T o w n of T o n a w a n d a, unexpectedly Monday (June 30, 1969) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, he had been a resident of the Tonawandas for the past 27 years, and had been employed at Hudson-Rumsey Co., Inc. in Buffalo for 28 years and was vice president of the company since 1968. He was a member of Payne Avenue Christian Church, Sutherland Lodge 827, F&AM, AASR, Valley of Buffalo. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice (nee Bennett) Bayliss: a d a u g h t e r , Mrs. Richard (Sylvia) Choboy of the Town of Tonawanda; three sons, John Y. Bayliss J r . and Peter D. B a y l i s s of K e n m o r e and Michael J. Bayliss of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. G l e n n ( B e t t y ) W a l l s of Fairmont, W. 21304 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/10/1929 Tonawanda Business Man Drops Dead In His Store While displaying some of the new currency, which he had just drawn from the bank, to clerks in his flour, feed and seed store at 48-50 Young street shortly before 11 o'clock this morning Fred Pfanner, Jr., dropped dead. Several physicians were called but Mr. Pfanner died within a few minutes after being stricken. Born in Tonawanda 66 years ago, Mr. Pfanner had resided here all his life. He had been in business in the store where he died since 1884, first in partnership with his brother, Alderman George Pfanner, later alone and for the past ten years with his son, Richard Pfanner, under the firm name of Pfanner and Son. Mr. Pfanner was stricken with paralysis six weeks ago but recovered sufficiently three weeks later to walk to his place of business where he visited two or three times a week. He walked to the bank of the First Trust company this morning and returned to the store. Physicians expressed the belief that the effort proved too much for him. Mr. Zimmerman, 73, and his wife, the former Ann Radtke, 70, were married July 8, 1919 in the home of Mrs. Zimmerman's parents by the late Rev. Andrew Hils, then pastor of Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church of which they have been lifelong members. The couple will be honored by their children at a family dinner in the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Ronald (Marion) Lum and Mr. Lum, of 1286 Moll St., North Tonawanda. . The couple's other children are Richard Zimmerman of Kenmore, and Mrs. Kenneth. (Leona) Pletcher of Tonawanda. They have five grandchildren: Diana. 21306 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/10/1969 A 90-year-old former Great Lakes lumber boat captain. William H. Booth, yesterday made his final crossing. Capt. Booth, w h o , h a d been in ill health for several weeks as a result of a broken hip, died in a Long Island nursing home where he was convalescing. His wife died Memorial Day. also having suffered a broken hip shortly before her death. Capt. Booth's death marks the end of a long line of skippers in the Booth family. The call of the sea was also answered by his father, four brothers and one of his own sons, who died six years ago. A native of Lambton. Ont.. Capt. Booth be-fan his more than half-century career as a Great Lakes skipper shuttling lumber boats from various logging ports to North Tona- wanda when it was the "Lumber City." His own ship, "The Hazard." was retired when he began a career as captain on lake-going ships for the Huron-Portland Cement Co. out of Port Huron. Mich. When he was 65. Capt. Booth and his son. the late Capt. Fletcher W. Booth of North Tonawanda, joined forces to pilot destroyers and PT boats from shipyards at the Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City. Mich., to the Navy yards in Chicago for use during World War II. Their World War II task completed. Capt. Fletcher W. Booth opened the Pilot House Re s t a u r a n t in Nor th Tona- wanda. The restaurant still is op- erated by his widow. Capt. William H. Booth and his wife first retired to Saginaw, Mich., later moving to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Donald Hauffe of Baldwin, Long Island. Besides Mrs. Hauffe, Capt. Booth is survived by two other daughters, Mrs. Edward Snowman of Tonawanda, a NEWS Advertising Depart- ment employe, and Mrs. Roy Larsen of Saginaw Mich., and a son, William H. Boehnke. son of Mrs. Johanna Boehnke, 23 Maple street, previously reported missing before Rome has been killed in action according to a telegram from the War Department r e ceived yesterday. A resident of Detroit before he entered the service, Pvt. Boehnke was educated in Tonawanda's schools and was active in Salem church activities where he was a popular singer. While living in Tonawanda he worked at R. T. Jones Lumber Co. and the old T. J. Wilson Box plant. Landed at Anzro He entered service last year and after training at Camp Bland- ing, Florida he went overseas in March of this year. He landed at Casablanca and after a stay at Oran landed on the Anzio beachhead from which position he had been fighting up the Italian boot. He is survived by his mother, his wife, who lives in Detroit, two sisters and four brothers. One sister is Mrs. Robert Sparks of Tonawanda, the other Mrs. Alba Gulick lives in Detroit. 