Gasoline and Kerosene Missing From Storage Tank - Body of Watchman Manth Found Amid Ruins of Adamite Plant.
LOSS APPROACHES $300,000; POLICE TRAIL SUSPECTED MAN
North Tonawanda. Oct 29 - With armed guards standing watch over all lumber yards in this city and two special policemen detailed to guard the swing bridge leading to Tonawanda Island, where several large lumber plants are located, the residents of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda live tonight in fear of other outrages such as hate terrorized this city last night and today. Within the last twenty-four hours lumber interests of this city have a loss approaching $300,000 from fires supposed to be incendiary. In addition to this, the Adamite company's loss will reach $50,000.
Watchman's Body Found.
The body of William Manth of Gratwick, forty-four years old, watchman at the Adamite company plant, was found shortly before 8 o'clock this evening. A large number of men, under the leadership of Thomas J. Hamilton, searched all day among the ruins for the body. When found tonight the body was about twelve feet from the front of the building, lying face downward. From a superficial examination it would seem Manth, in his endeavor to escape when he discovered the building was on fire, had started toward the Street, been overcome by smoke and burned to death. The body which was severely burned, was taken from the ruins after having been viewed by the coroner and taken to Hump's undertaking rooms, where it now lies. John Manth, sixteen years old, son of the watchman, aided much of the time today in the search for his father's body. At one time, overcome by fatigue and the uncertainty as to the whereabouts of his father, the young man fainted. After he was revived he insisted upon resuming work. When the body was uncovered tonight, he was but a short distance away. Michael Swend and Joseph Gambus, who were with Manth last, say they left him about 2 o'clock near the Brady lumber yards, where all three had been watching the fire. Swead and Gambus returned to the Adamite plant started to eat their lunch, but were driven from the building by the tire. Swead and Gambus were driven out of the building without opportunity to get their outer clothing.

30764 The funeral for Fern Zimmerman, of Chokio, Minnesota will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, near Johnson, Minnesota, with Reverend Eugene Andrus officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Johnson.
Fern Amelia Kroening, daughter of Emil and Margaretha (Puchta) Kroening was born on November 10, 1916 in Sanborn, Minnesota. The family moved to Stevens County in 1920, where she grew up on the family farm with her six sisters and four brothers.
Fern attended District #20 country school near Alberta, Minnesota. As a teenager, she walked three miles into Alberta for violin lessons. Fern graduated from Morris High School, Morris, Minnesota and Moorhead Teachers College in Moorhead, Minnesota. Over the years, she taught at several country schools in Stevens and Traverse Counties and did substitute teaching in Chokio Public School.
Fern was united in marriage to Harvey Zimmerman on November 30, 1939 at Peace Lutheran Church in Morris. The couple was blessed with four children: Daryl, Gary, Sheryl, and Keith; and lived on the family farm north of Chokio.
Fern was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. She always told you she was proud to have the same birthday as Martin Luther.
She was very involved in the community; helping establish the Chokio Senior Center, where she enjoyed going there to play cards until she was 100 years old. She was Stevens County Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1987, and was named to the Governor’s Council on Aging.
Harvey and Fern were able to enjoy many trips together during their retirement. Fern loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She was an avid Twins and Vikings fan. Fern never mentioned it, but her sister, Marty told us how athletic she was, especially at playing softball. That might make it easier for many of our family to understand our competitive nature!

She is survived by three sons: Daryl (Gerilee) Zimmerman, Chokio, MN, Gary (Diane) Zimmerman, Rockford, MN and Keith (June) Zimmerman, Alexandria, MN; one daughter: Sheryl (John) Holsten, Alexandria; one sister: Juline Henderson, Las Vegas, NV; two sisters-in-law: Olga Kroening, Phoenix, AZ and Ruth Zimmerman, Chokio, MN; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. 30770 The hard to read marr. entry said he and his bride were widowed. Thus it did not show his father's name. However in the three birth entries of three children (1732-1736) it clearly showed a Heinrich Schwenk to be Johannes' father. Hans Jerg Sauter, Engelwirt, was GP. And in one or two of the christenings, the wife of local pastor was G Mother.

The mother A. Margarethe Mangold's maiden name Mangold appeared in about two of these entries which proves we have the correct Johannes Schwenk.

Patricia Peabody Roosevelt, Seattle-born society cyclone who died Tuesday of heart failure at age 74, could really make things happen.

She could pick up the phone and summon Bob Hope to a March of Dimes fund-raiser or Joe Namath to her daughter's graduation.

Enjoy a bridge game with the master, Charles Goren.

Or have a chat with Hillary Rodham Clinton.

After all, since 1960 when she remarried, she had only to say, "This is Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt calling . . ."

Mrs. Roosevelt was a lover of the limelight even before she became the daughter-in-law of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

"She was quite an Auntie Mame," said her sister Lee Evoy of Medina. "She had energy that wouldn't stop and was a rebel all her life. In fact, she was held back a grade at Forest Ridge for her antics."

In spite of the trouble she gave the Seattle Catholic school's nuns, Mrs. Roosevelt graduated in 1940. When her father insisted his girls partake in the war effort, she became a messenger at Boeing.

"If you could have seen her zipping around on a motor scooter!" said her sister. "It suited her."

Mrs. Roosevelt married Milton Whitehead in 1941. When he was sent overseas, she worked in an exclusive, Seattle dress shop. Later, she and a friend published the Seattle Blue Book - a social register that "stepped on quite a few toes," according to her sister.

An accomplished horsewoman, Mrs. Roosevelt also flouted convention - and the law - by driving a pony cart down Fifth Avenue to publicize her Children's Orthopedic Hospital Benefit Horse Show.

After her first marriage ended, she entered the real-estate business and moved to Phoenix, where she married Roosevelt. They enjoyed the social whirl of Portugal, England and Miami Beach before settling in Bellevue from 1977 to 1983.

She later moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., where she died.

"She was just very, very artistic and could sew and decorate, and do all those things my sister and I could never do," said her sister Nina O'Neil of Everett. "She was never afraid to speak her mind."

Gretchen Roosevelt of Seattle said her mother taught her and her brothers to stand up and state their case:

"But I don't think any of her children were as gutsy as she was. She had a real `can-do' attitude."

Other survivors include her sons David Roosevelt, of Seattle, Ford Roosevelt, Van Nuys, Calif., and James Roosevelt, Hollywood, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Elliott, died in 1990.

Memorial Mass will be said at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Bridget Church, 4900 N.E. 50th St., Seattle
