Eight Barker children were parentless
today as a result of an automobile
accident' in which their
father and mother, Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Bane, West Lake Shore
road, were killed early yesterday In
Route 18 approximately four miles
northwest of Lyndonville.
State police said that the accident
occurred about 1 a.m. when their
car struck a tree and house and then
burst into flames after overturning.
Seven other persons were Injured
during the weekend in area
automobile mishaps as local - and
state police described the period
as one of the worst in recent
weeks for traffic accidents.
State police at Gaines reported
that Mr. Bane, 41, and his wife,
Laura, 38, were returning to their
home from a shopping expedition
in Lyndonville when their car apparently
skidded and went out of
control.
Believe Kerosene Exploded
One of two five-gallon kerosene
containers in the car is believed to
become ignited and exploded.
Although the bodies of the couple
were charred almost beyond recognition,
Coroner David E. Fraser,
Lyndonville, expressed the opinion
that Mr. Bane and his wife died
before the car caught fire.
, A certificate of death ,is being
withheld pending the results of an
autopsy ordered by state police.
Surviving are the eight children,
John, 19, of Lockport; Clare, 15;
Howard, 13; Arnold, 12; Loretta,
seven; Robert, five; Herbert, three,
and Shirley Bane, two, all at home;
Mr. Bane's mother, Mrs. Clara Bane,
and his sister, Mrs. Myrtle Hill, both
of Rochester, and his four brothers.
Let Bane, Rochester, and Keith,
Robert and Earl Bane, all of Lyndonville.
Mrs. Bane also is survived by her
parents, Alonzo Tanner, Lockport,
