    LOCKPORT - A Celebration of Life for Shirley "Chuck" Beach Palmiter, retired
    math and computer science teacher, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday in
    Lockport Canalside Banquet Facility, 210 Market St., Lockport.

    The Niagara Falls native died Sunday in his Pendleton home while under the
    care of Niagara Hospice after a long illness. He was 78.

    After graduating from LaSalle High School, he served in the Navy as a seaman
    1st class aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangrila.

    After the war, he received a bachelor of science degree from the College of
    Charleston in South Carolina and subsequently took many graduate school
    courses.

    Mr. Palmiter taught math and computer science at Starpoint High School from
    1958 to 1960 and at Lockport High School from 1960 until retiring in 1983.

    He then operated his own computer consulting business for six years.

    Mr. Palmiter and members of his family were involved in many area youth
    projects, including the Pendleton Little League Baseball and working with Boy
    Scout troops.

    Survivors include his wife, the former Shirley Pokelwaldt; a daughter,
    Margaret L. of Washington, D.C.; and a son, Gary E. of Wilmington, Del.

    ATLANTA, GA —
    Shirley Palmiter, formerly of Lockport, NY, died on Saturday, November 23, 2013 in Atlanta, GA, following a long illness.
    Shirley was well-known at the Lockport Schools Federal Credit Union where she worked for many years. She moved to Atlanta to be near her daughter and has been living with Peggy and her partner, Nancy Chandler, for the last two years.
    Shirley is survived by her son, Gary, of Wilmington Delaware; her daughter, Peggy; her sister, Audrey Smith of Ransomville, NY; her sister, Carol Burnsworth of Atlanta, GA; and her sister, Beverly Blaise of Chicago, IL. A celebration of the lives of Shirley and her husband Chuck will be planned for the spring on Goat Island, the location of their first date. Donations should be made to Niagara Hospice or Hospice Atlanta in her name.

    The bride is the daughter of Mr.
    and Mrs. Edward Pokelwaldt. 152

    is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

    Baskets of colored gladioli and
    tall lighted candleabra decorated
    the church for the ceremony.
    Miss Virginia Wendt. at the organ,
    provided the musical getting for the
    wedding party with Mr. Paul Mehls.

    The bride, entering the church on
    the arm of her father, wore a white
    marquisette gown fashioned on colonial
    lines with a high neckline,
    long sleeves and hooped skirt. Her
    veil fell from a crescent tiara of
    seed pearls Into a full length train.
    She carried a bouquet of white
    roses centered with an orchid.

    Mr. and Mrs. Palmiter. parents
    of the bridegroom, held -a dinner
    for the wedding group and for
    the immediate family at their home.
    Later in the evening a receptlon
    for 200 guests was held at the Stone
    Castle, restaurant. Ferry avenue.
    After the reception the couple
    left on a motor trip to New York
    City. The bride traveled In a red
    gabardine suit with white accessories
    and an orchid corsage.
    Upon their return Mr. and Mrs.
    Palmiter will reside at Charleston.
    S. C. where Mr. Palmiter is
    tending Charleston university.

    9/12/2004 LOCKPORT - Catherine C. Pokelwaldt, a homemaker and a defense worker during World War II, died Thursday in Briody Health Care Facility after a long illness. She was 97.
    Mrs. Pokelwaldt was born Catherine Breitenbach in Wheatfield and raised in a farmhouse on the Amherst side of Tonawanda Creek. She lived most of her adult life in Niagara Falls, moving to Lockport at age 90. She had lived in the nursing home for more than a year.
    During World War II, she worked as a riveter, assembling airplanes at Bell Aircraft Corp. in Wheatfield.
    For most of her life she was a homemaker, enjoying what she called her "fancy work": knitting and crocheting, especially doilies and tablecloths.
    Her family said she was a fine baker, specializing in a sour cream cookie recipe handed down from her grandmother. She also enjoyed playing cards.
    Her husband of 43 years, Edward, died in 1970.
    Survivors include four daughters, Shirley Palmiter of Pendleton, Audrey Smith of Ransomville, Carol Burnsworth of Lockport and Beverly Blaise of Prospect Heights, ILl.; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
    Services will be held at noon Monday in Grace Lutheran Church, 736 Cayuga Drive, Niagara Falls. Burial will be in Wheatfield Cemetery.

    H. W. Pokelwaldt Fatally Stricken
    TONAWANDA -Herman W. Pokelwaldt, 82, of 60 Cleveland Ave., died unexpectedly early today (Oct. 26, 1956) after suffering a heart attack at the Columbus-McKinnon Chain County, where he was employed. City firemen administered oxygen and took Mr. Pokelwaldt to DeGraff Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Born in Germany, Mr. Pokelwaldt formerly resided at Walmore before moving to this city 19 years ago. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, St. Johnsburg. Surviving are his wife, Adelaide Winke (sic) Pokelwaldt; three sons, Irving Pokelwaldt, Lockport, Edward Pokelwalt, (sic) Niagara Falls, and Norman Pokelwaldt, North Tonawanda; a daughter, Mrs. Clara Haseley, Bergholtz; two stepsons, Arthur Schmeichel, Buffalo, and Wilbert Schmeichel; this city; a stepdaughter. Mrs. Donald Black. this city; a brother, Ferdinand Pokelwaldt, Medina; and a sister, Mrs. Anna Heinaman (sic), Buffalo. The Rev. J. Walter Theimeck will conduct services at. 2 p.m. Monday at the Ramp Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery.

    PHILIP BREITENBACH
    Philip Breitenbach, 78, of 96 Robinson St., died Wednesday in DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Germany, Mr. Breitenbach came to the U.S. when he was 12 years old and has since been a resident of the North Tonawanda area. He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church of Wendelville. Surviving are five sons: Louis, Fred, Henry and Walter all of North Tonawnda, and John of the Town of Tonawanda, four daughters, Mrs. Benjamin Wendt of Sanborn, Mrs. Edward Pokelwaldt of Niagara Falls, and Mrs. Kenneth Bayer and Mrs. Earl Bayer of Wendelville; 14 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; two brothers, Louis of the Town of Amherst and Adam of North Tonawanda; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Toellner of the Town of Amherst.
