Dr. Eckerson leaves his wife, Dorothy, Weber Eckerson, several cousins and a large circle of friends. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, standard time, at the home, with interment at Mt Pleasant cemetery. The Rev. John Spender, of Buffalo, will officiate. Mrs. Raymond J. Walker at the piano, played appropriate selections as prelude to the wedding march which ushered in the wedding party. A ribbon aisle to the oriel, which was banked with Japanese palms, where the groom, attended by his brother, Bradley F. Walker, was stationed, was formed by Miss Faith Walker, Miss C. Jane Hurd, Mrs. Avery W. Walker and Mrs. John R. Walker. Preceding the bride came her attendants, her sister. Miss Shirley E. Walker, gowned to wine-colored velvet with Battenberg lace collar and attractive corsage. The bride was attractive In mldnlght-blue velvet, with grey accessories and becoming shoulder corsage. A prominent guest at the reception was Mrs. Sarah A. Bradley, of Niagara Falls, 87 years of age, grandmother of the groom. Her gift was a handmade butterfly applique quilt. A wedding breakfast, buffet style, was served to 70 guests. The two large three-tiered bride's and wedding cakes being cut ceremoniously by bride and groom respectively. The bride wore a street length frock of moss green with black accessories and a corsage of gardinias tied with silver ribbon. Miss Dolores Moll, maid of nonor, wore a street length dress of soldier blue with blue accessories and a corsage of pink roses, blue delphinium and baby's breath tied with pink ribbon. Albert Wolanske. brother of the groom, was best man. Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Bergholtz fire hall. Dinner was served at 6 o'clock to aoout 70 guests. 21607 | Niagara Gazette - 9/11/1940 Clair Michael Allen..widely known retired building contractor, of 743 Fifteenth street, died In Mount St. Mary's hospital this morning after a brief illness. He was 72 years old. Mr. Allen was born in Model City, son of the late Alphonse and Mary Clair Allen. He had lived in this city 60 years and for many years was a member of the Allen-Smith Contracting company. He built many of the city's important build- ings, including Mount St. Mary's hospital and a large number of homes. He was a member of the Ni- agara Falls Exempt Firemen's asso- ciation and had a host of friends throughout the community. His wife, Mrs. Catherine Allen, died four years ago. He is survived- by two sons. Fred J. Allen, of Washington; D. C , and Harold J. Allen, of Cincinnati; five daughters, Mrs. Catherine Frank, of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Mrs. Margaret McGreevy, Mrs.Edith House, Mrs. Mildred McSpadden and Miss Marion Allen, of this city; two brothers, Fred J. Allen and Alexander J. Allen, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Dorgan, also of this city. Six grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held from the family home at 8.30 am. 21613 | Niagara Gazette - 9/11/1951 A refugee family brought out of Germany by the Church World service under the sponsorship of the Cui Bono class of St. Paul's Methodist church school has been officially welcomed to this country by the church's minister and congregation. The refugees are Akim Birjukow, his wife. Dora, and their two small sons. Josef, six. and Nikolaj. 4 1/2. On hand to greet the Birjukow family at the morning worship Sunday were the Rev. John A. Redmond and George V. Leazer, president of Cui Bono class. Mr. Birjukow, who was born in Ukrainia, was a farmer in his youth and also had experience as a miner and metal worker. In 1943 he was deported from the Ukraine into Germany as a laborer and worked in a factory in Munich during the war. After the liberation of Germany he was a worker in a DP work camp. Mrs. Birjukow is a native of Poland. During the war single men and women in Poland were deported to Germany Since her three sisters and one brother were all married at the time of deportation, Dora was the only member of her family sent off to Germany alone at the age of 14 and has seen none of her family since her. departure from Poland. She met Mr. Birjukow after the war ended and Americans were in Germany. Upon their arrival in Niagara Falls the family were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Leazer and their son, Billii. while housing for them was being arranged. The father will work for the Vanadium corporation. Both Mr .and Mrs. Birjukow speak Russian and German and Mrs. Birjukow speaks Polish. They plan to learn English as soon as possible. Josef will enter school where the subject of English will become his major endeavor. Through Mr. Matthew Krencisz, a member of St. Paul's church, acting as interpreter, Mr. and Mrs. Birjukow have expressed their joy at arriving in America and their great pleasure in being surrounded with so many friendly people. 21635 | Niagara Gazette - 9/12/1964 YOUNGSTOWN - A grinding head-on collision in treelined River Road early today claimed the lives of four persons, including three teenagers. State police and residents who live near the accident scene termed it one of the worst in Niagara County history. Dead are: Robert Luzak, 26. 