LaVerne "Hub" E. Strassburg

NORTH TONAWANDA — LaVerne "Hub" E. Strassburg, a longtime resident of North Tonawanda, died on Thursday, June 14, 2012 in Northgate Manor. He was 91.

He was born in North Tonawanda, NY on July 3, 1920, the son of Jesse and Ella M. (Werth) Strassburg. Attending North Tonawanda schools, he was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School. He worked for Stoeckel Builders for a short time before serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant with the 395th Bomb Group in November of 1945.

Hub worked for many years with the North Tonawanda Department of Public Works, retiring from the engineering department. He was a longtime member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving on its cemetery board and a member of Gratwick Hose Fire Company for over 50 years. An avid sports lover, he was a NY Yankees' fan and helped coach little league baseball.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille (Kupp) Strassburg; four children, Jan (Paul) Kolbe of North Tonawanda, James (Melanie) Strassburg of Cleveland, TN, Lynne (Terry) Tavano of Bryan, TX, and Susan (Leon) Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda; a brother, Robert (Margaret) Strassburg of North Tonawanda; nine grandchildren, Mark (Rachelle) Kolbe, Jennifer (Jamie) Elmer, Jaime (Michael) Davidson, Erin Strassburg, Thomas Zalewski and Rebecca Zalewski, Ann (Owen) DiVico, Sara Szczerbinski and John Szczerbinski; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call Monday from 4-8 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls. Funeral services Tuesday 10:30 AM in St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1135 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda. The interment will be private in St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery. Flowers graciously declined. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the church in his memory.

STRASSBURG - Jesse F. Strassburg, 82, of North Tonawanda, NY., Friday (May 16, 1975) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness Mr. Strassburg was a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda, a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Layman's League and was an emplove of the North Tonawanda Board of
Education, retiring 20 years ago. Surviving are three sons, Norman K. (Kathleen) Strassburg of Essex Junction, Vt., LaVerne (Lucille) Strassburg and Robert (Margaret) Strassburg, both of North Tonawanda; ten grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren: two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Rosebrock and Mrs. Naomi Starck, both of North Tonawanda. The family will receive friends at the Fretthold Funeral Home, Inc., 1241 Oliver St,., at Ward Rd., North Tonawanda Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p m. Services will be held in St. Mark Lutheran Church Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Interment in St Mark Lutheran Cemetery. If so desired;, memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church.

A life long resident of this
city, she was a member of St.
Mark's Lutheran Church, the
Ladies Guild, Altar Guild, and
the Valpariso Guild of the
church.
She is survived by her
husband Jessie F. Strassburg;

will be held tomorrow afternoon for
Gustave F. Werth, Sr., 79, who died
Tuesday at his home, 103 Llnwood
avenue. Services will be held at the
residence at 2 o'clock and at the St.
Mark's Evangelical Lutheran
church. In Washington street, at 2:30
o'clock. The Rev. Paul Fretthold
will conduct the services and Interment
will be in Elmlawn.
Mr. Werth was born In Germany.
For the last 53 years he had resided
in North Tonawanda. He was a
member of the St. Mark's church for
many years.
He is survived by his wife, Wilhelmlna;
three sons, J. Theodore,
superintendent of public works in
North Tonawanda, Edward A. and
Gustav F. Jr.; two daughters, Mrs.
William Stoeckel and Mrs. Jesse
Strassberg, and nine grandchildren,
all of North Tonawanda
