    RANSOMVILLE - A. Jerald McCollum. 62, a lifelong
    resident of the -Town of Porter, died Wednesday
    (Nov. 1, 1967) in Ransomville General Hospital where
    he had been a patient tour weeks. He resided at 3569
    Ransomville Road.
    Mr. McCollum was a con-
    rtruction worker and a mem-
    ber of Ransomville Methodist
    Church. He was the son of the
    late A. D. and Minnie Austin
    McCollum. who resided .in
    Balmer Road.
    Surviving are his wife. Beat-
    rice, tax collector for the Town
    of Porter; a daughter. Mrs.
    A. (Twila) Move, Chicago; two
    sons. CPO J. G. McCollum and
    Richard D. McCollum. both of
    Ransomville; two brothers, Melville
    McCollum. Lockport: and
    Kenneth McCollum,, Gasport; a
    sister, Ms Roy Schul, San-
    born; a foster sister, Mrs Ken-
    neth Pidgeon,, Niagara Falls;
    and two grandchildren.
    The Rev. H. R. Goodrich,, of
    the Weston Avenue Free Metho-
    dist Church, Niagara Falls, will
    officate at services Saturday at
    2 p.m. at the Hardison Funeral
    Home here. Burial will be in
    North Ridge Cemetery.
    Friends may call from 7 to 9
    p.m.. today and from 2 to 5 and
    7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

    GASPORT - An organizer of
    the dairyman's League Co-operative
    here, A. Day McCollum,
    88, of the Slayton Settlement
    Road, died Tuesday (April 21.
    1964) at his home after a long
    Illness.
    The son of the late Abram and
    Almyra Sanborn McCollum, he
    was bom in the Town of Porter
    Sept. 11. 1875.
    He operated a farm on the
    Balmer Road in Youngstown
    where five generations of the
    McCollum family had farmed
    until the TNT plant came into
    Model City in 1942 to buy up
    the farm.
    He subsequently moved to the
    Slayton Settlement farm where
    he continued breeding purebred
    holsteins, a portion of his farming
    career that took up 45 years.
    Mr. McCollum married Minnie
    Austin Dec. 9, 1903. Besides
    activity in the Co-operative
    movement, he was a charter
    member of the Niagara
    County Farm Bureau, and a
    member of the Niagara County
    Extension Service.
    Surviving besides his widow
    are a daughter, Mrs. Roy H.
    Schul of Sanborn; three sons, A
    Jerald McCollum of Ransomville,
    Melville C. McCollum of
    Lockport and Kenneth D. McCollum
    in Gasport; a brother,
    I. Lee McCollum of Lockport;
    19 grandchildren and 10 great
    grandchildren.
    Friends may call at the
    Bream Funeral Home, M a in
    Street, Gasport, Wednesday
    and Thursday from 2 to 4 and
    7 to 9 p.m., where funeral services
    will be held on Friday, with
    the Rev. Hugh S. Tigner officiating.
    Burial will be in North
    Ridge Cemetery.

    until 23 yeirs ago, when she
    moved to the Gssport area.
    Survivors Include a daughter,
    Mrs, Thelma Schul, San-

    Lockport, and Kenneth D.
    McCollum, Gasport; a foster
    daughter, Viola Pidgeon, Ni-

    and 13 great-grandchildren.

