31357 | Utica Daily Press Vernon-Charles Burg, 81. died Jan. 17, 1944, in his home here following a lingering illness. He was born in Mohawk Hill near Boonville, son of George and Mary Brick Burg. Whenhe was an infant the famiy moved to Ver- non Center. In 1889 he married Miss Frances Ammon. He resided in Vernon Center for 10 years, following the ooccupation of farmer. In 1920 the ocuple moved to this village where he was employed by the N. A. Tyler Lum- ber Company for a number of years after which he retried. Mrs. Burg died in 1932. The was a member of Vernon Center Brotherhood and attended the Presbyterian Church. He leaves several nephews and nieces, including Charles A. Burg with whom he resided for several years. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Utica; Tawanka Chapter, OES of Sherrill and Oneida Ltd. Pensioneers Club. She leaves, besides her husband, a son, Carl of Rutland, Vt.; a daughter, Mrs. Ann Carlton of Des Plaines, Ill; eight grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 Saturday from the Craig W. Crowell Funeral Home here, the Rev. Arnold F. Keller, pas-tor of the Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was born in Utica, July 31,1920, a son of the late Rocco and Louisa (Vivenzo) Abiusi. He was raised and educated in Utica, attending local schools. Mr. Abiusi was a WW n Army Veteran. On November 25,1945, be was married to the former Lotti Stawiass. For many'years, be was a self-employed contractor, having worked in the Utica area for over 25 years. He was a member of St Joseph and St Patrick Church and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local No. 120. He is survived by his wife, Lotti; one daughter, Miss Louise Abiusi of Utica; two sons and daughters-in-law, Philip and Shirley Abiusi of Verona, N.Y., Andrew and Bridget Abiusi of Utica; five grandchild-en, Derrik, Amy, Jennifer, Heather and Tiffany Abiusi; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Basi of Clearwater, FL, Mrs. Grace Marchitelli, Utica and Mrs. Samuel (Josephine) Spina of Utica; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Josephine Abiusi, Utica. 31364 | Utica Herald Dispatch - 5/10/1918 Westernville. May 10.The funeral of Fred F. Shirley was held at the Presbyterian Church at 2:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. It was conducted by Baron Steuben Lodge. No. 264. F. & A. M. of Lee Center, Mr. Shirley being a member of that lodge. The Rev. 8. A. Freeman, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the church services and assisted the Masons. Robert Mid- Ian* of Rome sang 'Abide With Me" and 'God Will Take Care of You." The casket was completely sirrrounded with flowers. There were offerings from the residents of the village, the Presbyterian Church, where he was a deacon. Baron Steuhen Lodge, F. ft A. 31365 | Utica NY Daily News - 2/1945 Constableville - George J Schwenk, 80, died unexpectedly Feb 22, 1945 in the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Marion Schwenk, with whom he had lived. Dr. F. M. Ringrose, health officer, gave the cause as heart trouble. He was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Weber Schwenk and was born in Constableville, Jan 20, 1865. He never married. He was a lifelong Democrat. He served as Town Clerk of West Turin for several years. He was a member of the Port Leyden Masonic Lodge. For more than 15 years, he had assisted his brother, the late Henry Schwenk, in conductlng Schwenks hotel. The hotel is one of the old landmarks In this village. Mr. Schwenk is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clara Linck, Constableville; two brothers, Charles, Ilion, and Rudolph, Talberg, and his sister-in-law; also several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held In Mrs. Schwenks home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Frederick S. Haworth, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church will officiate. 