Gary R. Ankenbauer, of Niagara Falls, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. He was born in Niagara Falls on August 22, 1949, the son of the late Robert L. Ankenbauer and Marion G. (Eydt) Ankenbauer. He attended local schools and graduated from LaSalle Senior High School.
After high school Gary served honorably in the U.S. Army for 20 years, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. He served as an infantryman in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War, and during the latter half of his distinguished military career he twice earned the prestigious James A. Carroll award for exceptional service managing Army Officer and Non-Commissioned Officer Clubs. After retiring from the military Gary continued in the food service field as Director of Restaurants for All American Plazas, Inc, a chain of travel plazas with locations in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio and New York.
Gary was an avid fisherman, a huge Buffalo Bills fan and loved telling jokes and stories. He also enjoyed golfing, cooking for his family, and watching westerns and war movies.
He was preceded in death by his parents (Robert and Marion Ankenbauer) and his sister Donna (Ankenbauer) Griffith.
Gary is survived by his loving companion of 34 years, Mary Beaman; his four children: Scott Ankenbauer (ID), Mandy Padilla (CA), Amber Given, (ID) and Cory Ankenbauer (ID); and his two stepchildren: David Beaman (KY) and Jennifer Intrieri (PA). Gary is also survived by several extended family members, 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
In honor of Gary’s wishes, there will be no public services, and burial will be private.

GRACE EVANGELICAL Lutheran Church
was the setting Saturday (Dec. 18, 1971) for the
marriage of Miss Wendy L. Burkhardt and Sgt.
Gary R. Ankenbauer, U.S. Army.
The Rev. E. Werner Wienreich officiated at
the 5 p.m. double ring nuptials.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Raymond H. Liebeck, 137 Kiel St., North
Tonawanda, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Robert L. Ankenbauer Jr., 525 72nd St.
GIVEN IN MARRIAGE by Mr. Liebeck, the
;bride wore a gown with Chantilly lace bodice and
lantern sleeves and lace appliques on the
.hemline of the skirt and satin train. Her chapel
.veil fell from a cap headpiece.
Mrs. Thomas McCabe, matron of honor, wore
a gown of blue velvet and silk. She wore a velvet
bow headpiece which secured her veil and she
carried a matching muff. Attired in gowns of
dark purple velvet with lavender silk bodices
were the bridesmaids: Mrs. Ronald Griffith,
sister of the bridegroom; Miss Roberta
Burkhardt, sister of the bride, and Miss Patricia
.Beaver. Julie Barnett, flower girl, was similarly
attired in blue.
RONALD GARDNER was best man. Ushers
were Raymond Schlee, Ronald Griffith and
Victor Eydt. John Liebeck was ringbearer.
A reception was held at Dom Polski Hall,
North Tonawanda.
The couple will reside at Ft. Benning, Ga.,
where the bridegroom is stationed.
