    Lionel L. " Les " Read, 88, of Sanborn, NY, died peacefully Friday, July 24, 2009, at home with his loving family while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Les was born in Sanborn, NY, on April 19, 1921, the son of Viola (Sanborn) and Lionel J. Read, where he attended local schools. e served in the United States Army Air Force, during World War II, serving in Central Burma, India Burma, and was awarded the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. Les had owned and operated several business's in Sanborn including a Gas Station, Trenching business and Pyrofax Gas propane business. He was also a operating engineer for over 30 years, and worked through the IUOE # 463. He was very active in the Sanborn Community he cared so much about including, a member of the Sanborn Fire Co. for over 60 years, Sanborn American Legion, for over 50 years, a Charter Member of the Sanborn Lion's Club, one of the founding members of the Sanborn Area Historical Society, where he had served as a board member. He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church. He enjoyed many years of retirement traveling, enjoying family, and being involved in the historical events including display of his antique equipment. He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, the former Elena B. Strasburg, who died May 24, 2003; and a brother, William Clinton Read who died at the age of 17. Surviving are two sons, William (Ruth) Read, and Ronald L. Read, both of Sanborn, NY; two granddaughters, Andrea (Read) Hughes, of Sanborn and Kimberly (Read) Bolos, of Dallas, TX; three great-grandchildren, Jared Hughes, Michael Hughes, and Elena Bolos; a sister, Clara Mae (Pete) Martin of Newfane, NY; and several nieces and nephews. The family will be present Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM, at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, SANBORN, 5893 Hoover Road, where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM, with the Rev. Victor Meteiver, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Mount View Cemetery Town of Cambria, NY. Should friends desire memorials in Les's memory memorials may be made to the Sanborn Area Historical Society, PO Box 172, Sanborn, NY 14132-0172 or Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.     Elena E. Read, of Sanborn, NY, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at her home surrounded by her family while under care of the Niagara Hospice. She was a lifelong resident, being born at the family home of her parents John and Augusta [ Stoelting ] Strasburg, on July 11, 1921. She was a graduate of the LaSalle High School, in Niagara Falls, NY, and had been employed at the former Salesbook; DuPont and Hooker Chemical Companies; K-Mart and Allen's Men's Shop. She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church; the former Sanborn United Methodist Church Women's Guild; she was a life member of the American Legion Post 969, Ladies Auxiliary, where was a past president. She was also a member of the Sanborn Area Historical Society and the Sanbornite Senior Citizens. Surviving is her husband of 59 years, Lionel L. "Les" Read; two sons, William L. [ Ruth ] Read; Ronald L. Read, all of Sanborn; a brother, Robert Strasburg, of Niagara Falls; three sisters, Olga Wermuth, of Youngstown; Hilda Hermanson, of Sanborn; Alma Herbst, of Lockport, NY; two granddaughters, Kimberly Bolos; Andrea Hughes; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ida E. Schworm and Burnett Strasburg. The family will be present at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 5893 Hoover Road, Sanborn, from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM, Tuesday, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM, with the Rev. Kit Snyder, officiating. Burial will be in the Mount View Cemetery, Pekin, NY A memorial service will held Tuesday at 7:30 PM, by the American Legion Post, 969, Ladies Auxiliary.     militarv wedding was solemnized at
    3 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Oct.
    23. 1943. at the Sanborn Methodist
    church when Miss Elena Strasburg
    daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
    Strasburg, of Ward road, became
    the bride of Sgt. Lionel Leslie Read,
    son of Mr. and Mrs. Lionel J. Read,
    Saunders. Settlement road. The
    Rev P. L. Harburn, of Sanborn,
    N Y. and the Rev. Edward T. Read,
    of Whitesville N Y-, uncle of the
    bridegroom, officiated at the im-
    presslve double ring ceremony.
    The altar of the church was
    simply decorated with baskets of
    bronze pom poms and lighted topers.
    Miss Laura Ferchen, of Niagara
    Falls. N. Y.. was guest soloist
    accompanied-by Miss Eva Balcom.
    of Sanborn. Miss Ferchen sang.
    "Because." before the ceremony.
    The bride was gowned in traditional
    white bridal satin, styled on
    long torso lines with a full marquisette
    skirt and dainty niching
    around the bodice and pulled
    sleeves. Her lovely veil of Illusion,
    which fell from a tiara of orange
    blossoms, was her mothers wedding
    veil. The bride's bouquet was of
    white roses and pom poms-
    The maid of honor, Miss Elma
    Strasburg, sister of the bride, was
    attired in ice-blue satin and marquisette
    exactly like the bridal gown.
    Her headdress was made of black
    velvet ribbon and blue flowers, she
    carried bronze pom poms. The
    junior bridesmaid. Miss Clara Mae
    Read, sister of the bridegroom, was
    daintily attired In a floor length
    gown of pale pink taffeta. She
    wore white bows and pink flowers
    In her hair and carried a sheath of
    pink daisy pom poms.
    The bridegroom was attended by
    his cousin, Cpl. Clinton S. Hermanson,
    aa best man, and the ushers
    wers Claire Hermanson and
    Burnet Strasburg; both of Sanborn.
    The mother of the bride was
    gowned In blue crepe and the
    mother of the bridegroom In a
    beautiful plum shade. Each wore a
    corsage of white dom poms. After
    the ceremony a reception was held
    at the church for the relatives.
    The dainty tea table was centered
    with a tiered wedding cake. Mrs.
    Clinton 8. Hermanson and Mrs. Jacob
    Amacher presided at the urns.
    Later a wedding dinner was served
    for the Immediate families and
    wedding party at the home of the
    bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
    Strasburg, in Ward road. After a
    short weekend wedding trip Sgt.
    and Mrs. L. Leslie Read are leaving
    for Chanute Field, Illinois,
    where they will reside.

