| 101 | Rose Muto June 27, 2023 Rose Muto, 91, of Lewiston, NY, and formally of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away in the presence of her family on Tuesday, June 27, 2023. Born April 8, 1932, in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of the late Dominick Gara and Angelina (Archie) Gara. Raised in Niagara Falls, Rose attended local schools. Rose married the love of her life, Victor on July 30, 1948, and were married for 71 years prior to his passing in 2020. They lived in Niagara Falls for 50 years before moving to Lewiston. Together they raised 8 children and were blessed with 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. A devoted wife and mother of eight, she spent much of her life tending to the home and raising her children. She was a longtime member of Mt. Carmel Church and their mother’s club. When her husband purchased the New York Fish Market, she was always seen behind the counter happily helping the customers. When at home, her greatest love was avidly cooking and baking very large amounts of food for her family and friends. Above all, Rose will be remembered for her loving and caring ways. She dedicated her life to entire family who will miss her dearly. | 102 | Ruth E. DeVoe passed away February 20, 2017 in Absolut of Gasport. Born in Lockport on May 22, 1933 she was the daughter of Henry and Lula (Hert) DeVoe. Ruth enjoyed horseback riding, riding her bike, birds and other animals. | 103 | Salvatore 'Sal' B. Spatorico, 69, of Niagara Falls, NY, died Sunday, December 4th, 2016 at Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, NC. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on April 15th, 1947. He was the son of the late Joseph and Carmelina (Costantino) Spatorico. Sal worked for Olin Corporation from 1970-1980. He then worked for Laborer's Local 91 until he retired. Sal also owned and operated his DJ business, Eastside Sounds. He enjoyed playing golf and entertaining his family and friends with his jokes and singing. He so loved life. He was also a proud member of Gamblers Anonymous since 1976. Sal was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. Joseph Spatorico; and a sister, Jean Spatorico. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Patricia (Brandon) Spatorico; two sons, Joseph of Niagara Falls, NY, and Michael (Laura) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; grandsons, Victor and Garrett; granddaughters, Abigail Cox, Madalyn Spatorico, Tabitha Schumann and Karissa Briggs. | 104 | Salvatore J. Bruno On June 29, 2022, we said our final goodbyes to our beloved father and grandfather. He left this earth surrounded by an abundance of love. Sal was born on September 16, 1934 to the late Joseph and Flora (Ventry) Bruno. He was the third oldest of 9 children. In 1965, he fell in love and married Frances (Ligammari) Bruno and together they raised 3 beautiful daughters who gave him 18 grandchildren who adored him. Mrs. Bruno predeceased him on April 22, 2017. Sal worked at Loblaws and later retired from the Niagara Falls Board of Education. He was member of the Italian Sons and Daughters, Frontier Fire Hall, LaSalle Sportsman’s Club and the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed golfing, camping, bocce, playing cards and LCR. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He is survived by his daughters, Mary (Dennis) Pysniak and Jerlanda (Kevin) Mathies; his grandchildren, Frances (Patrick) Nowak, Gina (Rick) Stanton, Christopher Pysniak, Giana (Anthony) Hook, Elizabeth “Tink” (Sean) LaFountain, and Annabelle Rose Bruno; his great-grandchildren, Heather Maines, Patrick, Rachael, Natalia, Marcus, US Army (Sierra), Patrick, Lucas, Twinkle Toes, Silas, Jax, Ellie, Gia and Lily; His siblings, Caroline (late George) Strott, Mary Anne (late Earl) Forbes, Joseph (late Antoinette) Bruno, Larry (Lori) Bruno, Francine Bruno, Thomas Bruno, John (Karen) Bruno as well as many loving family members including his nieces, nephews and cousins. Schulz, 82, who worked as a senior companion with Niagara County Senior Companion for the past 10 years, died Thursday (Aug. 28, 2003) in Erie County Medical Center from injuries she suffered in a car accident July 25 on Shawnee Road south of Slusaric Road. The former Alice Laughlin was born in Chicago and moved to Niagara Falls with her family as a child. She was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and later received her licensed practical nurse degree from Trott Vocational School. Mrs. Schulz enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her family. Her husband, Walter, died in 1997. | 107 | Stanley Ohol 79, passed away on July 13, 2023 at the Elderwood Health Care Facility in Lockport, NY. Born October 4, 1943 to the late Andrew and Estella (Lopacki) Ohol. Stanley was a resident of the town of Cambria his entire life. He graduated from Starpoint Central in 1961, and worked on the family dairy farm all his life, which became known as the Ohol Bros, until finally retiring in 2020. While never married he cared for his elderly mother (who was widowed) until her death in 2000. He continued his compassion for family by caring for his handicapped brother until his death in 2011, for which his family was and is most grateful. He is survived by his siblings, Jayne (late Clark) Affolter, Joseph (Stephania) Ohol, and Thomas (Brenda) Ohol; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and cousins. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of Sylvester C. ‘Sonny’ (Kathleen) Barone and the late Anna (nee Allotta) Barone. Sil, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, attended local schools and graduated from Niagara-Wheatfield High School. He was a talented home builder and owned Sil Barone Homes, Inc. in Niagara Falls for many years. In 2007 he moved to Fort Myers, FL where he currently operated West Coast Renovations. He was a longtime member and former president of the Niagara County Builders Association, as well as the New York State Home Builders Association. An avid outdoorsman, Sil enjoyed fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He was also a car and motorcycle enthusiast. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his beloved family and friends who will miss him dearly. | 109 | Thaddeus 'Teddy'/'Spider' John Sikora, 90, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2017 at Northgate Manor in North Tonawanda. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, on May 3, 1926 to the late Anthony and Stanislawa 'Stella' (Czekala) Sikora. Teddy resided in Niagara Falls, then later in North Tonawanda, NY, and his final years at Northgate Manor. He attended Gaskill Jr. High School and Trott Vocational High School. At Trott he played halfback on the city championship football team and was given the nickname 'Spider.' After graduating from Trott, he joined the Army on August 18, 1944 to serve in WWII, graduating from NCO Training. He was stationed in Fort Benning, GA., training the new recruits for the war. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant from the 29th Infantry Battalion on July 7, 1946. Spider received the WWII Victory medal, American Campaign medal and the Good Conduct medal for his service to his country. After the war he married the love of his life, Florence Bannon, on May 17, 1947 and they were married for 57 years until her passing on March 17, 2004. Teddy retired from Carborundum Company, Bonded Division, after 40 years, in 1983. Spider enjoyed working in his yard, watching the Buffalo Bills, playing golf, bowling, bingo and weekly casino trips. Teddy was a past member of the P.R.U.C bowling team, B.P.O. Elks lodge, American Legion (Niagara Falls) and St. Jude's RC Church (St. Alberts) located in North Tonawanda, NY. Thaddeus is survived by his children, Nancy (William) Wojtowicz, Diane (James) Horst and Sandra (Mark) Caldwell; four grandchildren, Adrienne Friedrichs, Ryan (Deanna) Caldwell, Brian (Colleen) Wojtowicz and Kelly Caldwell; five great-grandchildren, Connor, Tanner, Matthew, Zach and Molly. | 114 | Union Sun and Journal Peter J. Licata, 58, of Lockport, a retired teacher, died Friday, Aug. 30, 1991, at home. A lifelong Lockport resident, he was valedictorian in the first graduating class at DeSales High School Licata earned his bachelor's degree in Spanish from Niagara University and master's degree in education from Canisius College. He taught English, Latin and Spanish at Lockport Senior High School and North Park Junior High School for 25 years. In that time, he also worked briefly for the Niagara County Sheriff's Department. Licata was a Fourth Ward city alderman for two terms and the youngest president elected to the city Board of Police Commissioners. He also served as summer Parks and Recreation Supervisor, was a member of the city Democratic Committee and an elected delegate to the 1980 Democratic Convention in New York City. Licata played football and basketball at DeSales and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lockport Council 319, and B. Leo Dolan Post 410, American