Fitch, who died in 1979. Mrs. Fitch was born July 21, 1901 in Akron, the daughter of George and Ella (Kuhn) Harrington. She had lived in Medina since 1976, before that in Middleport, and before that in Barker for several years where she owned and operated a grocery store with her husband. She was an arts and craft teacher for Barker Central School Adult Program teaching caning, crafts and painting She was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Wolcottsville, the Lutheran Women Missionary League and was a member and past president of Wolcottsville Golden Agers. She was mother of Mrs. Leslie (Marion) Sharpsteen of Miami, Fla., Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Jago of Wolcottsville, the Rev. Dr. LaVerne Fitch of Smithville, Texas and the late Geard (sp.) Fitch; sister of Lloyd Harrington of Niagara Falls, Wilferd (sp.) Harrington of Appleton, George Harrington Jr. of Lockport, and the late Ruth Linderman and Beatrice Holzman. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren 10 foster sons and several nieces and nephews. He was the operator of the Matthew Construction Co. of Escalon and had been on the CBK contract two weeks. Survivors are his widow, Rachel; five children, Keven, Angela, Lesea, Brian and Steven, all of Modesto; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mathew of Indiana; four brothers, Jerry, Charles, Ernie and Richard, all of Indiana, and two sisters, Donna May Mathew of Texas and Rose Mary McAllister of Indiana. Born in Cambria, she moved to Lewiston after her marriage to the late Herman J. Lindhurst. She assisted her husband in managing fruit farms for the J.W.H. Kelly Farms for 40 years until the farm was sold. In the Tri-County News, a Lockport area newpaper (sic), in January 1986, she reminisced: "Saturday was chicken day," Mrs. Lindhurst said. "I always prepared four for the Kelly's Sunday dinner and two for our family. The peaches were graded by another crew of workers, and then loaded in Lewiston and shipped green as grass to Pittsburgh. We had lots of hobos, and I never refused them something to eat." She and her husband moved to Ransomville after retiring in 1951. They lived there for 15 years until her husband's death in 1965, when she moved back to Cambria. Mrs. Lindhurst was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church at North Ridge, where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was also a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She is survived by a son, Arnold Lindhurst of Lewiston; a daughter, Marion Schendel of Cambria; and five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Williams on February 25, 1967. Sharon enjoyed playing the accordion, spending time with her favorite cousin, Darlene, horseback riding and delivering her Avon on horseback, doing leather work, reading, ceramics and spending time with her family. Sharon is survived by her husband, Richard G. Williams; her son, Michael J. Williams; two grandsons, Matthew J. Williams and Andrew J. Williams; one sister, Beverly J. Malinoski, 87, owner-operator for Big Ed's Fishing Camp, where he worked for 30 years, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie, Pa. He was born Nov. 25, 1921, in Middleport, N.Y., the son of the late John L. and Mildred E. (Duwe) Malinoski. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II, enlisted on May 13, 1942, at Buffalo, N.Y., and was discharged on May 12, 1945, at Brooklyn, N.Y. After serving in the Coast Guard, he worked at Brock Publishing for a period of time. He was also head custodian for Cattaraugus Central School for many years. Ed was a member of the Cattaraugus Fire Department and Ambulance Squad, American Legion of Little Valley and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mayville. He served as mayor of the village of Cattaraugus, also the village board, and justice of the peace for many years. He is survived by a son, Thomas E. (Jean) Malinoski of Forestville, N.Y.; a daughter, Kathleen A. (James) Southworth of Cattaraugus, N.Y.; a grandson, Edward J. (Emily) Southworth of Ellery Center, N.Y.; three granddaughters: Erin M. (George) Haffenden of East Aurora, N.Y., Jennifer L. (Sean) Burke of Tampa, Fla., and Suzanna Borst of Astoria, N.Y.; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Francis J. Malinoski of Mayville, N.Y; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse, Eilleen Rose Corrigan Malioski, whom he married in Miami, Fla., on Dec. 24, 1944. | 30970 | The Remington Press Fri, 10 June 1955, pg. 1, col. 2 THe Wilbur Norwoods Die In Auto Crash Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Norwood of Lacon, Illinois, met death suddenly on Sunday, June 5, 1955, near Dwight, Illinois, when the car in which they were returning from Chicago collided head-on with a car driven by Frank Sobotta, was also killed. Wilbur was married in February of 1955 to his wife Clara. He, together with John English, established a pruduce business in Lacon. While in Remington, he was enployed for