    LOCKPORT - Louis Joseph Caterina of Niagara Falls, passed from this earthly life on Saturday, July 26, 2014 in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, NY. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on October 22, 1925, the youngest of eight children born to Salvatore and Elizabeth (Giordano) Caterina. He attended local schools and graduated from Niagara Falls High School.

    Mr. Caterina entered the United States Navy in Jan. 1944 and served as a Machinist's Mate aboard the destroyer USS English. During his service he received the American Theater Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 4 stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 star, the Victory Medal, and was honorably discharged in May of 1946. On August 17, 1946, he married his childhood sweetheart, the former Pauline Newton, and they remained happily married for 60 years until her passing in 2006.

    Mr. Caterina was employed with the former Niagara Alkali Company for several years and in 1954 began his career as a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, until his retirement in 1987.

    Survivors include his children, Patricia (Richard) Reagan of Calabash, NC and Mark (Kim) Caterina of Niagara Falls; four grandchildren, Shannon, Richard II, Stacie and Tyler, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.

    Friends may call Monday 4-8 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, where services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, with the Rev. Stewart M. Lindsay, OSFS, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Niagara Falls Memorial Park Cemetery, Town of Lewiston. Flowers gratefully declined. If desired, contributions may be made in his honor to Niagara Hospice Inc., (Roof Repair), 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094; or Northern Chautauqua Canine Rescue, 7540 North Gale Street, Westfield, NY 14787.
