    Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Batt of 36 Walter Ave.,
    Tonawanda, will celebrate their 50th wedding
    anniversary Saturday with a party in the
    Tonawanda home of their son, Richard. Mr. Batt
    and'his wife, Hazel, both are Buffalo area
    natives and were married in St. Francis of Assisi
    Church, Tonawanda, in 1927. Mr. Batt retired
    from Remington Rand Corp. after 43 years
    employment, but then began a new career in real
    estate and presently is employed by Realty 1.

    unexpectedly, Tuesday (Nov. 4,
    1969) at DeGraff Memorial
    Hospital.
    Born in North Tonawanda, he
    had been a resident of the
    Tonawandas all his life and had
    been employed at Van Raalte
    Silk Mill for more than 35 years
    retiring 20 years ago. He was a
    member of St. Francis of Assisi
    Church and its Holy Name
    society.
    Survivors include his wife,
    Augusta (nee Schmeichel) Batt;
    a son, Edward H. Batt, and a
    sister-in-law, Mrs. Leo (Marie)
    Batt, both of Tonawanda; five
    grandchildren and 10 great-
    grandchildren.

    Funeral Home, Morgan and

    A trolley ride to Buffalo to see the sights at the
    Pan American Exposition highlighted the honeymoon
    trip of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Batt Sr. of 402 Broad
    St., Tonawanda
    They will celebrate their 60th
    wedding anniversary Sunday.
    The Tonawanda bride and her
    North Tonawanda bridegroom
    were married Oct 3, 1901 in Ascension
    Church. Amid the well wishes
    of friends and relatives,
    they boarded the trolley for the
    trolley-trip.
    Mrs. Batt said today she doesn't
    remember too much about the ex-
    position except that it was won-
    derful and exciting. she says she
    is much more interested in her
    plans for Sunday. She has chosen
    a magenta wool dress to wear to
    church and to an afternoon Open
    House party. She will accent her
    attire with a silver and white cor-
    sage which will be presented to
    her by her husband.
    The couple will begin the day
    by attending a High Mass at 10:30
    a.m. in St. Francis Church where
    both have been active many
    years. Mrs. Batt presently serves
    as vice president of the Altar So-
    ciety and Mr. Batt is a member
    of the Holy Name Society.
    The afternoon party will be in
    the Anerald Boat Club in Niagara
    Street. Tonawanda.
    Mrs. Batt. the former Augusta
    Schmeichel, was reared in William
    Street, Tonawand, and Mr.
    Batt lived on Main Street in North
    Tonawanda. After their marriage
    they made their home in Tona-
    wanda. Mr. Batt worked on the
    docks and drove a laundry wagon
    in the early days of their mar-
    riage. Later he was employed at
    Van Raalte for more than 30
    years and retired in 1953. Mr.
    Batt is a member of the GAR.
    The couple had two children,
    Edward Jr., and the late Leo 0.
    Batt. They have five grandchildren:
    Richard Batt, Mrs, Joan
    Livingston Jr., Dean, Dennis and
    John Batt. They also have seven
    great-grandchildren.
    Their friends and relatives are
    invited to the Open House from 2
    to 5 p.m.

    North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/25/1913

    Xavier Batt, 81 years old, died sud
    denly at his home at No. 69 Main
    street late yesterday afternoon. Coroner
    George B. Helwig was called this
    morning to Investigate the cause of
    the man's death and pronounced it due
    to heart disease.
    Mr. Batt was connected with the
    North Tonawanda street department
    for many years and was working half
    an hour before he died. He was sit
    ting in a chair at his home, talking with, members of his family and other
    relatives, when he was stricken. Dr.
    C. W. Clendenan and Dr. R. H. Wilcox
    were called but the man was
    dead when they arrived.
    Mr. Batt came to this country from
    Germany when he was four years old
    and settled at Cheektowaga. They
    were passengers on the schooner Mary
    which was caught in a storm on the
    Atlantic and for many days threatened
    with destruction. The boat was
    113 days crossing the ocean. During
    the storm the passengers made a vow
    that they would erect a chapel in honor
    of the Mother of Our Lord. This
    chapel was erected at Cheektowaga
    and is known as "Our Lady Help of
    Christians." It was in the cemetery
    at the rear of the edifice that Mr.
    Batt's parents were buried. He will
    be buried in the same plot.
    Before coming to the Tonawandas 41
    years ago, Mr. Batt conducted a brew

    ery at Williamsville. Upon locating
    here he opened a flour mill and was
    later engaged in the manufacture of
    shingles. His mill was one of the finest
    of its kind to be operated in the
    Tonawandas.
    Had Mr. Batt lived,until July 4, 1914
    he and his wife would have observed
    their sixtieth wedding anniversary.
    Besides his wife, Mr. Batt Is survived
    by four daughters, Mrs. John Netter,
    Mrs. Helen Rathgeber, Mrs. Cather-
    ine Graff and Miss Rose Batt and five
    sons, William, Frank, Charles, Edward
    and Albert of Tonawanda and Casper
    of Cleveland- He leaves 35 grand-
    children and 5 great grandchildren.
    The, funeral will be held at the chapel
    at Cheektowaga Monday morning

    Mrs. Catherine Batt, 85 years old.
    widow of the late Xavier Batt, died
    Saturday at her late home at No. 60
    Main street, North Tonawanda. Her
    death followed an illness of two
    weeks. Mrs. Batt was born in the
    town of Cheektowaga and came to
    the Tonawandas to reside in 1868.
    With her family she located on Main
    street in North Tonawanda and continued
    her residence there during the
    rest of her life.
    Mrs. Batt is survived by four
    daughters, Mrs. John Netter, Mrs.
    Helen Rathgeber, Mrs. David Graff
    and Miss Rose Batt; five sons, William,
    Frank, Charles and Edward
    Batt, all of the Tonawandas, and Casper
    Batt of Cleveland. The funeral
    will be held tomorrow morning at 9
    o'clock at the chepel of Our Lady
    Help of Christians in Cheektowaga,
    founded by Mrs. Batt's father inlaw,
    Joseph Batt. Interment will be in
    the family lot adjoining the chapel

    William A. Schmeichel. 59 years old, a well-known resident of this city, died at he home of his son. Albert Schmeichel of the Creek road. Martinsville, this morning after a lingering illness. He was born in Berlin, Germany. He had llved here nearly a half century He leaves five daughters. Mrs. Edward Batt, Mrs. William Callopy, Mrs. Charles Koelsch of Buffalo, Elisabeth Schmeichel of Bradford. Pa..and five sons, Albert. William. Edward and Charles Schmeichel of Tonawanda and Benjamin Schmeichel, a private now at Pharr, Tex. The funeral will be on Wednesday.

    Mrs. Bertha A. Schmeichel
    Mrs. Bertha A. Schmeichel, 57 yeras old, wife of William Schmeichel of the Nash road, died yesterday afternoon at her home after a lingering illness. She was born in Germany and had lived here 32 years. Besides her husband, five daughters, Mrs. E. Batt, Mrs. W. Callopy, Mrs. Melville Helbron, the Misses Agnes and Elizabeth Schmeichel of North Tonawanda and five sons, Albert, William, Edward, Benjamin and Carl Schmeichel of North Tonawnada survive. The funeral will be held from the family home at 1:30 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon and a half hour later from the St. Matthew's church on Wheatfield street, Rev. Carl Frankenstein officiating. Burial will be made in St. Matthew's cemetery at Sawyers Creek.