eleven years by the Remington Produce Company, then owned by Ruth Tribby. Later he was associated with the R. and N. produce before entering the Navy. He was a member of the 1929 Remington High School graduating class. Following his relase from the Navy, he moved to Lacon where he he has resided continuously. He is survived by his father, Sam Norwood, who is chief maintanece man at Crawford hospital, a son, Dean, and two grandchildren of Lacon. Also, three sisters, Mrs. Bernard Hicks, Remington, Mrs. Victor English, Wolcott, Mrs. Ora Alvis, Columbus and one brother, Harold, of Valparaiso. Funeral services for Mr. Norwood were conducted from the Howard funeral home on Wednesday at 2:00 with Reverand O.R. Mason officiating. | 30973 | The Rev. Dr. John Henry Fred Kuder, first bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Papua New Guinea, knew early on he wanted to devote his life to the ministry. Born on October 6, 1906, in Niagara Falls, New York, he was the eldest of three children. After completing one year of high school, John Kuder enrolled at Martin Luther College and Seminary, Buffalo, New York, which was the seminary of the Lutheran Synod of Buffalo. On August 5, 1928, the Lutheran Synod of Buffalo ordained him. He received and accepted a call to serve the parish of First St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hanover, Ontario. He served there until 1934. Rev. Kuder became interested in serving as an American Lutheran Church (ALC) missionary after hearing an appeal from the church for persons to volunteer to serve in its New Guinea mission field. Rev. Kuder was commissioned an ALC missionary to New Guinea on February 18, 1934, and he and Mrs. Kuder began their term in New Guinea on May 17, 1934. The Kuders served in New Guinea until World War II started. Mrs. Kuder and the children returned to the States in May 1941, but Rev. Kuder stayed on ministering to those living in the Highlands area of New Guinea. He stayed until 1943 and then returned to the States. In 1946, missionaries returned to the field and Rev. Kuder was placed in charge of mission operations. In 1953, mission operations of Germany, Canada, Australia, and the United States merged into one organization, the Lutheran Mission New Guinea (LMNG). Rev. Kuder served as its first president. The ALC and two of its educational institutions chose to honor Rev. Kuder and his work first in 1952 when Wartburg Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, granted Rev. Kuder an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree and again in 1979 when The American Lutheran Church (TALC) gave $350,000 to Trinity Lutheran Seminary to endow the John H.F. He served for 22 yrs. in Leland, WI and has been at Loyal since 1955. Pastor Pfohl was born in Walmore, NY.., on March 24, 1904. He received his education at Martin Luther Seminary, Buffalo, Erie County, NY.., and was ordained on June 24, 1928. He served parishes in Random Lake, Leland, Westfield, and Loyal, all in Wisconsin. . Kent, 824 South Clinton St. Mrs. Kent is a sister of Mrs. Vogelmann, the former Florence Hathaway. The Rev. Mr. Vogelmann served as chaplain for two years of Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee prior to his illness. He had held pastorates at St, John's United Church of Chris, Elmore, Ohio; Emmanuel Church, Shaker Heights, 20 years; and St. Stephen's Church, Merrill, Wis., 10 years, before becoming chaplain of the hospitial. He was a graduate of Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Ill., attended Western Reserve university and studies classical German in Germany. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Janke and Julie, at home; and three sons, David, Wheaton, Ill. and Tom and Stephen at home. She could pick up the phone and summon Bob Hope to a March of Dimes fund-raiser or Joe Namath to her daughter's graduation. Enjoy a bridge game with the master, Charles Goren. Or have a chat with Hillary Rodham Clinton. After all, since 1960 when she remarried, she had only to say, "This is Mrs. Elliott Roosevelt calling . . ." Mrs. Roosevelt was a lover of the limelight even before she became the daughter-in-law of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. "She was quite an Auntie Mame," said her sister Lee Evoy of Medina. "She had energy that wouldn't stop and was a rebel all her life. In fact, she was held back a grade at Forest Ridge for her antics." In spite of the trouble she gave the Seattle Catholic school's nuns, Mrs. Roosevelt graduated in 1940. When her father insisted his girls partake in the war effort, she became a messenger at Boeing. "If you could have seen her zipping around on a motor scooter!" said her sister. "It suited her." Mrs. Roosevelt married Milton Whitehead in 1941. When he was sent overseas, she worked in an exclusive, Seattle dress shop. Later, she and a friend published the Seattle Blue Book - a social register that "stepped on quite a few toes," according to her sister. An accomplished horsewoman, Mrs. Roosevelt