    TONAWANDA - Douglas L. Oliver, age 57, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, June 8, 2014, after a brief illness. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late William and Helen (nee Nowak) Oliver and had been a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. A member of St. John Lutheran Church in North Tonawanda, he was employed at Washington Mills in Niagara Falls before retiring due to illness.

    He is survived by his daughter, Madison Oliver; three brothers, James (Cheryl) Oliver, William (Lynn) Oliver and Robert (Anna) Oliver; two sisters, Jean Marie (Lance) Fadden and Charla L. Bodie; and three step-children, Jessica (Cory) Theal, Michael Hartman and Josh Hartman. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    Friends may call today (Wednesday), from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the HAMP FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 37 Adam Street at Seymour, Tonawanda. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Thursday at St. John Lutheran Church, 6950 Ward Road at Niagara Falls Blvd., Wheatfield. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to Hospice Buffalo are preferred by the family.

    Our Lady of the Rosary Church
    was the setting for the marriage
    Saturday (June 18, 1955) of Miss
    Helen Barbara Nowak, daughter
    of Mr. Henry Nowak, "A" St.,
    and William Oliver, son of Mr.
    and Mrs. Lloyd Olivet, North
    Tonawanda. The Very Rev.
    Msgr. J. Stanly Ormsby officiated
    at the ceremony.
    When given In marriage by her
    brother, Henry Nowak Jr., the
    bride wore a floor-length gown
    of nylon tulle with Chantilly
    lace redingote. Her veil of French
    silk illusion was caught to a
    queen's crown studded with
    seed pearls and sequins. She carried
    a prayer book with a white
    orchid and lily of the valley
    streamers.
    Miss Pauline Nowak was her
    sister's maid of honor. She was
    gowned in a powder blue floorlength
    gown with small pink
    buds covering the bodice. She
    wore a matching picture hat and
    carried blue pom pons.
    An dientical yellow gown was
    worn by Miss Janet Sullivan,
    bridesmaid.
    George Oliver was his brother's
    best man and guests were
    seated by Andrew Nowak.
    The reception was held at the
    Lincoln Hotel from 3 p.m. to
    8 p.m. A buffet luncheon was
    served.
    Mrs. William Aquino, a friend
    of the bride, received the guests
    in an aqua silk dress. The mother
    of the bridegroom favored a
    white silk flowered, dress. Each
    wore a corsage of yellow roses.
    After a wedding trip to Washington,
    D. C. and Virginia, the
    couple will reside at 2429 Independence
    Ave. The bride departed
    wearing a white dress
    with powder blue jacket and
    white accessories. A white orchid
    completed her ensemble.

    Mrs. Mary Nowak, 46, of 61 A
    street, mother of Radarman Martin
    Joseph Nowak, U. S. Navy, who was
    killed early in the Korean war on
    the aircraft carrier, Pledge, died suddenly
    late yesterday at Mt. St. Mary's
    hospital.
    Requiem High Mass for Mrs.
    Nowak will be celebrated at 9 a.m.
    on Wednesday at Our Lady of the
    Rosary church after 8:30 a.m. services
    at the Zajac Funeral home.
    Mrs. Nowak was born at Bituman,
    Pa., and moved here during her infancy.
    She attended Sugar Street
    school and Our Lady of Rosary
    parochial school.
    Mrs. Nowak was the mother of 12
    other children, Two of her-sons,
    Stanley Nowak, AK2, Lakehurst, N.
    J., and Philip Nowak, AOAN, San
    Francisco, Calif., are serving in the
    United States Navy.
    Abo surviving are her husband,
    Henry Nowak; six other sons, Henry,
    Thomas, Andrew, Stephen, Leonard
    and Francis Nowak, all pf this city;
    four daughters, the Misses Helen,
    Pauline and Margaret Nowak and
    Mrs. Mary Jane Roy, all of this
    city;, her mother, Mrs. Mary Monko,
    this city; six sisters, Mrs. Margaret
    Polewicz, Mrs. Josephine Guzdek,
    Mrs. Sophie Beczkowski, Mrs. Helen
    Schram and Mrs. Susan Kapelka,
    all of this city, and Mrs. Anna
    Tomaka, Lackawanna; two brothers,
    Michael and John Monko, this city;
    one grandchild and 19 nieces and
    nephews.
    Burial will be in Gat of Heaven
    cemetery.
