    Henry J. Balling Sr., founder
    of Balling Bros, construction
    company, which built many
    schools and churches in the Buffalo
    Catholic Diocese, died last
    night at DeGraff Memorial Hospital.
    He was 67 years old.
    The first aid squad of the
    North Tonawanda Fire Department
    was called at 6:45 p.m. to
    Mr. Balling's home at 59 Whiting
    St., North Tonawanda,
    where he was stricken. Oxygen
    was administered and he was
    taken to DeGraff, where he died
    about four hours later.
    A relative said Mr. Balling
    had worked as usual yesterday
    and did not complain about any
    ailments until he was stricken.
    Death was attributed to a ruptured
    artery.
    A native of the City of Tonawanda,
    Mr. Balling founded the
    construction concern at 454
    Young St., Tonawanda, in the
    1930s. The concern employed as
    many as 60 employes during
    peak construction periods

    Francis of Assist Church;
    Mount St. Mary auditorium;
    the Riverview and Mullen
    schools; Cardinal O'Hara,
    Bishop Gibbons, Bishop Neumann,
    Bishop Timon. and
    Orchard Park High Schools;
    Rosary Hill and Villa Maria Colleges;
    St. Gregory the Great
    Church; St. Aloysius Church,
    Springville; St. Margaret's
    Church, Buffalo; the Ascension
    Church parish hall and
    gym; Our Lady of Victory Hospital
    and Nardin Academy.
    He is survived by his wife,
    Mrs. Alma Brick Balling; two
    sons, Henry J. Balling Jr. of
    Orchard Park and Paul D.
    Balling, a North Tonawanda
    alderman; four daughters,
    Mrs. William G. Tucker of the
    City of Tonawanda, and the
    Misses Rita M , Martha K. and
    Alma P. Balling, all of North
    Tonawanda, and 11 grandchildren.
    Also surviving are six brothers,
    Joseph and Walter of the
    City of Tonawanda, Leo of
    Amherst, and Leonard,
    Norman and Jacob all of North

    Tonawanda; four sisters, Mrs.
    Spencer Carney of North Tonawanda;
    Mrs. Archibald Clifford
    of the City of Tonawanda,
    and Mrs. Francis Brown and
    Mrs. Florence Karkow, both of
    Englewood, Fla.
    Mr. Balling was a member of
    Ascension Church, North Tonawanda,
    Knights of Columbus
    Twin City Council 413; Fourth
    Degree Assembly and the
    Bishop's committee of the Laity
    Laity.
    He was a past president of the
    Boys' Club of the Tonawandas
    Inc. and was a member of its
    advisory board. He was a
    member of the Chamber of
    Commerce of the Tonawandas;
    a charter member of
    the Town Club of the Tonawandas;
    a member of the Construction
    Industry Employers
    Association; Bricklayers Union,
    Tonawanda Local 49; Men's
    Sustaining Societies of the Mercy
    Hospitals; Board of Advisors
    of Rosary Hill and Villa
    Maria Colleges and Marygrove
    College. Detroit, Mich.
    He was an honorary member
    of the Notre Dame Alumni Club
    of Buffalo; a charter member
    of the St. Ignatius Retreat
    House in Clarence, N.Y., and
    also was a charter member of
    the Mother of Mercy Retreat
    House and a member of St.
    Columban Retreat League
    Hamp Funeral Home Inc., 37
    Adam St., City of Tonawanda,
    is in charge of arrangements.
    Services are scheduled for 10
    a.m. Thursday in Ascension
    Church, North Tonawanda.

    Mr. Balling worked as bricklayer for
    Morris and A l l a n , building contractors
    He was talking over some working

    plans with his family when he stepped
    i n t o the kitchen and fell dead. He
    was born ln Germany and lived here
    for 43 years. Surviving are a wife.
    eight sons. M. Joheph, Henry, Fred,
    Leo, Leonard, Walter, Norman and
    Jacob Balling, Jr. four daughters.
    Florence and Gertrude Balling, Mrs.
    Spencer Carney and Mrs. Miles Brown
    and three grandchildren, all of the
    Tonawandas. He was president of the
    Holy Name Society of St. Francis
    church and of the Bricklayers' Union.
    No. 49, of the Tonawandas, at tne
    time of his death. Funeral services
    will be held Monday morning at 8:30
    o'clock from the residence and a t 9
    o'clock at St. Francis church. interment
    will be in St. Francis cemetery.

    will officiate.

