    Ledyard - James Robert Haskell, 99, of Gales Ferry, passed away Nov. 27, 2023, after a brief illness.

    He was born in Washington, D.C. in 1924, the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Roy T. Haskell. James graduated from Lockport High School in New York in 1942, and the New York State Merchant Marine Academy in 1944, where he received a commission in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and a Third Mate's license in the Merchant Marine. He served on Merchant Marine ships during World War II and was present in Antwerp during the Battle of the Bulge.

    During the Korean War he was on active duty with the U.S. Navy, serving as a Lieutenant Commander with the 6th Fleet, on the minesweeper USS Sprig. Following retirement from the U.S. Navy he received a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Buffalo, and an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He was employed as an engineer at Electric Boat in Groton for 29 years, retiring in 1991.

    He is survived by his sons, Robert and Thomas of Gales Ferry, and several nieces and nephews.

    He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Eileen Haskell; his brother Roy of Feura Bush, N.Y.; and his sister Virginia (Hill) of Norwich.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 1, 2023, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gales Ferry. Interment will follow at Avery-Stoddard Cemetery in Ledyard.

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the charity of your choice.

    Eileen Ann (Bishop) Haskell, 91, of Gales Ferry , passed away on October 21, 2015 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Lockport, NY to the late William and Catherine Bishop.

    Eileen was a graduate of Lockport High School and St. Joseph Business Academy. She was employed by the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors until her marriage to James R. Haskell in 1950. He was an officer on active duty with the U.S. Navy and they were stationed at various locations until his release. She has resided in Gales Ferry for the last 52 years and was active in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church including the Guild and the Groton Auxiliary of the Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut.

    She is survived by her husband of 65 years, James R. Haskell; and her sons, Robert of Gales Ferry, Thomas who resides in Norwich; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert W. Bishop of Indianapolis, IN.

    Baskets of white chrysanthemums decorated the rectory
    of St. Mary's Church for the ceremony performed by the Rev.
    Albert G. Winter, pastor, on Saturday at 11 o'clock, uniting in
    marriage Miss Eileen Ann Bishop and Lt. (jg) James Haskell.
    The bride Is the daughter of
    Mr and Mrs. William J. Bishop
    of 186 Price St and Lt
    Is the son of Mrs Roy T
    of 11 Bewley Pkwy.
    The bride chose a ballerina-
    type dress of champagne colored
    nylon net over taffeta, fashioned
    with a sweetheart neckline. She
    wore a bonnet hat with a shoul-
    der-length veil of illusion and car-
    ried a Colonial bouquet of white
    carnations and rosebuds.
    ATTENDANT WEARS CORAL
    The maid of honor. Miss Vir-
    ginia Haskell, sister of the groom,
    wore a coral dress, also in bal-
    lerina style, of net and satin with
    a headpiece of illusion. she car-
    ried talisman rosebuds and white
    chrysanthemums in a Colonial
    bouquet. Robert W. Bishop was
    best man.
    The bride's mother wore a
    brown crepe dress, trimmed with
    matching velvet, and a corsag e
    of white camelias. Mrs. Haskell
    wore a royal blue tissue faille
    dress with a corsage of pink roses.
    Dinner was served to the im-
    mediate families at Green Acres,
    Burt, where the table was cen-
    tered with yellow and white
    chrysanthemums. Later a recep-
    tion was held to approximately
    500 guests in the Park Hotel,
    where yellow chrysanthemums
    were used in decorations.
    LEAVE FOR FLORIDA
    The Couple left to motor to Pan-
    ama City Fla., where they will
    make their home. For traveling,
    the bride wore a flame-colored
    crepe dress with a winter white
    hat and yellow rose corsage. She
    wore a beige coat in princess
    style, trimmed with beaver..
    The bride is a graduate of Lock-
    port High School and St. Jo-
    seph's Business School. The
    groom, a graduate of Lockport
    High School and New York State
    Maritime Academy, attended Uni-
    versity of Kentucky. He served
    as a maritime officer during
    World War II and now is on ac-
    tive duty with the U. S. Navy.

    4th, 1947, at the Lockport City Hospital.
    He la survived by four daughters

    Draan, of North Hollywood. Calif.,
    Mrs. Dorothy Martin, Mrs. Veronica
    Brandy, Ralph, William and Law
    rence Bishop of Lockport, and Bernard
    Bishop, of North Hollywood,
    Cal., two nephews, Otto and Frank
    Bishop, of Austria, also seventeen
    grandchildren. The funeral win be
    held at 8:30 o'clock on Monday
    morning at. Taylor & Reynolds
    Funeral Home and at 9:00 o'clock
    at St. Mary's Church. Interment
    will be to St. Mary's Cemetery.

    Ill for a week with pneumonia,
    Mrs. Barbara Bishop. 71. wife of
    John Bishop, died Tuesday night at
    her home. 57 Price St.
    Mrs. Bishop was born in the
    Town of Pendleton, daughter of Mr.
    and Mrs. Sebastian Bicker, but had
    lived In Lockport since her marriage.
    She was a member of the
    Rosary Society of St. Mary's
    these Church.
    Besides her husband, ahe leaves
    four daughters, Mrs. Albert Drean
    of North Hollywood, Cal., Mrs. Cal-
    vin Berner, Mrs. Ward Martin and
    Mrs. Thomas Grundy; and four
    sons, Ralph, William, Lawrence and
    Bernard Bishop all of Lockport;
    and 17 grandchildren.
    Services will be held Friday at
    8:30 at the Taylor and Reynolds
    Funeral Home, 70 Niagara St., and
    at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Church.
    Burial will be in St. Mary's Ceme-
    tery.

    Wedding bells rang July 24, 1894, fifty years ago, at the
    Good Shepherd Church in Pendleton for the marriage of Mr. 1
    and Mrs. John Bishop. 57 Price St., at a High Mass at 10
    o'clock.
    The couple celebrated their 50th
    anniversary by attending Mass at
    Good Shepherd church, Pendle-
    ton Sunday and then with a dinner
    at Maple Brook Manor with their
    8 children and 16 grandchildren.
    Mrs. Bishop, now 68, was born
    on the Transit Road, town of
    Pendleton, the daughter of the late
    Mary Anna Rerun and Sebastian
    Bicker,
    Mr. Bishop, now 77 was born in
    insbruck, Tyrol, Austria and came
    to this country at the age of 25.
    He is the son of Catherine Patrick
    and James Bishop. He was em-
    ployed at Old Pulp Mills, Holly
    Shops, Gardner Foundry and Si-
    monds Saw and Steel Plant until
    he retired about 10 years ago.
    Following the finner, a reception
    was held at the home of the
    couples son, Bernard Bishop of
    Price Street.
    Mr. and Mrs. Bishop have 4
    daughters, Mrs. Calvin Berner,
    Mrs. Albert Drean, Mrs. Theodore
    Sherlock and Mrs. Thomas Grundy
    and 4 sons, Ralph, William, Law-
    rence and Bernard.
