Niagara Gazette - 6/5/1951
A life dedicated to public service
and to the wefare of this community
was brought to a close with the
death late yesterday after a long
illness at his home, 815 James
avenue, at the age of 68, of Charles
Woodward.
Contributions over a period of
many years to public, fraternal
and service organizations made
Mr. Woodward's life a most outstanding
one.
A native of Middlewich, Eng., he
was brought to this city as a child
and began to express in a tangible
way his interest in the problems of
juveniles shortly after graduating
from high school and entering the
business world.
In 1906, when he founded the
Woodward Agency, Inc., one of this
area's better-known insurance firms,
he was serving as an unpaid volunteer
probation officer. His experiences
in this field and his growing
attachment to the welfare of boys
were factors which prompted him,
with a number of associates, to organize
the Niagara Falls Rotary
club, an organization which had
among its objectives the promotion
of youth work.
For seven years Mr. Woodward
served as the club's secretary then
served a term as president in 1924-
25. Fifteen years ago one of his
greatest opportunities to assist boys
was presented when the Rotary club
undertook the sponsorship of the Niagara
Falls Boys Club. Inc., and in
this project he was a member of the
committee which completed the
groundwork.
One of the rare requests he made
of friends and associates was that
they contribute to the support of
the Boys' club in his memory.

Mr. Woodward was active also
in Niagara River Lodge 785, F and
AM, Niagara Falls Insuring Agents

rectors of the Martha H. Beeman
foundation, a director of the YMCA
and the Family and Children's Aid
society and an active worker in
many public fund-raising campaigns.