    Mrs. Magdalena Balling, 74. of
    342 Grove St., fifty years a resi-
    dent of Tonawanda, died this
    morning in DeGraff Memorial
    Hospital after a short illness.
    Born in Germany, Mrs. Balling
    came to the United States
    when she was seven years old.
    She is the mother of four daugh
    ters and eight sons. Seven sons
    are associated with their brother
    Henry J. Balling, prominent
    contractor. She was the widow
    of the late Jacob Balling.
    Mrs. Balling was a member
    of St. Francis Church and the
    Altar and Rosary Societies of
    the church.
    Daughters surviving are Mrs.
    Spencer Carney, Mrs. Florence
    Karkow and Miss Gertrude Balling
    of the Tonawandas; Mrs.
    Frances Brown of Englewood,
    Fla. Her sons are M. Joseph,
    Henry J., Fred, Leo, Leonard,
    Walter, Norman and Jacob, all
    of the Tonawandas. Also surviving
    are 28 grandchildren and
    four great-grandchildren.
    A prayer service will be conducted
    in the residence Friday
    at 9 a.m. and the Rt. Rev. Msgr.
    John A. Weismantel will sing a
    solemn high Requiem Mass at
    9:30 in St, Francis Church. Burial
    will be in St. Francis Cemetery.

    NORTH TONAWANDA. Dec. 29
    - Stricken with a heart attack
    yesterday. Supervisor Anthony W.
    Brick. Sr.. 73., of 65 Christiana
    street, died at 8 o'clock this morning
    at the DeGraff Memorial hospital.
    For the last 14 years Mr. Brick
    had represented the first, ward of
    this city on the board of supervisors
    and was re-elected last November
    for two additional years.
    Born in Buffalo he became a
    resident here 50 years ago and was
    identified with the lumber business
    most of that time. His first
    position was secretary of the 811-
    verthorn Lumber company, a position
    he held until the firm went
    out of business 20 years ago. He
    then engaged in the wholesale
    lumber business on his own for 30
    years. (
    Mr. Brick was a leader in the
    Republican party here and besides
    acting as supervisor he served
    BS a member of the police commission
    here for many years and
    was also a member of the Republican
    City committee.
    He was a member of Ascension
    church and the Holy Name society.
    He was also a member of trie
    B.P.O. Elks, of which he was a past
    exalted ruler.
    Surviving are six sons. William,
    Cyril, Cornelius; Anthony, \V. Jr.,
    Oeorge and Robert, all of this
    city; three, daughters, Mrs. Josephine
    KeppeJ, of Kenmore, Mrs. Alma
    Balling and Mrs. Delores Gosch,
    of this city; 18 grandchildren; three
    brothers, Thomas Brick, of Niagara
    Falls, Nicholas and Joseph Brick,
    of Buffalo, and three sisters, Nellie
    Brick, of Buffalo. Leona Brick, of
    Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Veronica
    Tyrel, of Depew.
    The funeral will be held Wednesday
    morning at 8:30 o'clock from
    the residence with services at Ascension
    church at ft o'clock. The Rev.
    Francis J. Hunt will officiate. Interment
    will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery

    She was born in Buffalo and had
    resided in North Tonawanda for
    the past 35 years. Besides her
    husband she is survived by three
    daughters, Miss Dolores Brick,
    North Tonawanda, Mrs. Carl Heppel,
    Kenmore, and Mrs. Henry
    Balling, Tonawanda; six sons, William
    A., Cyril J., Cornelius F..
    Anthony W., Jr., George G., and
    Robert C, all of North Tonawanda;
    four grandchildren, one sister.
    Miss Josephine Beriinghoff. Buffalo,

    morning at 9 o'clock at the
    residence and half an hour later
