    A refugee family brought out of
    Germany by the Church World service
    under the sponsorship of the Cui
    Bono class of St. Paul's Methodist
    church school has been officially
    welcomed to this country by the
    church's minister and congregation.
    The refugees are Akim Birjukow,
    his wife. Dora, and their two small
    sons. Josef, six. and Nikolaj. 4 1/2.
    On hand to greet the Birjukow
    family at the morning worship Sunday
    were the Rev. John A. Redmond
    and George V. Leazer, president of
    Cui Bono class.
    Mr. Birjukow, who was born in

    Ukrainia, was a farmer in his youth
    and also had experience as a miner
    and metal worker. In 1943 he was
    deported from the Ukraine into Germany
    as a laborer and worked in a
    factory in Munich during the war.
    After the liberation of Germany he
    was a worker in a DP work camp.
    Mrs. Birjukow is a native of
    Poland.
    During the war single men and
    women in Poland were deported to
    Germany Since her three sisters
    and one brother were all married at
    the time of deportation, Dora was
    the only member of her family sent
    off to Germany alone at the age of
    14 and has seen none of her family
    since her. departure from Poland.
    She met Mr. Birjukow after the war
    ended and Americans were in Germany.
    Upon their arrival in Niagara
    Falls the family were guests of Mr.
    and Mrs. Leazer and their son, Billii.
    while housing for them was being
    arranged. The father will work for
    the Vanadium corporation.
    Both Mr .and Mrs. Birjukow speak
    Russian and German and Mrs. Birjukow
    speaks Polish. They plan to
    learn English as soon as possible.
    Josef will enter school where the
    subject of English will become his
    major endeavor.
    Through Mr. Matthew Krencisz,
    a member of St. Paul's church, acting
    as interpreter, Mr. and Mrs. Birjukow
    have expressed their joy at
    arriving in America and their great
    pleasure in being surrounded with so
    many friendly people. They are
    most anxious to learn English and
    remove the language barrier so that
    their new friends can understand
    them.

    TOWN OF NIAGARA — Loraine M. Hugill, of the Town of Niagara, died on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. He was 84. Born in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1926, Loraine was the son of the late Nellie Craft.

    Loraine attended Pennsylvania schools and served in the US Army during World War II as Cannoneer with the Battery C 945th AAA AW Bn and with the H & S CO 656th ENGR TOPO BN. In June of 1951, he married the former Delores Smeal and settled in Niagara Falls. Mr. Hugill worked for the Olin Chemical Company as a chemical operator for many years, retiring in 1988. He was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 1 for 25 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Portage Post 1465. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

    Survivors include his wife, Delores (Smeal) Hugill; his loving daughters, Debrah (Gerald) Townsend of Greenwood, SC, Vickie (James) Birjukow of Sanborn and Carol (Daniel, Sr.) Wirth of the Town of Niagara; his loving grandchildren, Charlotte (David) Michalski; Jonathan (Cheri) Townsend, Amanda (Jason) Carozzi, Jamie Birjukow, Rebecca, Michelle and Daniel Wirth; three great-grandchildren, Cameron Townsend, Franklin Townsend and Brian Butkowski, Jr; a niece, Barbara Todd (Jim) of Rogers, Ohio. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothea Copeland; and a nephew, David Copeland.

    Friends may call on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the LANE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 8622 Buffalo Avenue, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 AM. Interment will be held at Acacia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 4001 McKoon Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14305.

    Delores J. Hugill, 93, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on June 11, 2023 at Our Lady of Peace HCF in Lewiston, NY.  Born in West Decatur, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Adeline (Socie) Smeal.
    In June 1951, Delores married Loraine M. Hugill in Philipsburg, PA and the family then moved in Niagara Falls, NY.  Mr. Hugill predeceased her on March 15, 2011 after 59 years of marriage. Delores was employed as a Lunch Aide and Teacher’s Aide with the Niagara Falls Board of Education, working at Harry F. Abate Elementary School for 10 years. She was a proud and active Girl Scout Leader for her daughters.  In her later years, she enjoyed playing Bingo and having lunch with friends at the Calvin Richards Senior Center in the Town of Niagara.   Delores was also an avid Buffalo Bills fan.  Above all, she cherished the time she spent with her family and especially loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Delores is survived by her daughters, Debrah (Gerald) Townsend, Vickie (James) Birjukow, and Carol (Daniel Sr.) Wirth; her grandchildren, Charlotte (David) Michalski, Jonathan Townsend, Amanda (Jason) Carozzi, Jaime (Jake) Harris, Rebecca Wirth, Michelle Wirth, and Daniel Wirth, Jr.; her great grandchildren, Cameron (Francie) Townsend, Franklin Townsend, Brian Butkowski, Jr., David Harris, Adalynn Harris, Abagail Harris, and Connor Carozzi; her nephew, Dennis Smeal, her niece, Barbie (James) Todd, as well several cousins.  In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Raymond (late Phyllis) Smeal, and her nephew, David (late Dorothy) Copeland.
    Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15 from 3 – 7 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY 14304 where funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 AM.   Entombment in Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to a charity of one’s choice.   Visit mjcoluccifuneralchapel.com for online condolences.
