Helen L. Hassan, 81, a homemaker who worked in her family's grocery store for many years, died Thursday (March 13, 2003) in her Grand Island home after a long illness.
Born Helen Grobengieser in Niagara Falls, she worked in the family grocery store for many years after graduating from Niagara Falls High School in 1940 with top honors. Grobengieser & Sons, the family store, was located on 18th Street and South Avenue in Niagara Falls for 65 years.
A homemaker for most of her life, she was a lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, gardening and trips to the family cabin in Canisteo.
Her husband, Daniel, died in 1979.
She is survived by three sons, Robert of Crossville, TN., James of Wolcott and Mark of Grand Island; a brother, Edward Grobengieser of Niagara Falls; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held today in St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Niagara Falls.

Henry Voelker, 70 years old, a lifelong resident of Bergholz, died yesterday at his home on the Niagara road. He had been in ill health for the past eleven years but it was not until Tuesday, when he was stricken with paralysis, that his condition became serious. For the past 30 years Mr. Voelker had been proprietor of a general store at Bergholz. Surviving are a wife, Augusta; three sons, John Voelker of Buffalo, Charles Voelker of Niagara Falls and Henry Voelker, Jr., of Bergholz; seven daughters, the Misses Louise and Esther Voelker of Los Angeles, Mrs. Lebrecht Schultz and Mrs. Albert Grobengieser of Niagara Falls and Mrs. George Heuer, Mrs. Valerius Ferchen and Mrs. Remhard Wienke of Bergholz, and 20 grandchildren. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence and half an hour later, standard time, from the St. Jacob's church. Rev. Otto Bruss officiating. Interment will be in the St. Jacob's cemetery.

Funeral of Henry Voelker Is Held
Was Born in Bergholtz; Had Lived There 70 Years.
BERGHOLTZ, July 28.-Henry Voelker, Sr., of Niagara street, who died at his home, removes one of the best known residents of Niagara county. Born in this village 70 years ago, he lived here all his life. For the past 30 years he had been proprietor of a general store on Niagara. street. Last week Tuesday he was stricken with paralysis from which he died Thursday morning. The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the family home, and the St. Jacob's church, the Rev. Otto Bruss officiating. Burial was in St. Jacob's cemetery. The floral tributes were many And beautiful.
