The Good Times, Not The Bad Recalled By Longtime Teacher
Today, 75-year-old Mrs Harvey Haseley of North Tonawanda appears to be no different from any other active senior citizen. Dressed in a stylish pantsuit, she discusses her hobbies She enjoys oil painting, playing the organ, gardening and participating in activities at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. There are a few things one wouldn't know about Mrs Haseley by just looking at her or by visiting her well-kept home at 352 Stanley St. The former Martha Brauer was valedictorian of her 1917 graduating class at Tonawanda High School She then attended Buffalo Normal School, now Grover Cleveland High School, and Buffalo State Teachers College. Two years after her high school graduation, Mrs. Haseley began teaching at Highland School in Tonawanda - then a two-room building which housed 100 students. The school had no cellar and the toilets were located between the two classrooms A pot-bellied stove burned wood and coal for heat. Mrs Haseley remembers wearing high-buttoned shoes and long dresses to keep warm Mrs Haseley, who began teaching at the age of 19, taught for 41 years. At Highland School, she taught second, third and fourth grades all at once She taught between 45 and 50 students at one time Mrs Haseley taught four years in the old Highland School and one year in the new school At the old school, Mrs Haseley taught music, art, language arts, spelling, math and reading She also led her students in recreational activities. At the new Highland School, Mrs Haseley taught sixth grade. In 1924, she was married to the late Harvey Haseley, a contractor Mrs Haseley began raising her family She has two daughters, Mrs Ruth Proefrock of North Tonawanda and Mrs Jean Johnson of Northview, New Jersey, and two granddaughters. From 1933 to 1943, Mrs Haseley taught in the one-room Niagara 2 School at Tuscarora and Lockport Roads. At the rural school, Mrs Haseley directed a two-hour Christmas program each year for seven years. From Niagara 2 School, Mrs Haseley became a permanent substitute at North Tonawandas Pinewoods School' a position which she held for three years. At Pinewoods, Mrs. Haseley taught music and spelling to fourth, fifth and sixth graders. When she was no longer needed as a substitute teacher, she was told by the North Tonawanda Board of Education that she no longer had a job in the system 'They told me there was no fault with my teaching, but that I'd have to go because married women could not teach in North Tonawanda, Mrs. Haseley recalls. Well Mrs. Haseley paved the way for married women."I told the board that I was supporting my Dad and that I had to have the job," Mrs Haseley said. "They rescinded their motion and married women could teach here." From 1946 to 1969, Mrs Haseley taught at Wurlitzer School. Though she retired in 1969, Mrs Haseley has not forgotten her students. She keeps in touch with many of them, "one in particular," she said. Gary Behrns, who is now in his 20s and teaching languages at Amherst High School, sends Mrs Haseley birthday cards and holiday cards every year He was a student of hers at Wurlitzer School. Since her retirement, Mrs. Haseley has been a member of several organizations including the Retired Teachers Association of New York State, the Buffalo State Alumni Association, Alpha Delta Kappa honorary educators' sorority, the Niagara Arts Guild and the Tonawanda Council on the Arts. Mrs. Haseley thinks there are more teaching materials available now than there were when she was teaching. "But I did have a nice set of maps when teaching at the rural school," she added. Along with the good, there have been some changes for the worse in education, Mrs Haseley observed. "Students used to be more respectful years ago," she said "Now there's too much permissiveness."
