Lockport NY Union Sun Journal - 1/12/1967

    One workman was killed and
    another injured about 2 p.m.
    Wednesday afternoon in a flash
fire at the Birds Eye Division
    Plant of General Foods Corp.,
in the Village of Medina, Orleans
    County.
    Melvin F. Schilling, 57, of 500
    S. Academy St., Medina, died of
    massive burns, Dr. James Sterling,
    Orleans County Coroner,
    said.
Harry Daniels, 57, of 251 Caroline
    St., Village of Albion, who
    suffered smoke inhalation and
    shock, was listed in satisfactory
    condition today in Medina Me-
    mortal Hospital.
    Medina Fire Chief Ralph
Whiting said the cause of the
    fire had not been determined.
He said he planned to obtain a
    statement from Mr. Daniels today.
    Mr. Daniels was under heavy
    sedation Wednesday night at the
hospital and unable to be questioned.
    Chief Whiting said the two
men were working in a small
    frame building on Olney Street
housing a hot - water and water
    storage tank.
    He said the equipment supplied
    water for a nearby dormitory
    used by migrant workers
    during seasonal work periods at
the Birds Eye Plant. He said
no workers were in the dormitory
    at the time.
    Chief Whiting said Mr. Schilling
    and Mr. Daniels, both main
tenance men. were in the processs
    of shutting off the equipment
    and winterizing it. He added
    that both men performed the
    same operation last year.
He said that the structure is a
10 In in foot building and that
    Mr. Daniels made several unsuccessful
    attempts to rescue
    Mr. Schilling but was driven
back by the flames which separated
    the two men.
    The fire charred the interior
of the structure which is about
200 feet from the main processing
    plant, Chief Whiting said.
    There were indications an explosion
    preceded the blaze, but
Chief Whiting said today he did
not think there was an explosion.
    Mr. Schilling had worked for