Legion. He was a senior training officer at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base, North Carolina, in the summers. He retired in 1978 from the Marine with the rank of major. Surviving are his wife, Anne E. Kenney; three daughters and three sons, Elizabeth Anne of Buffalo, Peter John of Lockport, Mark Joseph of Santa Barbara, Calif., Catherine Grace of Buffalo, Michael Paul (Nancy) and Mary Patricia, both of Lockport, and a brother, Anthony of Phoenix, Ariz. Wollenberg of Middleport. Residing in the Gasport area most of her life, she was a graduate of the last class of the Middleport High School (1944). A cosmetologist and beauty salon owner for 50 plus years, she was a graduate of the Robert’s School of Beauty Culture and the Robert Fiance Hair Design Institute of New York City. Through the years she and her husband were active in many community events in the Royalton area. Her library and love of History and Genealogy brought forth interest and membership in numerous Historical Societies. Among the highlights in their life of volunteerism was the chairing and co-chairing of the ceremonies held at the Town of Royalton Bicentennial and the Gasport Sesquicentennial celebration in May of 1976 with the dedication of the art sculpture “Flame” in the park by the Erie Canal at Gasport, NY. The Town of Royalton Historical Society’s interest in procuring recognition for the Royalton native Belva A. Lockwood, who ran for President if the United States, not once but twice 1884,1888 on a U.S. Postage Stamp resulted in a four-year campaign. It was successfully completed with a First Day of Issue Ceremonies in Middleport, N.Y in June 1986. She was a past Matron and life member of the Gasport Chapter O.E.S.#153 with 72 plus years of membership. Her membership in the Covenant United Church in Gasport covered many years. A sister Phyllis A. George of Rice, Texas predeceased her. She is survived her son Bryan Wollenberg (Cathi McCaa), a niece Vicky Young of Rice Texas and a nephew James George (Sheri) of Garland Texas. There will be no calling hours. | 146 | Niagara Gazette - 4/18/1928 A very pretty wedding took place Saturday, April 14th at the Zlon Lutheran church when Mabel May Budde, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Budde became the bride of George Henry Liersch, son of Mrs. Henry' Liersch. The ceremony was solemnized at 5:30, the Rev. Herman Brezing officiating. Mrs. Comerford, organist of the church played the wedding march. The bride was lovely In pale pink georgette with hat to match. She wore a corsage of orchids and lily of the valley. The maid of honor, Rita Liersch, sister of the groom was gowned In blue georgette with hat to match. She wore a corsage of pink sweet peas and rosea. Mr. Elmer Wilcox was best man. Mrs. Budde, mother of the bride was gowned in navy blue georgette with cream lace. Mrs. Liersch, mother of the groom was gowned in black and white fig- ured crepe. LeU Homo Owing lo Domestic Unpleasantness When a Lad 13 Years Old-Has Fought the World Well-Did Not Know His. Father Was Dead. George Meredith Barker, the missing son of the late noted landscape photographer, who disappeared from here when he was 13 years of age, has returned home. Probably no more startling piece of news has been received in this city in some time. The young man, who is now between 19 ftod 20 years of age, was believed by many to be dead, although some claim to have seen him in New York city and these rumors have tumed out to be true. Young Barker has returned to his old home and when seen by a GAZETTE repre-. sentative was surrounded by a group of his sisters and the neighbors in the pleasant garden of the Buffalo avenue home. That all his sisters were very happy over .finding their long lost brother, who has grown into a, tall, slender young man, was evinced by the happy and admiring glances cast at him and the many questions with which they plied him. All the neighbors also gave the prodigal a hearty welcome, and certainly the young man has everything to feel happy over in coming back to the home he left so suddenly many years ago. The story of the discovery of the missing brother, for whose whereabouts a reward had been offered before the will of his father was found and .admitted to probate is quite interesting. On Wednesday morning Miss Mary Barker broke the seal of a letter written in a strange handwriting and dated New York. Its contents greatly surprised and delighted her. It was a letter purporting to be from her brother, asking after the