A tragedy unparalleled in the history of Niagara Falls occurred yesterda y afternoon. Mrs. Edward Pendergast was burned t o a crisp In her home a t the corner of Ontario a n d 13th streets, with no water In th e city mains a t that end of the city to extinguish the flames and probably save th e woman's life. At 3:05 o'clock an alarm was sounded from box No. 314. i t was quickly answered by the department a t the north end of the city, and the chief, on his arrival found a deplorable condition of affairs. There was not a drop of water in the mains and none was obtained until the chief sent In a general alarm. The chemicals were used on the burning house, but they had little effect on the fierce conflagration. An accident occurred at the pumping station early In the afternoon and the water supply was cut off, leaving the hydrants along the streets useless. The house was gutted, everything was destroyed and the awful suggestion that the body was in the ruins crept through the crowd with sickening weight. Two men picked their way through the fallen tlmbers, and in the cellar, under the front part of the house, they found a charred heap, bearing no resemblance to a human form, but it was all that remained of the unfortunate woman , Coroner Slocman was immediately summoned and took charge of the remains. No particulars could be learned from the coroner last night as to their disposition, as he would make no Inquiries of the grief-stricken children until tomorrow.
