Another old citizen who has just gone
to his reward Is Humphrey E. Slocum
who, In the old village days, was a
prominent business man of the community.
He at one time represented
the Second Niagara district in the New
York.State Assembly. Old residents
will recall his drygoods store In Falls
street when he was associated in business
with the late Thomas V. Welch.
Mr. Slocum left the city many years
ago. He made his home in Beaver
Falls. N. Y where he passed away, but
his remains are to be brought here to be
interred in Oakwood cemetery. Those
who recall Mr. Slocum will remember
him as a fine type of citizen with a deep
interest in the welfare of Niagara Falls
in the service and affairs of which he
gave many years of his life.

Humphrey Ellas Slocum, former assemblyman
and who at one time conducted
a dry goods business here and
was widely known among older residents
of the city, died Saturday in
Beaver Falls and burial will take place
In Oakwood cemetery', this city, at 11
a.m. tomorrow.
Mr. Slocum was born near Northvllle,
Fulton county, this state, on
Feb. 11, 1849, and was educated In the
public and select schools there. In
1867 he came to Niagara Falls and engaged
In the dry goods business, with
his brother as a partner, under the
firm name of J. N. Slocum and Brother.
The business was moved to
Geneva In 1875 and was conducted
successfully for 13 years, after which
it was dissolved. Mr. Slocum then
returned to Niagara Falls and
purchased a half interest in a dry
goods business with the late Thomas
V. Welch.
This business was conducted under
the firm name of H. E. Slocum and
company for four years. Selling his
interest to his partner in 1892, Mr.
Clocum moved to Beaver Falls, Lewis
county, where he engaged in the
manufacture of wood pulp and pulp
board under the firm name of The J.
P. Lewis Company, Inc.
Mr. Slocum was a Republican and
active in the affairs of his party in
Lewis county. He was delegate to
several state conventions and was
elected to the assembly in 1903. He
was re-elected In 1904 and In 1911 was
again elected. He served on many
Important committees in the assembly.
In 1874 Mr. Slocum married Miss
Frances Marion Binkley, Niagara Falls.
She died several years ago. Surviving
Mr. Slocum are two sons. J. Fred
Slocum, Buffalo, and Harry S. Slocum,
Bluefield, W. Va
