Death yesterday claimed one of
this area's oldest and most widely
known figures when Mrs. Ann Sophia
Brooks, 89, died at her home,
602 Eighty-seventh street, after being
in poor health for the last eight
months.
Familiarly known as "Mother" to
hundreds of residents In the LaSalle
section where she had lived almost
all her life, Mrs. Brooks was bom in
a log cabin which had been built by
her father at Hall's station, now
Beach ridge. When she was five
years old her ramlly moved to La
Salle.
Mrs. Brooks was the wife of the
late Frederick Brooks, contractor
and president of the former village
of LaSalle. Her husband supervised
the construction of many LaSalle
buildings Including Zlon Evangelical
Lutheran church and the village
hall. During his term as village president,
the IRC obtained its right of
way through LaSalle and later Mr.
Brooks was instrumental in obtaining
the reduction to five cents of the
fare from the village to this city.
Mrs. Brooks was the oldest parishloner
of the First Methodist church
and until recent years had always
taken an active part in church activities.
She is survived by her
daughter, Mrs. John W. Tussing, this
city.
Friends may visit the Brooks home
until 2 p. m. tomorrow. The Rev.
Wesley J. Baker will conduct funeral
services which will be held at the
convenience of the family. Interment
will be in Rlverdale cemetery.
