    FILLMORE, Mo. - Caryl E. Messick, 88, Fillmore, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, in Savannah, Mo.

    Caryl was born March 24, 1917, near Fillmore, where he was a lifelong area resident and graduate of Fillmore High School.

    He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign. He was stationed in China, Burma and India. An airplane maintenance technician, Caryl was awarded two Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.

    On Nov. 28, 1946, he married Maxine Martin, who preceded him in death Aug. 31, 2004.

    Caryl was a member of the V.F.W., Dick Munkres American Legion Post No. 287 and NRA. He was an avid coyote hunter and trapper.

    His parents, Roy and Lillian (Simmons) Messick; sister, Lois (Wayne) Dysart; and brother, Forrest "Sam" Messick, also preceded him in death.

    Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Dick Madrid; grandsons, Derrick (Kristina) Wardlow and Darryl Wardlow; three great-grandchildren, Cathryn, Will and Zachary; two brothers, Ira and Kenneth Messick; sister-in-law, Nadine Messick; numerous nieces, nephews and friends; goddaughter, Cindy (Phil) Morris, and their daughters, Candy White and Kelley McDonald.

    Service: 10 a.m. Friday, July 22, Breit-Hawkins & Gladden Funeral Home, Savannah. Interment: Fillmore Cemetery, with military honors under the auspices of Dick Munkres American Legion Post No. 287. Visitation: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Diabetes Association for research.