    Dies in Sanborn
    SANBORN, June 14 — John A. Strasburg, prominent Ward road farmer died at his home yesterday after a short Illness.

    Born In the Town of Wheatfleld July 31. 1877, the son of the late August and Auguste Strasburg. He has resided In the vicinity of Sanborn for 53 years.

    Surviving are his wife Auguste Stoelting, five daughters. Mrs. Fred Wermuth. of Rochester; Mrs. Lewis Schworm, of Niagara Falls; Mrs. Elmore Herbst. of Lockport; Mrs. Clinton S. Hermanson and Mrs. Robert Strasburg of Niagara Falls. Leslie Read, both of Sanborn.

    Two sons, Burnet Strasburg. at home, a sister Matilda of Sanborn and one brother Walter of Niagara Falls, eight grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services will be held from the home In the Ward road, Sanborn. Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. with the Rev. Frank N. Taft officiating. Interment will be In Mt. View cemetery Pekln.

    Highly Respected Sanborn Resident to Be Buried in Pekin.
    SANBORN, March 5.—The funeral of Clinton F . Sanborn, 63 years old, who died Thursday at the family home here, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the local M. E. church. Private services will be held at the residence and interment will be in Mount View ceme-tery, Pekin. Mr. Sanborn is survived by his wife Clara E.. three daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Franks. Mrs. Helen Hermanson, Mrs. Viola Read, all of Sanborn, two sons. Dean S., of Sanborn, and Dr. Lee R.. of Angola. Also ten grandchildren and one brother James L. of Ossinike, Mich. H e was a member of Forest Lodge No. 202, I. O. O. F . , of Sanborn, of Niagara Lodge N o . 375. F. & A. M, of Lockport. He was born at Sanborn on May 8. 1864. in the same house in which he passed away. He was engaged in various business enterprises and also bought and shipped hay , fruit and vegetables. He had resided in Sanborn all his life. Was a member of the Republican County Committee and a Justico ot the Peace, which office he held for 12 years. He was a well known and highly respected citizen. A member of The First M. E . Church and always actively interested in all community affairs. He will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and neighbors.
