    Notes:

Thanks to Donald MacDavid, ( Lancaster Historical Society ) for the following information:
"The first mention of a cemetery in Bowmansville was in the deed of land sold by
Abraham Frick to Isaac Staley in 1840. It specified that a quarter acre of fenced land
used as a burial ground was not to be included in the sale. This is the section at the
east front of Transit Rural Cemetery, the part that contains the oldest graves and stones.

  1. 2.  STALEY, Christian was born in 1768 in PA (son of STALEY, Christian and Elizabeth); died on 22 Mar 1848 in Amherst, Erie County, NY; was buried in Skinnersville Cemetery, Town of Amherst, Erie County, NY.

    Notes:

Could be in CHANCEFORD AND LOWER CHANCEFORD TOWNSHIPS, York County.

Town in PA could be Elizabeth, Lancaster Co.; This is NOT the same Christian as mentioned in Wythe County, VA. The Fact that he was born in 1768 and would have taken an oath of allegance on July 27, 1778 - he would have been 12 years old. Meanwhile, he was supposed to have died in Old Mount Airy, VA in 1796. Therefore, could not have father children after 1800. Believe his grandfather was Ulrich but his father was another of the sons and not Martin. Perhaps it was Jacob or Peter. Or could Ulrich have had a son, Christian, who was the father of a son by the same name.

2/2005-Obtained book "Some Descendants of Ulrich Stehley" by Joan Keller from library on interlibrary loan for 3 weeks. Found that a Jacob Staley has built a church in 1784 - St Luke's Lutheran in Chanceford Township, York, PA where many of the baptisms and marriages took place.

In 1803 Christian Staley purchased several pieces of property on "Buffalo Road" near "18 Mile Creek". Buffalo Road is now Main Street and, I believe, that "18 Mile Creek" is now known as Ransom Creek in Clarence. Showed him as being from Lancaster, PA on the deeds. Property being Township 11 Range 8. Also, John C Staley purchased property at the same time at the same Township and Range. Are they brothers?

1810 Census shows C Stailey in Buffalo, Niagara County, NY - Series: M252 Roll: 29 Page: 127

1800 Census shows Christian Stailey, Jr. in Elizabeth, Lancaster County, PA - Series: M32 Roll: 39 Page:
***** there is a Son with wife and father with children shown on this census - why is there no child named Christian??? Because Christian, Jr. had established his own household. Therefore, his father is also Christian.

This reply from the man who has the above web site:
    Hi Char
I doubt that this is the same man. My info shows Christian Staley of N.C. having children there in 1804, 1814, 1816, and 1823. None of the chidren's names are the ones you mentioned.

    Hi

I'm not sure if I have written to you before or not. I have a Christian Staley who was born in 1768 and has some children in Pennsylvania and others in New York State. My current information shows that the first of his children, Isaac, was born in 1801 in Lancaster County, PA. It appears that he was married in Lancaster, PA. Other children were: Jonas, Margaret, John Seba, Samuel, Elizabeth and Suzanna.

The records in Erie County, NY show that he purchased property in 1803 in Erie County.

Could this be your Christian Staley born between 1767 and 1772 in North Carolina????

    Appreciate your assistance.

    Char Soos

NOTE: In Skinnersville Cemetery there are two stones with the same dates one with the name of Christian Staley and one with Christian Stailey. The Christian Stailey has his wife, Margaret, next to him. The other Christian Staley is with the stones from John and Barbara.

Location of Skinnersville Road Cemetery - North Forest west of Millersport - south on Audubon Parkway - left at first signal which is Frontier Road - stones on left side of street in the far left hand corner - next to Neuman Chapel now part of UB used to be "The Little White Church - 1873" This was a community cemetery and not afflliated with any particular church.

Mary Wolf of St Paul Eggertsville (716-835-0407) is checking their records for me - 8/20/2007. This is the Lutheran church closest to the cemetery.

  1. 4.  STALEY, Christian was born in 1730 in Canton Berne, Guggisberg, Switzerland (son of STALEY, Ulrich and Anna); died on 12 Jul 1797 in Lancaster County, PA.

    Notes:

This is his father because in the 1800 census Christian Staley 1768 is listed as a "Jun" junior. That would make his father also Christian.

In the same township - Elizabeth - shows a Christian 45 and over with a son 16 thru 25, wife 45 and over and 2 daughters ages 16 to 25 on the 1800 census.
