Bernard R. Garey, age 88 of Wheatfield, NY, was called to his heavenly home on December 26, 2023 at the Elderwood at Grand Island facility. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 27, 1935; son of the late Bernard and Genevieve (Lewandowski) Garey. Bernard earned his Master's Degree in education at Niagara University, and was employed in the Niagara Wheatfield School District for over 30 years, teaching history, english, and was a guidance counselor. He was a long time member of St. Vincent dePaul Parish- Prince of Peace site, and the Knights of Columbus. Bernard was an accomplished pianist, enjoyed sports, was an athlete in basketball, golf and tennis, and played tennis into his senior years. He was an avid reader, enjoyed listening to music, walking his dogs, and the quality time spent with his family. Bernard made a religious pilgrimage to Our Lady of Medjugorge, in the former Yugoslavia, several times.Preceded in death by his wife, Joyce M. Garey on May 10, 2000. They were married June 18, 1958; two sisters, Christine Stoinoff and Cythea Atkinson; and grandson, David G. Szlachta.Survivors include seven children, Deborah (Francis) Szlachta, Bernadette (James) Heuer, Joyce (late Albert) Wienke, Jennifer Garey, Janine Garey (Christopher Hufnagle), John (Diane ) Garey, and Stephanie (Anthony) Martino; grandchildren, Amanda (Jeffrey) Matusik, Jaime Pangrazio, Kyle Szlachta, Sarah Heuer, Kelly Heuer, Jessica Oswald, Julie Oswald, Shannon (Wesley) Giles, Alexander Garey, Hayden Garey, Samantha Martino, Alexis Martino,and Anthony J. Martino; great-grandchildren, Finnegan Matusik, Landon Pangrazio, Cody Pangrazio, and Chloe Szlachta; and several nieces and nephews.Friends may call at the DuBois Funeral Home, 2436 Niagara Road, (Bergholz) in Wheatfield, on Friday (December 29) from 5-8 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday (December 30) at 12:30 p.m. in St. Vincent dePaul Parish- Prince of Peace Site, 1055 N. Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Interment will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Town of Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Niagara County SPCA, or Oishei Children's Hospital.