also flouted convention - and the law - by driving a pony cart down Fifth Avenue to publicize her Children's Orthopedic Hospital Benefit Horse Show. After her first marriage ended, she entered the real-estate business and moved to Phoenix, where she married Roosevelt. They enjoyed the social whirl of Portugal, England and Miami Beach before settling in Bellevue from 1977 to 1983. She later moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., where she died. "She was just very, very artistic and could sew and decorate, and do all those things my sister and I could never do," said her sister Nina O'Neil of Everett. "She was never afraid to speak her mind." Gretchen Roosevelt of Seattle said her mother taught her and her brothers to stand up and state their case: "But I don't think any of her children were as gutsy as she was. She had a real `can-do' attitude." Other survivors include her sons David Roosevelt, of Seattle, Ford Roosevelt, Van Nuys, Calif., and James Roosevelt, Hollywood, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four stepchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. | 30978 | The Tonawanda Evening News, Dec 21, 1914 August Kumm Ill Long Time Civil War Veteran Passes Away at Age of Seventy Three. SAW SOME HARD FIGHTING His Regiment, Which Was in the Army of the Gulf, Participated in Several Notable Battles Wounded Twice and Taken Prisoner Once. August Krumm, seventy-three years old, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Jacobs of No. 38 Seymour street, last night, following a lingering illness. Mr. Krumm was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Company K, 91st Regiment, Volunteer Infantry, at Albany on December 6, 1851. He retaliated in the same company and regiment at Brashier City, La., 06 January 1, 1864, serving until honorably discharged at the close of the war. He was taken prisoner by the Confederates at Pensacola, Fla., and removed to Vicksburg, Miss., where he was imprisoned for two months and twenty-three days. At the expiration of that time he was placed on parole and succeeded in getting back to his regiment. Among the notable battles of the Rebellion in which Mr. Kumm participated were those at White Oak Ridge, Five Forks, Petersburg, Appamattox Court House, Lexersburg and Donaldsville. His regiment was a part of the Army of the Gulf and most of its battles were in the enemy's territory. Twice during the war Mr. Kumm was wounded, once in the arm and the other time in the leg. Mr. Kumm was born in Germany. He came to America when eighteen years old. During the last twenty eight years of his life he had made his home in North Tonawanda with the exception of a few months of 1914 when he and his wife lived at LaSalle. The deceased was a member of Payne Post, G.A.R. Besides his wife Mr. Kumm is survived by six sons: August Kumm of Niagara Falls, Gustave Kumm of North Tonawanda, Frank Kumm of Stillwater, Minn.; Albert Kumm of Hibbing, Minn.. Theodore and Fred Kumm of LaSalle and two daughters, Mrs. George Fisher of LaSalle and Mrs. Jacobs. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the house, Rev. F. A. Gentzke, who died in 1997; and was the grandmother of the late Richard Gentzke of Indianapolis, IN. Anna had formerly been employed at Valis Ice Cream Luncheonette and Remington Rand, both in North Tonawanda, Dr. George Nussbaum Dental office in Tonawanda, and Creations on China. Anna also hand-painted china portraits and flower designs since the late 1970’s and was a member of the Great Lakes China Painters Assn. for many years, and will be a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York State World Organization of China Painters. She was also a member of Sirius Chapter 301 OES. She is survived by four children, Frank S. (Audrey) Gentzke of Indianapolis, IN, Nancy E. (Kenneth) Schifferle of Williamsville, Kenneth L. She was born and raised in North Tonawanda, where she went to school and graduated from North Tonawanda High School. Lauraine was a member of the Pendleton Historical Society and Wendelville Senior Citizens. She was a very active member of the Pendleton Senior Citizens where Lauraine was president for many years and the Wendelville Ladies Auxiliary where she was a member for 51 years and held the office of President, Vice President, and Secretary. Lauraine loved working with her family operating Aunt Tillies Candies, in North Tonawanda for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, being with grandchildren, Wendelville Field Days, and going out to places with her friends. Lauraine was the mother of David (Ann) Moje, Randy Moje, Paul (Kathleen) Moje, all of Pendleton and Cheryl (David) Wright of Lockport; sweetheart grandmother of Jennifer (Peter) Chenier, Matthew, Joshua, Zachery, and Andrew Moje, Brooke and Brittany Wright, also the late Elizabeth; great-grandmother to Christopher Chenier. He had also worked as City Market Clerk for seven years, where he applied for and received permission to participate in NY State WIC program.
