NIAGARA FALLS - Cassie Morine Janik, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October, 4, 2011, at the Elderwood Health Care at Crestwood. Cassie was born on May 3, 1922 in Mablevale, Arkansas to Robert and Nora (Adams) Hobby. As a child, she loved to spend time in the woods behind her parents' farm with her brother and sisters. She graduated from Bryant High School in 1942 after garnering local fame as a talented basketball player. Shortly after graduating, Cassie moved from her family farm into the city of Little Rock to work at a munitions plant, testing ammunition for use in World War II. It was during this time that she met Stephen Janik, a young sergeant in the Army. Within four weeks, in 1944, they were married. After the wedding, they moved to Mississippi for a short time, eventually settling down in Niagara Falls in the home that Stephen and his brothers built. Throughout her life, Cassie was known for her kindness and straightforward manner. The joy she found in life and her love of everyone around her manifested itself in a passionate talent for storytelling. She passed down family legends dating all the way back to the eighteenth century, and loved to regale family and friends with entertaining stories from her own life. She loved her pets, gardening, and made the world's most delicious lasagna. Cassie enjoyed working as a hostess for many years at her son's restaurant, Janik's Steakhouse, where she became a popular and recognizable face at the door. She was the wife of the late Stephen Janik, who died in November of 1986. Today, Cassie is survived and remembered by her sons, Stephen (Becky) Janik of Anchorage, AK and Walter (Bonnie) Janik of the Town of Wheatfield; three grandchildren, Jamey, Nicole, and Stephen Janik; one great-granddaughter, Sienna; one sister, Rachel (late Matthew) Gozdowiak of Sanborn, NY; also many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Cassie; sister of the late Bernie Hobby, Maxine Summerville and Gladys Terranova. The family will be present on Friday from 6-9 PM at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, SANBORN, NY. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:00 AM, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 453 Old Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda, NY, with the Rev. Karl W. Haeussler officiating. Memorials may be made in her name to the Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, DC 20090-6231. Interment in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