    Recalling a heavy snow storm on their wedding day 50
    years ago, Mr. and Mrs. A. Day McCollum of the Slayton Settlement
    Road celebrated their 50th wedding annivenary
    day at their home.
    A. Day McCollum of the Balm-
    er Road, Youngstown. and Minnie
    M. Autin oi Dickersonville Road.
    Ransomville. were united in Mar*
    riage Dec. 9. 1903 at the M. E.
    parsonage at North Ridge. After
    a short wedding trip, the couple
    resided on the McCollum farm on
    the Balmer Road.
    They lived on thai farm, which
    was a part of the original Holland
    Land Grant and was in the family
    for five generations, until the
    government purchased It as part'
    of the tract of land acquired for
    a government project in 1942. At
    that time they purchased a farm
    on the Slayton settlement Road,
    where they now reside.
    PROGRESSIVE FARMER
    Besides being a progressive
    dairy farmer, Mr. McCollum was
    for many years a member of the
    Ransomville Grange, Ransomville
    Men's Club. director of the
    L. F., president of the Dairymen's
    League Local and member
    of the Farm Bureau.
    He was one of the first tanners
    to practice conservation of soil In
    his area, and has a modern farm
    fully equipped and stocked with
    100 head of registered holstein
    Fresian cattle. Which is a partnership
    with his youngest son, Kenneth
    Day McCollum. who owns a
    farm nearby.
    15 GRANDCHILDREN
    The couple have two other sons.
    A Jerald McCollum of Ransomville
    and Melville C. McCollum of
    the Upper Mountain Road, and a
    daughter,, Mrs. Roy M. Schul of
    Cambria Road,, Sanborn. They al-
    so have 15 grandchildren.
    A recetion for relatives and
    friends was held in the evening
    with refreshments served from a
    table covered with a lace cloth
    and centered by a hree-tiered an-
    niversary cake. Mrs.. Lester Rob-
    zein and Miss Edith Pearson
    poured.
    The couple received many gifts.
    The bigget thrill of the evening
    for Mr.. and Mrs. McCollum was
    a long distance call from their
    eldest grandson, J. Grant McCol-
    lum,, who i serving with the U.S.
    Navy and is stationed at Havana,
    Cuba.

  1. 4.  MCCOLLUM, Abram M was born on 29 Oct 1842 in Town of Porter, Niagara County, NY (son of MCCOLLUM, Abram Howe and ZITTLE, Susanna); and died.

    Notes:

    McCollum, Abram M., was born in Porter, October 29, 1842, a son of Abram Howe and Susanah (Zittle) McCollum. His father was born in Tuscarora Valley in 1820, son of Joseph McCollum, born in Pennsylvania in 1775, and in 1820 came to Porter, settling on a farm where he lived and died in 1853. The maternal grandfather, Conrad Zittle, was born in Germany in 1765, and came to the United States with his mother in 1774, who died in Pennsylvania. Mr. Zittle came to Porter about 1809 or 1810 and settled on the farm at Tourer's Corners by the Four-mile Creek; he sold to Peter Tower and settled at Zittle's Corners about 1816 or 1817, where he lived and died April 11, 1850. Abram M. McCollum was reared on a farm, and educated in the common schools. He is a farmer and owns 120 acres of land and works about 200 acres. In 1869 he married Almyra S. Sanborn, daughter of Israel Sanborn of Orleans county, aud niece of Hon. L. R. Sanborn of Sanborn, Niagara county. Mr. and Mrs. McCollum had seven children Anna W., May (who died at four years of age), Evangeline, Abram D., Israel L., Lulu and Grant. Mr. McCollum is a Republican in politics, and in 1863 enlisted in Co. F, 8th N. Y. Heavy Artillery, serving under Col. Peter A. Porter until the battle of Cold Harbor, Va., June 3, 1864, where he was disabled by a bullet striking the shoulder and lodging in the left side of his head, which caused him to lay on the field unconscious for ten or twelve hours; after coming to he had lost so much blood from the shattered arm, that he was unable to help himself, and as no flag of truce u-as accepted from either side, was left laying on the field for two days, and then taken to Fairfax Seminary, Va., from which he was honorably discharged October 10, 1864. He is a member of Melville C. McCollum Post of Ransomville, N. Y., and its present commander, said post being named in honor of a brother. Mr. McCollum's father was a lifelong Whig and Republican; he was a leader in his town and county and served for a time in the regular army. He enlisted in the volunteers, serving for a time in a light battery, when he received an honorable discharge from the governor of his State, telling him he could do more good recruiting. He spent hundreds of dollars for the benefit of the government during the Civil war for recruiting, and in the Christian and Sanitary Commission for the benefit of wounded soldiers and their families that were left at home. Any one coming for aid was never turned away. Patriotic to a fault was the father of Abram M. McCollnrn.
