    Canandaigua, Oct. 19-Two men
    are dead and a third was seriously
    Injured in an automobile crash in
    the Canandaigua-Chapin highway
    about 12:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
    The dead are:
    Maurice Fitzgerald, 65, of Hopewell.
    George A. Benham, 79, of Canandaigua.
    Seriously injured in Memorial
    Hospital here is William J. Meredith,
    47, former newspaper publisher,
    of this city- He has a crushed
    chest and a bad cut on the forehead
    which required five stitches to
    close.
    The crash occurred at the Intersection
    of the Chapin highway with
    the Littleville road, about three and
    one-half miles east of this city.
    There were no eye-witnesses.
    Fitzgerald was a passenger in the
    Benham taxi. It Is believed that

    the taxi attempted to make a left
    hand turn into the driveway of
    Fitzgerald's home when t h e car was
    struck broadside by Meredith, proceeding
    west towards Canandaigua.
    Fog and rain are said to have obscured
    Meredith's view of the car
    swinging across the road.
    Both cars were carried west by
    the Impact into the front yard of
    the Fitzgerald home. Benham and
    Fitzgerald were thrown from their
    machine while Meredith was found
    by passing motorists in a dazed
    condition behind the wheel of his
    car. The right-hand aide of the
    Benham machine was practically
    demolished and the right front end
    of the other oar badly damaged.
    Fitzgerald receaved a fractured
    pelvis causing an Internal hemmorrage
    from which death resulted, according
    to Coroner Leon A. Stet-
    son, of this city. He succumbed to
    his injuries shortly after being
    brought to Memorial Hospital. Ben-
    ham died in the hospital here late
    yesterday. He received a fractured
    skull and pelvis.
    Surviving Fitzgerald is one sister.

    Miss Mary Fitzgerald, with whom
    he resided. His body was taken to
    undertaking rooms in Shortsvllle.
    Mrs. Meredith is a daughter of
    William S. Moore, Geneva attorney,
    and with her son, resides at
    the Moore residence there.
    Benham is survived by a son, A.
    Harold Benham, of Rochester, and
    a daughter, Mrs. S. Hall, of Canandaigua.
    Funeral services will be
    held tomorrow at 2 o'clock in Woodlawn
    Chapel. The dead man was a
    resident of Canandaigua for 40
    years during which time he operated,
    first, a livery business, and later
    a taxi business.
    Coroner Stetson will hold a double
    inquest. The accident was investigated
    by Deputy Sheriffs James L
    Locke and Victor Campbell with
    Special Deputy Arthur LeFevre.

    After a considerable period of ill
    health, Mrs. Ada Edgecomb Benham
    of Canandaigua died on Tuesday
    afternoon In the Gordon hospital at
    Rochester, where she had gone as a
    patient a little more than a week before.
    Mrs. Benham, the daughter of
    Henry Edgecomb, was born In
    Phelps on June 2,1862. Her early life
    was spent in this village, where she
    had been visiting more or less for the
    past year. She was married to
    George Benham, who survives her,
    wltb a son and daughter, Howard
    and Inez Benham. She also leaves
    two sisters, Mrs. Julia Severance
    and Miss Minnie Edgecomb.
    The funeral will be held this
    afternoon at St. John's Episcopal
    church, Phelpa, after the arrival of
    the body by the noon train, and Interment
    will be made In Rest Haven.