21316 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/12/1937 Captain Frank Hartman, one off the most widely known tug masters in this section of the country, died late Saturday at his home, 376 Morgan street. For more than 50 years he had been in command of tugs at the Tonawandas and in Buffalo. Captain Hartman was born on Grand Island 74 years ago. His father, the late Adam Hartman, was a pioneer tugman in the Tonawandas, owning and operating such craft on an extensive scale. From early boyhood Captain Hartman took an active interest and all his life was devoted to tugging. When Captain Hartman's father established the Hartman line in the Tonawandas the former became captain of several of his boats, including the Tonawanda, Gratwick and Constitution. These tugs were operated in towing lumber carriers on the Niagara river. Those were the days when the Tonawandas held the leadership in the lumber markets of the world. Line Was Absorbed In 1901 the Great Lakes Towing company absorbed the Hartman line and Captain Hartman continued in the business by taking charge of boats owned by the company. These included the tugs Georgia and Maryland. As master of tugs owned and operated by the Great Lakes Towing company Captain Hartman's duties took him to distant points. He was assigned to a number of long distance towing jobs by his employer because of his ability to handle the most trying marine service. During the World War, when a number of lake carriers were cut in two to permit them to be towed to the seaboard, he was assigned to the job. His last work as a tug master Parwas performed last January. In February he was stricken with the illness which finally resulted in his death. Had Wide Acquaintance Captain Hartman had a wide acquaintance among the volunteer firemen of the Tonawandas. He was the second oldest fireman in point of service in the Union Hook and Ladder company. He became a member of the company 54 years ago. Four years ago his fellow firemen honored him with a 50- year gold service medal. This token of esteem was among the tugman's prized possessions. Captain Hartman was a charter member of the Licensed Tugmen's Protective association. He was a member of the St. Francis church during the greater part of the 55 years he resided in Tonawanda, having come here from Grand Island at that time. He was trustee of the church for the past 35 years. He had been prominently identified with the Holy Name society of the church- Member of K. of C. He was one of the most active of the members of Twin City Council, No. 413, Knights of Columbus. He was a fourth degree member of the council. His wife was the late Elizabeth Fink Hartman. Surviving are two sons, John A. and Alysius, Tonawanda; five daughters. Sister Alicia of St. Bartholomew's Convent, Buffalo, Mrs. Raymond Mahar, Mrs. Howard Sullivan and the Misses Mildred and Norma Hartman; six grandchildren, all of the Tonawandas; a sister. Sister Hyonima of Sacred Heart Convent, Buffalo and a brother, Capt. Louis Hartman, Tonawanda. Rites will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 o'clock at the residence, and at 10 o'clock at the St. Francis church. The Very Rev. John A. Weismantel will officiate, and burial will be in Mt Olivet cemetery. 21347 | North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 7/17/1935 Welland, Ont., July 17 (U.P.)- Camille Bernard, 8, of East Well- and, was instantly killed today when struck by an automobile on the highway near here. Coroner Duncan Allison investigated the accident. ALSO Niagara Gazette - 7/26/1935 WELLAND. Ont., July 26.-"We the Jury find that Camlile Bernard came to his death on July 17th as the result of being struck by a car driven by Peroy McKeever of St. Catharines at an excessive rate of speed, the Injuries being a broken neck and a fracture to the skull." This was the verdict returned yesterday afternoon at Pelham Township Hall by t h e Jury enquiring into tho death of Camllle Bernard, 12 years old, one of t en children of Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Bernard. 43 Welland street east, who was Instantly killed shortly before 8 a. m. July 17th on Highway 20 near Fonthlll while he and several other persons were walking on their way to a berry patch. Police state a charge of criminal negligence has been laid against McKeever and h e Is to appear before Magistrate J. C. Massle on Wednesday, July 31.
