He was bom in Utica, N.Y., August 1,1919, son of Vincent and Mary LaPorte Tropea, was educated in local schools, and he was a graduate of Utica College. On May 11, 1946, Joseph married the former Theresa Brindisi. Mr. Tropea was employed as a Logistics Specialist in the Electronics Systems Division for the Fwktal GovertuBeat- at Grifnss Air Force Base and Hanscom Field, Bedford, Mass., for over 30 years, retiring in 1974. During World War U. Joseph served in the U.S. Army and received citations for his involvement in the European Theater. He was a treasurer of the Twenty-five Club, and was an avid Bocce Player at the Sons of Italy. He was a communicant of St Agnes Church. He is survived by his beloved wife and mother, his two sons, Vincent and his wife, Theresa, Gary and his friend. Patricia Surace, all of Utica; three grandchildren, Ginny. ALSO North Tonawanda NY Evening News - 8/17/1938 Believed to have been the victim of a heart attack, Benjamin Achterberg, 23 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs, Charles Achterberg, Tonawanda Creek road, town of Amherst, sank in the Barge Canal while swimming with a number of other young people at Pickard's Bridge early last evening. The body was recovered IS minutes later by members of the North Amherst Fire company, of which the youth was a member. An inhilator was Used by the First Aid squad. of the Eggertsville Fire company in an unsuccessful attempt to restore him. Physicians said that no water was found in the man's lungs, giving rise to the belief that he was the victim of a heart attack. Not Expert Swimmer Achterberg was not an expert swimmer,..He had been swimming with other youths of Pickard's Bridge in the canal all Summer and was considered able to hand- le himself fairly well in the aquatic sport. The point where he went down was less than 1,00 feet from the Achterberg home and only a short distance east of the bridge over the canal in the small settlement. Ria Survivors Besides his parents the youth is survived by two brothers, Leonard and Maynard, at home, and two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Dexheimer, town of Wheatfield, and Lorna, at home. Medical examiner Charles E Long was called. The body was removed to Hamp's morgue or Adam street. Dr. Long has not issued a certificate of death. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence and at 2;30 o'clock at the St. Paul's church in Martinsville the Rev. F. A. He was born May 12, 1887, in Utica, a son of Christopher and Elizabeth Vaeth. He was educated in St. Mary's School and the Utica public schools. In 1909 ha married Theresa M. McNulty in St John's Church, Utica. She died Jan. 25, 1936. Mr. Vaeth was a photo engraver and printer. He was employed for 48 years at the Mohawk Engraving Company. He retired in March, 1957. He was a member of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. He was a charter member of the Photo Engravers Union. He leaves a son, Robert G. 31684 | Utica NY Herald Dispatch Boonville. Aug. 4.-Ira Briggs, aged 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Briggs of Boonville. was drowned here shortly before noon to-day. He was in swimming; in the Black River Canal in what Is known as the Kent bridge. about a mile south of the village.The boy and several companions were In swimming about 11:10 o'clock this morning*. It Is believed young Briggs was seised with cramps, as he could swim fairly welt. The water was about six feet deep where he was drowned. The other boys saw him floundering In the water less than 30 feet from shore and they pushed a long pole t o htm He appeared dased and unable to understand that they were trying to aid him. The body had not been recovered early -this afternoon. Coroner Haberer Is in charge. Besides his parents the boy Is sur- vived by several brothers and sisters. Levee. aged 56 . of 73 South street, died suddenly yesterday afternoon during the rain storm. and it is believed that fright led to her death. Mrs. Levee had all her life been very much afraid of lightning and it was her custom when a alarm came up to shut herself in a small pantry- Yesterday afternoon she saw a flash of lightning and with a scream ran to the pantry. A few moments later she called for help and when the door was opened she was found lying on the door groaning. Her son. George, carried his mother to a couch, threw some water In her face and summoned Dr. Falrbank. but Mrs. Levee was dead when the physician arrived. It is supposed that fright and the heat affected her heart. She bad been in poor health for some time. No inquest will be held. Mrs Levee was born in Little Falls December 9. 1853. And her maiden name was Marian Angel. In 1872. she married Mr. Levee. For a tlme they lived in Oneida. For the last 20 years she had resided In Utica. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and possessed a wide circle of friends. In addition to her husband she is survived by one son. George: one daughter. Mrs. Mabel Steele, both of Utlca; one sister. Mrs. William Jones of Clint o n : three brothers. Henry. Zenith and Willis Angel all of Oneida; a father. George F. She was born in Rome, September 1, 1889 a daughter of George and Alice Potter Bowman. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1907 and came to Utica that same year. She entered the School of Nursing in Faxton Hospital and graduated from there in the Class of 1910. In 1912 she was married to William T. Kellmurray, who died in 1937. After her husband's death she returned to nursing at Faxton Hospital and started the first Central Supply Room there and was in charge of that until she retired in 1963. Mrs. Kellmurray was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Faxton Hospital Alumni. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Alice) Luke of New Hartford; one sister, Mrs. K. Irene Nelson Of New- Hartford; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Jean) Relnwald of Hamilton died in 1971.