family and disclosing his whereabouts and telling about himself. Miss Barker intrusted the mission of going to New York to find the young man to Mr. Samuel Devlin, her affianced, and the result was that Mr. Devlin and young Mr. Barker stepped from the sleeping car of the West Shore train at 8:45 o'clock this morning, took a carriage and were driven to the Buffalo avenue house. The story of the young man's struggle for a place in the world was interesting. The cause of his running away from home was some domestic unpleasantness. He finally reached New York city and had quite an experience for the first two or three years making a living. He adopted the vocation of an artist and studied hard to be a sketch artist with varying success.. The last two or three, years he has been making rapid progress. He chummed with several artists and newspaper men. who helped and stimulated the boy in his work, securing him orders from various publica- tions, all of which were pleased with his work, He is now on the way to success in His chosen profession. He is shrewd and very clever, and the future promises some very bright things for him. Young Barker, in telling about his writ- ing home said that it cost him quite a struggle whether to do so or not. He felt that he had established himself; that his position was one of which he could well feel proud, and finally, after a long debate with, himself, he decided to write. This he did on Tuesday, and the letter was re- ceived Wednesday, as noted above, and Friday morning he was at home. The young man was ignorant of his father's death as well as that of his stepmother. He passed through here two years ago on his way to the World's Fair, where he passed a month or more, and again on his return, but he never disclosed his identity nor made any enquiries. The future for the present is out of discussion with, the boy. His sisters, of course, will try to keep him here with them. That he will follow his chosen vocation is assured. ALSO Niagara Gazette - 11/21/1946 GEORGE MEREDITH BARKER To the editor of The Gaiatte: Announcement of the death of George Meredith Barker, 71 years old. at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., a native of Niagara Falls, recalls that his father, George Barker, was one of the most distinguished of Niagara Falls photographers of a half century and more ago. On June 3. 1946. the Gazette published an article by this writer which Included a description of numerous historical relics, pictures and newspaper articles presented to the writer by James May. who had retired after a connection of 21 years with Walker's Laundry and has removed from the city. Among these contributions was a group photograph. Because of the fact that Miss Bertha Kugel. who afterwards became Mrs. Brant and was the mother of Mrs. James May, was connected with the photograph studio of George Barker in old Main street, opposite the Cataract House, It "was assumed that the photograph was a Barker famlly group, but Identification was not Immediate. The photograph was taken in front of a house but the building did not look like the Barker residence in Buffalo avenue. Only about a week ago this photogaph was shown to Mrs. Samuel J. Devlin, a daughter of George Barker and a sister of Oeorge Meredith Barker. She Identified It at once and named the persons shown In the picture. As stated In the previous article, the well groomed whiskers of the central figure made It almost certain that It was George Barker. Mrs. Devlin said that those In the picture Included Mr. and Mrs. George Barker, with a small girl in long dress on Mrs. Barker's lap, which was the present Mrs. Devlin; Mr. and Mrs. George Shlpman, Mrs. Barker's parents, and Miss shlpman. their daughter. The house In which the photograph was taken was that of Miss Elizabeth Porter, daughter of General Peter B. Porter, and was connected with the farm that General Porter bought when the state of New York sold the Mile Strip In 1805. which was later owned by Peter A. Porter, General Porter's grand-. Son. and which was sold by him to the Niagara Falls Power company and on which the great power stations of that company on Buffalo avenue are now located. As stated In a previous article George Barker had an International reputation and was awarded many medals both at home and abroad. The great quantity of stereographs, which are displayed In the old fashioned stereoptlcon. were produced in Niagara Falls, and the greater quantity of these, as shown In a large collection at hand, were made by George Barker.
