31606 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/1/1949 Constableville-John W. Wynn, 86, died Jan. 31, 1949, in Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville. He had been in ill health for about three months and seriously ill for 11 days. Mr. Wynn was born July 26, 1862 in Wales, a son of William and Mary Pritchard Wynn. He married May Clark in Whitesboro in 1904. His wife died May 17, 1938. Mr. Wynn was a member of the Methodist Church here. He had been engaged in farming in this section all his life. Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Marion Schwenk, Constableville, and Mrs. Dorothy Ainsworth, Con- stableville, and a nephew, Richard Wynn, Constableville, and several great nieces. The funeral will be from the Trainor Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. George Stockdale, pastor of the Turin and Constableville Methodist Churches, will officiate. 31607 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/10/1936 George L Barber, 69, former well known Utica wrestler and drum major, died Saturday, Feb. 8, 1936, at the home of his son, George S. Barber, 1108 Kossuth Avenue. He was born in this city In February, 1867, and attended the public schools. He learned the trade of a painter with his father, who had a shop first on Charlotte Street and later in the Eighth Ward. Mr. Barber followed the painter's trade up' to 1910. For several years he had had the privilege for the sale of certain articles at the Utica baseball grounds. , Mr. Barber waa a charter member of the Painters and Decorators' Union, which was founded in 1887 a n d h e served It as treasurer for some .years. He was also well known in military circles. He was for 20 years a member of the Nntlonal Guard, serving first in the 24th and later in the 28th Separate Company. He w a s armorer for this company when it had its headquarters on Bleecker Street and later in the new armory on Steuben Park. He succeeded Alonso F. Miller as drum major of the old Utica Band and he also served in the drum major corps of the 28th Separate Company. Mr. Barber waa a man of strong physique and commanding presence and had more than a Ideal reputation as an athlete. His specialty was wrestling and in this he figured In professional circles for 15 or 20 years. He had wrestled all over this and other states and a m o n g . t h e men whom" he had met and defeated were Marvin Thompson, Professor Dwyer, George Dyke. Harry Parker, Douglas E. Ross, James Parr, the English champion, and Gotch when he wrestled in the Utica armory. Mr. Barber attended - Bethany Presbyterian Church. Surviving are his widow; three sons, George S.. Harold W. and Walter E.. Barber; a daughter, Mrs. L. M. Benjamin; one sister. Born in Apriola, Provnce of Potenza Italy, he was a son of Antonio and Rosa Ribo- iot Pricola. He married Maria Giusep- pa in Italy when he was 24 years old. Mr. Pricola came to this country and to Pensylvania in 1900. n 105 he moved to Utica where he had since re- sided. Mrs. Pricola ied Jan. 26,, 1944. Mr. Pricola was employed for many years by various local building con- tractors and ladscapers, re- tiring in 1937. He was a com- muicant in St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church and belonged to the Avanti Savoia Society. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Joseph A. Bono of Utica; three granddaughters, the Misses Susa Anne, Barbara Jo, and Lorraine Maria Bono, all in Utica; sevveral nieces and nephews in Utica and Chicago. The funeeral will be at 8:45 Thursday from the Matt Fu- neral Home and at 9:15 from St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church where a solemn requiem high Mass will be of- fered. Burial will be in Cal- vary Cemetery. Members of the Avantia Savoia Society will meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 tomorrow to pay respect. He was a member of the Prebsyterian Church and of Remington Rand's 25-Year Club. Besides his wife, he leaves a brother, Arthur; a grand- daughter, Mrs. Audrey Soren- son and a grandson, William Slocum, all of Ilion; five great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 31615 | Utica NY Daily Press - 2/27/1925 Ava, February 25-Mrs. Martha Haynes, 65, wife of C. H. Barringer, died at her home about one mile west of this village Monday, Febru- ary 12. Mrs. Barringer had not been in the best of health for some time and during the last few days she failed rapidly. Her death came as a shock to a wife circle of friends. For over 20 years her work as a nurse had brought her in close con- tact with the people throughout this region. Mrs. barringer was never too busy to lend a helping hand to others during those in sickness or trouble, and there are many who have good reason to re- member some act of kindness prompted by a rare thoughtfulness of others, which was one of her strongest characteristics. She was an attendant of the M. E. Church and also a member of the Ava Home Bureau. Mrs. barringer was the daughter of the late Archibald M. and Mary Logal Haynes, and was born in the town of Western, June 8, 1859. January 15, 1878, she was mar- ried to C. H. Barringer, who sur- vives. For 12 years the family has re- sided in Ava. Beside her husband there survive one son, Seymour Barringer of Ava; two daughters, Mrs. Newton Tiffany of Boonville and Mrs. B. S. Hurl- burt, Ava; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Julian Haynes, Eulalville; one sister, Mrs. margaret Noyes, Oneida; one half sister, Mrs. Mary Gilbert, Cape Vincent; three half brothers, Henry Haynes, North Western, Frank Haynes, Water- town, and Wyman Haynes, Herki mer. Republican, supervisor of the town of Vienna, Lenox County, on the north shore of Oneida Lake, died suddenly at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home here, following an illness of over a year's duration.. Mr. Annis was born in Redfield. Oswego County. March 16, 1855. He lived there until he was six years old, when he moved with his parents to North Bay, Oneida County, on Oneida Lake and there he has lived since. He was educated in the district school and as a young man he learned the trade of boat builder. His life work was building boats In the winter time and boating on the Erie Canal dur- ing the season of navigation. He was engaged in boat building for about 30 years and during that time be built in all about 40 boats. He employed a goodly number of men and spent thouaaads of dollars in the town. He was engaged In boating for 47 year*. having at different times from one to four boats in operation. For years he carried salt from Syracuse to New York, but for the greatest part of the time he carried grain and lumber from Buffalo or Tonawada to New York. In March 1917 he re- tired from business. Republican in Politics Mr. Annis was Republican In poli- tics and stood well in the councils of his party. He represented the town of Vienna in the Board of Supervlsors In 1896-98 and served In the 1920- 21 term on the committees of charities and correction, soldiers and sail- ors, county lands and highway ac- counts. He was for three winters a doorkeeper In the Assembly. 