For the past 11 years, he operated Herman's Barber Shop at the Beach Ridge Road address. He was a member of the Tonawanda Moose Lodge 2183, Niagara Lodge No. 375 F & AM, VFW Post 7545, American Ugion Post 1451, the Wen- delville Volunteer Fire Co. the Exempt Club of the Wen- delville Volunteer Fire Co. and was also a life member of the Western New York Volunteers Association; a member of the North Tonawanda Auxiliary Police and the Niagara County Auxiliary Police. Bates, 22, of 4354 Porter Center Road, Ransomville, who was dead on arrival at Mount St. Mary's Hospital. Injured are: Janice A. Paterson, 20, of 934 Orchard Drive, Lewistonu originally in serious condition at Mount St. Mary's. At press time, she was in critical condition. David Bates, 17, of 4364 Porter Center Road, Ransomville, originally in serious condition at Mount St. Mary's. At press time, he was in satisfactory condition. - According to State Trooper Thomas Rash, the investigating officer, the accident occurred at 2 p.m. Monday on Military Road just north of the Lewiston Pump-Generating station of the State Power Authority. The car driven by the elder Bates brother was traveling north on Military Road when it crossed into the southbound lane and collided with the car driven by Miss Paterson, state police reported. Bates was born March 26, 1949, in Niagara Falls, He was a 1969 graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School and had been working for one year as anassembler at the tonawanda plant of Chevrolet Division, General Motors Corp. . He was the son of the late August Bates and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mildred (Hildebrant) Bates; four brothers, Howard of Green Bay, Wis.; Charles of Maryville, Calif.; Ronald, serving'in the armed forces in Japan, and David Bates, at home, and one sister, Mrs, John (Carol) Puisys of Niagara Falls. 21214 | Niagara Gazette - 8/18/1934 TONAWANDA. Aug. 18.-Charles W. Rech. 74, father of Fire Chief Grover Rech. died shortly before noon today at his home, 447 Niagara street. He was born In the town of Amherst and came to Tonawanda, with his parents, when a small boy and had resided here ever since. His father, Christian Rech, opened a general store on the site now occupied by the Tonawanda city hall when the city was only a small hamlet. Mr. Rech was one of the oldest volunteer firemen in the Tonawandas. He first became a member of the Fire Department when the De- Oraff Hose company, one of the first fire companies organized here came Into existence nearly 60 years ago Later he became a charter' member of tho Niagara Hose company and In 1879 was awarded a gold medal for responding to the greatest number of fire Alarms during that year. Ho also served a.s a tax commissioner for A number of years. Ho was enticed In the grocery business And later in the wholesale and retail liquor business, retiring when prohibition came into effect in 1918. He is survived by two sons. Fred and Grover: three daughters, Mrs. O. A Warner and Mrs. Genevieve Hedegen. All of Tonawanda. and Mrs. H. M. Karcher. of Oswego; 18 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Rose, of Tonawanda. Rech, one of the best known residents of the Tonawandas, died shortly after 10 o'clock this morning at his home, 447 Niagara street. He had been in failing health for some time but it was only a few days ago that his condition became alarming. Mr. Rech was born on the Fries road, town of Amherst, - 74 years ago. He came to Tonawanda with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Rech, when a small boy and had resided here since. Tonawanda was only a small village when he and his family located here. His father opened a general store on the site of what is nowthe Tonawanda city hall. One of Oldest Volunteer Firemen. Mr. Rech was one of the oldest volunteer firemen in the Tonawandas. He was a member of the De- Graff Hose company, one of the first fire organizations promoted here. When the company was disbanded he became a charter member of the Niagara Hose company, one of the four fire units now in Tonawanda. As a volunteer fireman he won a solid gold medal in 1879 for answering the greatest number of calls for fires. As a token of esteem for his efforts as a fire fighter he was presented a solid silver trumpet, valued at $1,549. The gift was made by the late E. H. Rogers. The deep interest manifested by Mr. Rech in the fire departmenhas been perpetuated by his son C. Grover Rech, who is now chief. an office which he has held for many years. Charter Member of Elks Mr- Rech was also a charter member of North Tonawanda lodge No. 860, B.P.O.E. He also served for a number of years as tax col lector when Tonawanda was a vii lage. He was engaged in the grocery business and later as a wholesale and retail liquor dealer. When prohibition went into effect he es tablished the bakery which is nowoperated by his son, Fred, and Paul Scheetz under the name of Rech & Scheetz, and retired from bust ness. Besides two sons, Fred and Gro ver, three daughter, Mrs. C. A, Warner. Mrs- Genevieve Hedegen, all of Tonawanda, and Mrs. H. M. Karcher, Oswego: 16 grandchildreli and one sister. The bride was given in marriage by her father, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church before an altar banked with white gladioli. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Klail, Troy avenue, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Harder, Ward road, North Tonawanda. Fashioned of white rosepoint lact, the bridal gown was made with a fitted bodice and a mandarin collar. The bouffant skirt of scalloped edge lace exposed a double flounce of tulle which extended into a chapel-length train of lace, converging to a point, over a double tulle flounce over satin. The gown was adorned with sequins, rhinestoncs and pearls around the decolletage and bordering .the hemline. she wore black accessories. Both mothers wore corsages of yellow roses and blue pompons. Mr. Ray Brock was best man and Mr. Arthur Wendler, cousin of the bridegroom, and Mr. Richard Klail, brother of the bride, seated the guests. A blue lace dress with gold accessories w as the choice of the mother of the bride. The mother of the bridegroom selected a rose colored dress of lace with which she wore black accessories. 21241 | Niagara Gazette - 8/19/1965 Joseph William Goater, 56, of 446 81st St., a veteran of 24 years on the Niagara Falls Police Department, was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital today (Aug. 19, 1965) after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home. A fire department rescue squad administered oxygen for 15 minutes in an attempt to revive him. Mr. Goater joined the police force May 1, 1941. He served as a patrolman throughout his almost a quarter-century span of service. Before being named to the department, he was employed at the city's sewage disposal plant. Mr. Goater was a native of Niagara Falls. He was a 25- year member of t h e Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Niagara Falls Police Club and an elder at Riverside Presbyterian Church. He was also an active member of the Handbell Society of the church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Goater; a son, Kenneth Goater, at home; three brothers. Thomas E. and Police Lt. Harry C. Goater, both of Niagara Falls, and Albert G. Goater. Pompano Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Mrs. Loz- zilaire (Amy) Johnson, Niagara Falls. 21249 | Niagara Gazette - 8/1958 MIDDLEPORT Mrs. Florence E. Eggert, 69, Town Line Rd., died Tuesday (August 12, 1958) in Roswell Park Memorial Hospital, Buffalo, after a lengthy illness. She was born in North Tonawanda in 1889, the daughter of the late August Maerten and Louise Crull Maerten. She had resided in Middleport for the last nine years, and was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Middleport. She is survived by her husband, Lester H. W. Eggert; three sons, James and Donald Eggert of Middleport, and Edmund Eggert of Barker; two daughters, Mrs. Luther Wells of Shelby and Mrs. Raymond Martin of, Lockport; three brothers, Theodore and Harold Maerten of Tonawanda and Phillip Merten of Sanborn, and seven grandchildren. Friends may call Thursday and Friday from 3 to. 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. at the Wallace and Heath .Funeral Home, where services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Otto J. Strothmann.
