November 22, 2013 Fred Pepperday, Jr. Anonymous The Tonawanda News The Tonawanda News Fri Nov 22, 2013, 05:04 PM EST CLARENCE — Fred Pepperday, Jr., of Clarence, NY, previously of North Tonawanda, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at the age of 82. He was surrounded by his loving family when the angels took him to his new home in heaven. Fred, or "Pepper" as he was known by his closest friends, was born in Buffalo and lived on the east side in the 1940s. He lived directly across from Offerman Stadium, where he became a bat boy for the Buffalo Bisons in his early teens. His experience with the Bisons cultivated a love for baseball which continued throughout his life. At 16 years old, Fred began his career in the apparel industry for M. Wile and Co. in Buffalo. He held many positions, starting as a sweeper then working his way up to becoming Vice President of manufacturing and planning. While assigned in Baltimore, Fred discovered an affinity for thoroughbred race horses. He lived down the road from the Pimlico Race Track and decided to get into the horse racing circle. He purchased his own horses and actually experienced the joy of the winners circle with Colony of War and Powder, who came in first and second in the same race. Mr. Pepperday was an Army veteran in the Korean War. He was a former Chairman of the United Way of Buffalo. He also owned and operated a restaurant on the Erie Canal called Pepper's Pier which was frequented by many boaters. While still employed at M. Wile & Co., Fred also owned a men's clothing store during the '70s and '80s called CFO, which was located in Amherst. When he retired from M. Wile, Fred opened "Pepperday's Men's Clothiers" on Webster St in North Tonawanda. For more than 17 years the store was a draw and gathering place for people throughout the Western NY business community. The store was also frequented by local residents who needed a fine suit at a great price for a special occasion. In later retirement, Fred or "Pop Pop" as he was known to his grandchildren, enjoyed the simple pleasures of being with his family. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Joan (Zimmer); his children, Denise (John) Zielski, Karen (Dennis) Grapes, Kim Pusch, Fredrick "Rick" (Judy) Pepperday, Nanette (Bruce) Derry and Jennifer (Timothy) Braun; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sister, Dolores (Edward) Coval and brother, Ronald Pepperday. The family will be present on Sunday from 2-6 PM at the (Harris Hill Chapel) AMIGONE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8440 Main St. (near Harris Hill Rd.) Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Monday in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Clarence, at 10:00 AM. Interment to be held privately by the family. Flowers gratefully declined. If so desired, memorials may be made in Fred's name to Hospice Buffalo, Inc., 225 Como Park Blvd., Cheektowaga.