1896-00 legislature. Mr. Annis was one of the oldest members of Vienna Lodge 440, F & A. M. which he had served as master. He was one of the leading business men of the town of Vienna and was held in the highest esteem by all. He had a wife acquaintance throughout the county and was popu- lar with the members of the Board of Supervisors. Mr. Annis married Miss Mertie Au- chard, who is living. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Edith Wells of North Bay and Mrs. Ola Campbell of Oneida, and one brother, Atwell Annis of North Bay. She was a member of St Anne's Church, the Ladies of St. Anne's and sang in its Senior Choir. She was also member of the Heenan Spiritual Group for the Handicapped and was a volunteer Red Cross worker. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ann M. and Richard B. Hineline, Whitesboro; a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel J. and Judith Cravotta, Glens Falls, NY; five grandildren; three sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Cecelia) Roldon, Vista, NJ, Mrs. Walter (Dorothy) Dunn, Oneida, NY and Mrs. David (Bertha) Rowley, Waterville; three brothers, John Beha, Ontario, NY, Donald A. Beha, Utica and Joseph Beha, Waterville. She had been in ill health since last June and seriously ill since September. She was born April 18, 1881 in Town of West Turia, daugh- ter of Thomas and Elizabeth Davis Wynn. She was educated at the Constableville Union Free School. She was married to Henry W. Schwenk on Jan. 11, 1905, in this village. He died April 21, 1921. The couple lived at the Schwenk Brothers Hotel (now the Hotel Parquet) here, which they operated until 1821. She was a life resident of the Constableville vicinity and was a member of St. Paul's Episco- pal Church, its Women's Aux- iliary, and St. Agnes Guild. She was a long-time member of the local Home Demonstration Unit. Mrs. Schwenk served as treasurer of the Constableville Central School for the past 36 years. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Henry Taylor of Constable- ville, Mrs. Sidney Johnson of Sauquoit, Mrs. Leo Northam of Constanbleville; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister, mrs. 31623 | Utica NY Daily Press - 3/21/1970 Rocco Basi, 59, formerly of 1216 Leeds St., the man who helped make Utica's traffic °'stop and go," died March 18 in. Clearwater Hospital, Clearwater. Fla. He moved to 815 Embassy Park, Clearwater, two months ago. Mr. Basi was superintendent of traffic signal maintenance for Utica's police and fire departments, retiring in 1968. He joined the Utica police force in 1939 and served in prowl cars and "on the beat" before joining~the late~~Capt. Samuel Martucci in establishing the Traffic Division. Together, ,they took over the installation and maintenance of Utica's traffic control equipment. As the division grew, Mr. Basi's responsibilities encompassed the supervision of linesmen and maintenance of miles of overhead and underground wires and cables. His advice in solving traffic problems was sought by community leaders and Traffic Inspector Paul Carl. Interested in reducing accidents, he changed traffic light cycles ,when needed, thus facilitating traffic flow. A native Utican, Mr. Basi was the son of the late Bartholomew Basi and Angeline Pecorello Basi. He received his education in Utica and Italy, and at one time was employed by the Hotel Uti- ca. Mr. Basi was married to Doro- thy Marie Abiusi in Utica. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Utica Po- lice Department, and John E. Creedon Benevolent Association and St. Mary of Mt. Mrs. Uebele had been in the. -hotel-restaurant business since 1933. She operated the Leanto in New Hartford and the Cottage Hotel in West Winfield before acquiring the Boonville Hotel in 1939. She has been actively engaged in its operation since. She was a member of the Boonville Methodist Church, Grace Chapter of OES in Clinton, the Love American Legion Post Auxiliary and was a past president of the State Liquor Dealers Association She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Harold (Marline) Mahaffy, Boonville; a son, Lawrence H . Miss Wohler. a 1971 graduate of the Dion Central High School, died early yesterday when she was thrown from her car in the Dion Gorge and then pinned under the vehicle in Steele Creek which flows through the gorge. According to East Herkimer State Police, the accident occurred at 1 yesterday while Miss Wohler was driving north on Route 51 through the gorge. She lost control on a curve and the car struck a tree. Miss Wohler was ejected at this point, troopers, said. and landed in the creek. The car continued on into the creek, pinning her underneath. A coroner attributed death due to drowning. Thomas Jacquays, 25, of 340 Otsego St., a passenger, suf- fered a possible broken left wrist and said he would see his own physician. Miss Wohler was born in Ilion, daughter of Gerald and Helen Preston Wohler. She was a prac- tical nursing student in the Her- kimer County Board of Coopera- tive Educational Services Pro- gram. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was a past pressident of the methodist Youth Fellowship. The bridde wore a gown of white Spanish lace over white satin with finger tip veil fashened to a lace cap in halo effect and carried white roses. Her maid of honor was gowned in heaven blue mar- quisette and wore a tiara of blue flowers to wich a short veil was fashened. Her bouquet was of pink roses. Mrs. Doyle's gown was of blue crepe, with accessories of a darker hue, and corsage of pink roses. The bridegroom's mother wore lavender crepe with matching hat and a corsage of yellow roses. Following the ceremony, the young couple left by motor for Washington, D. C. and other pooints of interest.