6713 Ralph Court, Town of Niagara, who was driving alone. Thomas F. Welch, 19, of 1099 Smith St., Buffalo. Roger W. Cowder, 17, Roosevelt Beach, Wilson. Janice Marilyn Barry, 16, oi Lake Road, Ransomville. State police were called to the scene shortly before 1 a.m. Swerved to Left Police said the Luzak vehicle was southbound in River Road about a mile north of Pletcher Road when it failed to make a curve, swerved into, the left lane and piled into the oncoming car carrying the three youngsters. Police said the Welch youth was driving the second car. He was also listed as the owner. The sound of the impact brought several nearby residents to the scene. One witness said it was the only two-car crash she could remember in the area. Scene of Accidents This winding section of River Road has been the scene.of several one-car accidents and several lives have been lost as a result of these s.mashups, mostly c r a s h es against trees. A 35-mile limit is posted for the five-mile stretch between Lewiston and Youngstown. Police said the damage done to the two vehicles indicated excessive rates of speed. An observer told the Gazette the car carrying the teen-agers was traveling at a high rate of speed and the other was moving at a normal pace. Victim Imprisoned Douglas Wagner of Youngstown, owner of a collision shop, was called by police to help extricate Luzak. Mr. Wagner said he had to cut through the door post and back of the car seat with a torch to remove the victim. He said the operation took about 15 minutes. The shoe of one of the victims was imbedded in the twisted remains of the dash and floorboard. The death vehicles were towed to Youngstown and left at Wagner's and Kulak's auto wrecking service. The .cars drew several curiosity seekers this morning. Shuns Road A youth peered into one of the cars and examined the piles of shattered glass and broken metal. He turned to a reporter and said: "I never take that road home anymore." Lewiston and Youngstown ambulance teams took the four victims to Memorial Hospital in Niagara Falls. Investigator R a l p h Fuller and Trooper Frank P a n z a headed the state police investigating team. They were aided by Frank Wasco of the Lewiston Village police and Constable Steven Sarkozy of the Town of Niagara. Oxygen was given some of the victims by first-aid teams. Toll Now Is 20 The Niagara County Sher- Iff's Department said the fatality toll rose to 20 as a result of the accident. The figure is for fatal crashes on" county highways outside the",, three cities. Miss Barry was a cheerleader and a member of the Yorkers Club at Wilson Cen* trab School. She was a senior. A friend of Janice said "she was a very pretty girl and a good student. She had red hair and freckles." The 300 enemy troops, herding women and children in front of them as human shields, broke through a U.S. cordon to attack the 101st Airborne Division, to which Sgt. Reid, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Reid, of 421 Seventh street, took place Monday, September 10, at 4 o'clock, at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church. The ceremony .was performed by Dr. Arthur H. Schmoyer. The organ music was furnished by Mrs. Elsie Vohburgh. The church was decorated with white gladioli. The bride was given in marriage by her brother, Mr. George F. Bates. She wore a gown of candlelight velvet with sweetheart neckline, prlndess style, with full skirt terminating in a short train. Her veil of tulle was in three-tiered effect; attached to a tulle period style coronet. She carried an arm bouquet of white gladioli. Miss Mary Alice Bates, niece of the bride, was maid of honor. She was attired in, a romantic gown of vintage wine velvet and wore a matching Juliet cap. White gladioli arm bouquet with wine ribbon accents were her flowers. The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Phillip Rdd. The mother of the bride wore a becoming gown of ; black , crepe, styled with side drape and trimmed with silk fringe. Her shoulder corsage was of white gardenias. The bridegroom's mother was charming In a navy jacket dress with white accents. White gardenias were worn on her shoulder. The wedding dinner was served for the immediate.families at the Prospect House. The bride's table was, centered with a three-tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and bridegroom. Bodkin, 49-year-old New York Central railroad engineer, of 518 Fifth street, died Saturday night in Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient for about six weeks. He was a native of Holley, N. Y., and had resided here 40 years. Widely known as "Red" Bodkin, he was active in sports circles here for many years and won a championship in the United States Navy during the first World War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Engineers. Mr. Bodkin is survived by a sister, Margaret T. Bodkin, of this city, and two brothers, John E. Bodkin, of this city, and Martin M. Bodkin, of Buffalo.
