    NORTH TONAWANDA —
    Clarence "Herk" E. Hurtubise, age 83, of North Tonawanda, passed away on November 1, 2012 at Buffalo General Hospital. Mr. Hurtubise was born on July 16, 1929 in North Tonawanda, son of the late Clarence and Marguerite (nee Sommer) Hurtubise.
    Mr. Hurtubise was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a graduate of RIT and the University of Houston. Mr. Hurtubise was owner of Your Type Printing in North Tonawanda. He was a member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish in North Tonawanda, where he served as a Eucharist minister. Clarence served as president and on the board of directors for various organizations through out the area.
    Mr. Hurtubise is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Margaret "Midge" Mary (nee Spencer) Hurtubise; devoted father of Kenneth (Deborah), Stephen (Sharon), Michael Hurtubise, Betsy Jackson, Patricia Geist and Nancy (Wyatt) Yee; brother of Donald (Barbara), Douglas (Sandy), Joseph (Barbara) and Daniel (Shirley) Hurtubise; proud grandfather of 15.
    The family will greet relatives and friends on SUNDAY from 7-9 PM in the WATTENGEL Funeral Home, 307 Oliver St., North Tonawanda. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday at 10 AM from St. Jude the Apostle Parish, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Meals on Wheels of Niagara County or Red Jacket Club.

    Herman B. Sommer, Daily Press Editor, Succumbs at 69
    Herman B. Sommer, 69, editor of the Daily Press, died in his home at 797 Sweeney St. last night. A native of North Tonawanda and a graduate of North Tonawanda High School, Mr. Sommer in 1933 founded a weekly paper called the Niagara Frontier Press. It became a daily in 1940 under the name, Niagara Press, and later it was renamed Daily Press. Mr. Sommer was a former local correspondent for the old Buffalo Express. He worked for a time as an agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in the Tonawandas and in New Jersey. He was a member of Salem Evangelical & Reformed Church, the North Tonawanda Firemen's Benevolent Association and the Columbia Hook and Ladder Company. He once held the positions of city clerk and superintendent of public works in North Tonawanda. He was an active Republican. The late Addison Sommer was his son. Mr. Sommer is survived by his wife, Lucy A.; a son, Sterling; three daughters, Mrs. John Heimgartner and Mrs. Clarence Hurtubise and Mrs. Lucille Williams of Buffalo; a sister, Mrs. William Glenn of Central Square, N.Y.; a brother, Alfred Sommer of Pittsburgh, and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the residence. Rev. Walter Hetzel of Salem Church will officiate. Interment will be in White Chapel Memorial Park.

She is survived by three sons, Charles L. and Herman B. of North Tonawanda, and Alfred G. of Pittsburg, Pa., and two daughters, Catherine E. Zaggel of North Tonawanda and Mrs. Clara Glenn of Oneida. The funeral will be held from the house on Thursday afternoon.

    MRS. MAGDELENA SOMMER
    Mrs. Magdelena Sommer, 81 years old, died at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, 214 Falconer street, after a week's illness. Mrs. Sommer was a life-long and beloved resident of North Tonawanda. Surviving are three sons, Charles L. and Herman B. Sommer of North Tonawanda and Alfred G. Sommer of Pittsburgh and two daughters, Mrs. Clara Glenn of Oneida and Mrs. Catherine Zaggel of North Tonawanda. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the late residence. Rev. C. L. Braun will conduct the services and interment will be in Sweeney cemetery. Other survivors are three brothers, John Hartel, Pasadena, Cal., and Henry and William Hartel, Buffalo; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Lapp, Sumas, Wash. Mrs. Elizabeth ******, Watkins Glenn, Mrs. Kate Bush, North Tonawanda, and Miss Marie Hartel, Buffalo, and 17 grandchildren.

    Schroeder Rites Sunday, October 6
    WHEATFIELD, Oct. 4 - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Schroeder, 78, who died yesterday at her home, Niagara Falls boulevard, will be held Sunday at 2 p. m. from the home and at 2:30 from St. Mark's church. Interment will be in Messing cemetery.
    Mrs. Schroeder is survived by three daughters. Mrs. Charles Mittelstaedt and Mrs. Henry Thiele, of Wheatfield, and Mrs. Herman B. Sommer, of North Tonawanda; one son, William Schroeder, of Wheatfield; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Keppler and Mrs. Ernest Beutel, of St. Paul, MN, and three brothers, Rev, Albert and August Haseley, of St. Paul. Minn., and Frederick Haseley of Walmore.