31366 | Utica NY Daily Press A Chadwicks' teen-ager was fatally injured in a one car crash early yesterday morning on Route 69 becoming Oneida County's 43rd traffic fatality of the year and the second within 24 hoars. Alan P. Davis, 19, of 65 Oneida St. Chadwicks, died in Rome City Hospital. He suffered a broken leg and internal injuries. Thomas R. Cox, coroner, is withholding a ruling pending completion of the police investigation. After an autopsy. Cox said Davis of an internal hemorrhage. The victim's companion, Warren Peck, 18. of 159 Elm St., Chadwicks. remained in fair condition at Rome City Hospital with multiple cuts and bruises. SHERIFFS DEPUTY Donald Fey, who Investigated the 12:05 crash, is still trying to determine the car's driver. At first, both youths claimed they had been driving, Fey said. ___When first. questionedLia the hospital, Peck, in extreme pain, admitted being the driver, Fey said. Four hours later however, Peck told Fey he drove the car from Chadwicks to the U.S. Hotel in Taberg but did not remember who was driving home. Before his death at 4:45 a.m. Davis first said he was driving, then said he didn't know and later said he didn't know what car the deputy was talking about, Fey reported. The 1956 convertible was registered to Davis. Fey said the car was going east on Route 69 near the Lee Methodist Church when it skidded 342 feet down the left side of the road and crashed into a power line pole. Both youths were thrown from the car, one being hurled as far as 150 feet, Fey said. The car, which Fey said "practically disintegrated," .skidded another 100 feet along the road after smashing into the power pole. Born in Rome, Alan Davis was the son of Arthur and Thelma Beasock Davis. He had lived in Chadwicks the past 11 years and attended Chadwicks High School. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Chadwicks. He served two years in the Marines and most recently was employed in the construction field. He leaves his father of Rome; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Hallie Baldwin of Chadwicks; a brother, Arthur of Utica; a half-brother, Ronald Baldwin .of Chadwicks; two listers, Mr». Mr Boyce was employed by .his brother Bing at the Empire Milk Station in Boonville for several years. He later be- came a bridgeman for the New Central Railroad on the Utica- Albany section. Mr. Boyce was the oldest and last survivor of a family of nine children. Murphy, Oneida, died Feb 5, 1954 in Onei- da City Hospital after a two weeks illness. He was born Oct 25. 1888, In Oneida son of George and Eliza- beth Bishoff Angel, Oneida. Mr Angel was employed by the New York Central Railroad for 48 years and was a gate tender at the time he was taken ill. He was a member of the Railroad Maintenance Worken Union and of St John's Episcopal Church. He was employed on the Barge Canal at one time. Mr. Angel married the former Rebecca Mickle at the Presbyterian Manse in 1913. Surviving besides his wife and parents are a brother, Frank Angel, Syracuse, a former resident of Oneida, the two slsters, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be from the home of his parents, 240 Liberty St., at 2 today. The Rev. Roswell Williams, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, will officiate. 31382 | Utica NY Daily Press WEST LEYDEN -- Mrs. Mary Kotary Beha, 84, widow of John Beha, died May 3, 1954 in sun- set Nursing Hospital, Constable- ville. She had been in ill health for the past year and seriously ill for one week. She was born near Weat Ley- den, March 14, 1870, daughter of Joseph and Adeline Seelman Kotary. She spent nearly all her life at West Leyden and attended local schools.. She also attended St. Michael's Sisters School at Mohawk Hill. She was married to John Beha on October 1, 1888, at St. Mi- chael's Church, Mohawk Hill, by the Rev. Joseph Welant. The couple purchased the Beha home- stead farm near West Leyden and lived there until 1920. In 1923, they purchased their home in West Leyden village where they had sines lived. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on October 1, 1938. A High Mass was celebrated by the Rev. B. A. O'Connell at S t Mary's Church, West Leyden. On October 1, 1948, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home here. Mr. Beha died Feb. 8, 1952 Mrs. Beha was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, West Ley den, and a member of its Altar- Rosary Society. She was a gold star member of West Leyden Grange 620. She had held every office in th£ grange excepting master. Surviving are five sons. Ambrose L. Beha, Watervule; Henry F. Beha, Columbus, Ohio; James a. Beha, Mohawk, superintend- ent of Frankfort schools; Ray- mond G. and William J. Beha both of West Leyden; one adopt- ed daughter, Mrs. Theresa Na- bors, Seattle, Wash.; 19 grand- chidren, 35 great-grandchildren; one brother, Benjamin Kotary, Boonville; several nieces and nephews.
