NORTH TONAWANDA — Joseph Lata, 85, of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2012 in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Williamsville, NY. Born on May 27, 1926 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late John and Zosia (Ziolek) Lata and attended local schools.
Joseph was employed by the Buffalo News as a printer. On September 21, 1944 he joined the US NAVY serving as an Aviation Machinist on the NTC Sampson, NAGS Miami and NAS Fort Lauderdale receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Medal. On January 28, 1954, he was honorably discharged as an ADE 3. He volunteered for Compeer and Visions Unlimited, enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters, Joanne Macswan, Patricia (Kevin) O'Rourke, both of North Tonawanda, NY, Jeanne Morohn of Wheatfield, NY; his grandchildren, John (Jill) Macswan, Christy (Rob) Feightner, Joseph (Kim) Marohn, Justin Scricco, Erin Bennett, Danny Evans and Linda (Jeremy) Catoe; seven great-grandchildren; his sister, Genevieve (late Raymond) Smith of Pennsylvania; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary A. (Luczywek) Lata; his daughter, Marie Burden; and sister, Jane Domzal.
NO PRIOR VISITATION. A Memorial Service with Military Honors will take place on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 10:00 AM at ZAJAC FUNERAL HOME, INC., 319 24th St., cor. Welch Ave., Niagara Falls, NY, with Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating. Burial at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Lung Association of WNY, Inc., 210 John Glen Dr. #3, Buffalo, NY 14228.
