    Buffalo News, The (NY) - October 31, 2002. Samuel Burkhardt, 66, who was superintendent of highways, parks and streets for the City of Lockport from 1985 to 1999, died Monday (Oct. 28, 2002) in St. James Mercy Health Hospital, Hornell, after apparently suffering a heart attack. He had been preparing to go hunting with relatives at his cabin in Scio.
    Burkhardt was born in Rapids and attended local schools. He started his career with the city as a recreation leader on a seasonal basis in 1953. After high school, in 1956, he worked full time with the city, first as a sanitation worker, then as a heavy-equipment operator. From 1971 to 1985, he was a foreman. He then became superintendent of highways, parks and streets.
    Burkhardt held a great passion for sports. He was honored by the Western New York Basketball Officials Association board for his service from 1963 to 1988. He was inducted into the Niagara Falls Umpires Association Hall of Fame in 1990.
    Burkhardt was a golfer and a member of Lockport Town and Country Club. He was also a member of QUAD, one of the oldest ongoing international golf tournaments.
    He shot a hole-in-one May 16 at Niagara Orleans Country Club, Royalton.
    Survivors include his wife, the former Lois Haseley; two daughters, Denise King of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Darcy Renna of Wheatfield; a son, John of the Town of Tonawanda; two stepsons, Kent Walck of Benezette, Pa., and Dale Walck of Wheatfield; three stepdaughters, Janet Smith of Rockwall, TX, Marsha Johnston of Apex, NC, and Marlene Horvath of Garland, TX; and 19 grandchildren.
    A memorial service will be held at 7 P.M. Friday in Lockport Alliance Church, 555 Davison Road. Burial in Cold Spring Cemetery will be private
