs for family members. Most recently, she knitted and donated squares to Roswell Park Cancer Institute which were made into blankets for patients. Above all, Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother whose life revolved around her family.

In addition to her daughters, Mary is survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Robinson of Fairport, NY, Mary Ellen Caira of Elkridge, MD, Sara Rycroft of Washington, DC, Adam Rycroft of Los Angeles, CA, Katherine Athanasiades and Christina Athanasiades, both of Washington, DC. Mary is also survived by her great-granddaughter, Summer Lynne Robinson; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Elizabeth (Michael) Parsnick, whom Mary thought of as her fourth daughter. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was predeceased by her sisters, Lottie (late Anthony) Dobrasz, Stella (late John) Jesz, Sophie (late John) Peczkowski and Julia (late Zenon) Skurski.
