    F. A. Hoefert Dies; Retired Police Chief
    North Tonawanda - Frederick A. Hoefert, 76, of 298 Niagara Street, and commander of a Spanish American War Veterans unit here, died Tuesday night (Jan. 15, 1957) at Veterans Hospital, Buffalo. He was hospitalized for the last two months but had been in ill health for the last, five years. Mr. Hoefert ended a 43-year police career when he retired Dec. 31, 1945. He had served as chief for 20 years, a record for that post in this city.
    With Force Since 1902
    He was appointed to the Police Department on April 1, 1902, after completing an enlistment in the U. S. Army, in which he served with the 8th Infantry Regiment and saw service in Cuba in the war against Spain and later service in the Philippines. Mr. Hoefert worked as a patrolman until June 1, 1924, when he was appointed on reserve duty in police headquarters on the retirement of the late Chief John F.Ryan. He was promoted to chief in 1925. Mr. Hoefert held the commandership of Albert R. Smith Camp,United Spanish War Veterans, since his retirement until death. He was active in the Niagara County Veterans Council and Niagara River Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the International Police Chiefs Assn., Sweeney Hose Co., the North Tonawanda Firemen's Benevolent Assn., and of First Evangelical United Brethren Church and its brotherhood.

    Born in Germany, Mr. Hoefert came to this country at the age of 9 with his parents, the late Henry and Louise Hoefert. The family settled on Grand Island and in 1901 moved to this city. Mr. Hoefert and his wife, the former Minnie A. Rohde, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 15, 1955. Surviving, in addition to Mrs. Hoefert, are two sons, Herbert W. Hoefert, this city, and Wilbert G. Hoefert, North Java; three daughters, Mrs. Kurt H. Osberg, Philadelphia, Mrs. Walter A. Reinhard, Amherst, Ohio, and Mrs. Glenn T. Wardell, this city: eight grandchildren; and a brother, William G. Hoefert, Detroit. The Rev. Harlington M. Bahn,D.D., will conduct the funeral service at the Hilliard Funeral Home at a time to be determined. Burial will be in Whitehaven Cemetery, Grand Island.

    HOEFERT - Minnie (nee Rohde) Hoefert, 82, of 298 Niagara St., North Tonawanda, died Friday (May 8, 1964) at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was the widow of former Police Chief Frederick A. Hoefert. Surviving are two sons, Herbert W. of North Tonawanda and Wilbert C. of Gainesville, Fla.; three daughters, Mrs. Kurt (Adeline) Osberg of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Walter (Florence) Reinhard of Amherst, Ohio, and Mrs. Glenn (Alma) Wardell of North Tonawanda; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; one sister, Mrs. Max Yensan and four brothers, Herman, Henry, William and Charles Rohde. Mrs. Hoefert was a member of Evangelical United Brethren Church of Tonawanda and the Spanish American War Veterans ladies' auxiliary. Friends may call at the Hilliard Funeral Home Inc., 147 Delaware St., Tonawanda, where services will be Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. David Lubba will officiate. Interment in Trinity Cemetery, Grand Island. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Evangelical United Brethren Church. The family will be present from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
