Rocco Basi, 59, formerly of
1216 Leeds St., the man who
helped make Utica's traffic
°'stop and go," died March 18
in. Clearwater Hospital, Clearwater.
Fla. He moved to 815
Embassy Park, Clearwater, two
months ago.
Mr. Basi was superintendent
of traffic signal maintenance for
Utica's police and fire departments,
retiring in 1968.
He joined the Utica police
force in 1939 and served in
prowl cars and "on the beat"
before joining~the late~~Capt.
Samuel Martucci in establishing
the Traffic Division. Together,
,they took over the installation
and maintenance of Utica's traffic
control equipment.
As the division grew, Mr.
Basi's responsibilities encompassed
the supervision of linesmen
and maintenance of miles
of overhead and underground
wires and cables.
His advice in solving traffic
problems was sought by community
leaders and Traffic Inspector
Paul Carl.
Interested in reducing accidents,
he changed traffic light
cycles ,when needed, thus facilitating
traffic flow.
A native Utican, Mr. Basi was
the son of the late Bartholomew
Basi and Angeline Pecorello
Basi.
He received his education in
Utica and Italy, and at one time
was employed by the Hotel Uti-
ca.
Mr. Basi was married to Doro-
thy Marie Abiusi in Utica.
He was a member of the Holy
Name Society of the Utica Po-
lice Department, and John E.
Creedon Benevolent Association
and St. Mary of Mt. Carmel
Church.
