    YOUNGSTOWN —
Norman P. Townsend, 77 of Youngstown, NY, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls on February 22, 1936, he was the son of the late Elwin and Gladys (Oakes) Townsend of Niagara Falls, NY, later of Youngstown, NY.
Norman attended Maple Avenue School, North Junior, Niagara Falls High School, graduating in 1953. He also attended Niagara University School of Business from 1953-1957 and received a Bachelor's Degree. Norman entered the United States Army in 1959, serving in a personnel company at Fort Dix, NJ and was honorably discharged as a SP-4 in 1961. In 1964, Norman moved to Youngstown, NY and became a member of St. Bernard’s Church where he regularly attended mass.
Following his military service he went to work in the family auto parts business in Niagara Falls, with his brother. In 1978, they moved their NAPA store to Porter Road in the Town of Niagara. In 1995, that business was sold and moved a short distance to Military Road by its new owners, where it remains today. Norman remained with the new company until his retirement in 2002. His droll sense of humor and many years of experience were great assets to the businesses he worked for and enjoyed by his co-workers and customers.
Norman enjoyed boating and fishing for many years often in the Niagara River, Lakes Ontario and Erie and numerous smaller lakes in Ontario, Canada. He spent part of many vacations with his life-long friend, George Mack at his family home on Lake Muskoka in Ontario, Canada. His devoted friend and companion on many fishing trips on Lake Erie and elsewhere was David Stevens of Lewiston, NY. His interest in hunting and fishing led to many pleasant days pursuing those sports. Norman also became interested in trap shooting, becoming quite skilled in this sport and later in small-arms target shooting. He was a member of the 3F Club in Lewiston for many years.
After his retirement in 2002, he became an ardent canoeist and enjoyed paddling the streams, lakes and rivers of New York, northern Pennsylvania and Ontario, most often with his brother Louis. He especially enjoyed camping and canoing in the Adirondacks Mountains and spent several summers with his brother paddling the canoe wilderness areas of that vast park until medical problems required him to lead a few remaining quieter years at his home on the border of Fort Niagara State Park. Walking often there often, in the park he loved.
He is survived by his brother, Louis (Sandra) Townsend of Niagara Falls, NY; his nephews, Paul (Dawn) Townsend of Niagara Falls, NY and David (Stephanie) Townsend of Corona, CA. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his nephew, Michael Townsend.
There is no prior visitation. A Memorial Mass in his memory will take place Saturday, August 10th at 10:00 AM at St. Bernard's Church, 218 Hinman Street, Youngstown, and NY 14174 with Monsignor Thomas Moran officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. Arrangements entrusted to ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC.
