Walter was a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda and retired from the City of North Tonawanda's Wastewater Treatment Plant in 1993 after 25 years of service. He was a World War 2 veteran having enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he was just 17 years old. He served aboard the USS Thurston in the South Pacific during the key battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Walter's passion and pride was his wife and family. He enjoyed camping, hunting, tending his backyard garden and cheering on the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. He was a life-long resident of this city and a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mr. Fritz, a World War I Army veteran, was a member of Stephen Sikora Post 1522 American Legion, the Rescue Fire Company, the Firemen's Benevolent Association and the New York State Retirement Association. | 31953 | Walter J. Bos, 74, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18th, 2018 at Kenmore Mercy Hospital. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late Joseph M. and Margaret (Ryan) Bos. Walter attended local schools and graduated from Bishop Duffy High School. He married his beloved wife, Carol A. (Farbo) Bos on April 4, 1964 at the former Our Lady of Rosary Church. Mr. Bos worked over 35 years in the retail industry including 12 years with the Peter J. Schmidt Wholesale Company where he achieved the level of Vice President of Operations. He was also a local professional wrestler, wrestling under the names as the “Executioner,” the “Crusher” and the “Polish Peacock.” In his leisure time, he enjoyed reading, attending his children and grandchildren’s school and sporting events, playing Words with Friends, cheering on his favorite professional sports teams and collecting Michael Jordan paraphernalia. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his loving family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Mr. Bos is survived by his children, Christopher (Amy) Bos, Kevin (Diane) Bos, Lisa Marie Bos; grandchildren, Peter, Brandi, Caitlyn and Danielle. | 31955 | Walter J. Wiatr, Jr. passed away on Friday, July 29, 2016 at his home while under the care of his loving family and Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls on May 28, 1940, the son of the late Walter and Sophie (Ciesielski) Wiatr, Sr. Mr. Wiatr attended local schools and worked for the New York Central Railroad for 16 years. He then worked as an inspector at Harrison Radiator for 37 years and retired in 1999. On July 7, 1962 he was married to the former Dorothy Trzeciak at Holy Trinity Church. He was a great outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and walking Hyde Park Golf Course. He enjoyed going to the casino, horse racing and was an avid Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan. Mr. Wiatr especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter and was a helpful friend to all his neighbors. Mr. Wiatr is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy (Trzeciak) Wiatr; his children, Thomas (Diane) Wiatr of Niagara Falls, David (Anita) Wiatr of Las Vegas, NV, Kathleen (Mark) Becker of Niagara Falls and Michelle (Joseph) Holody of Erie, PA; his grandchildren, Michelle, David, Julia and Mary; great-granddaughter, Isabella; 7 step-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Walter was a graduate of Buffalo State College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in computer science. He served in the United States Air Force, from 2002-2008. Walter was employed at Tops, on Grand Island, and presently at Walmart, in Niagara Falls. He enjoyed computers, gaming, hockey, and refereed children's hockey, when he lived in Florida. | 31957 | Walter L. Ganshaw, age 88, of Wilson, entered into rest on Friday, February 12, 2010 in the family homestead on the Cambria-Wilson Road, Wilson. Born on Sept. 7, 1921, he was the son of the late Herman and Rose (Koeppen) Ganshaw and the 10th in their family of 12 children. Walter graduated from Wilson High School in 1938. When he joined the 4-H in its second year at the Wilson District 13 Schoolhouse, he had no idea it would afford him the opportunity to attend college. A $150 scholarship won by Walt for his 4-H record of achievement proved to be one of the most important events in his life. The scholarship not only prompted him to go to Cornell University in Ithaca, but also resulted in his career and passion as a 4-H executive dedicated to 4-H youth work. Once at college, he worked his way through by serving as a counterman in a cafeteria. He spent summers working as an assistant in the 4-H and on the family farm. In 1966, Walt was one of six 4-H Agents in the U.S. to receive a National "Distinguished Service Award." He was recognized for developing one of the state's outstanding county programs and his special efforts to grow the 4-H program in urban centers. Walt earned a Master's Degree from Michigan State University. Later in life, he enjoyed a second career at his friend, Don Luff's greenhouses.Walt was a lifelong member of North Ridge United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Wilson Conservation Club. He also enjoyed membership in the Wilson Fire Company, the Wilson Historical Society, American Legion Post #531, and the Bargemen Barbershop Quartet. Walt's green thumb was evident in his lush gardens. He made weekly trips to the Clinton-Bailey Market in Buffalo to sell his produce through 2002. Walt's love of the outdoors literally proceeded him. He traveled in his pickup truck, the "Southern Tier Express," always looking forward to the next trip down the 219 and to his beloved hunting cabin. He celebrated patriotism. He enjoyed most sports (except the Yankees), fishing trips to the French River in Canada, bird watching, cooking and spending time with loved ones. Walter is survived by his brother, William Ganshaw of Cape Cod, MA and two sisters-in-law, Jackie and Elaine Ganshaw. Nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by six brothers, Fred, Herman, John, Harold, Ernest and Kelly; and four sisters, Anabell Freatman, Bertha Burns, Florence Jacobs and Lorena McDonough. | 31959 | Walter R. Hartman, Sr., just had celebrated his 95th birthday, passed away, unexpectedly, on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at his residence. Born on March 3, 1920, in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Emily (Hooper) Hartman. Mr. Hartman was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY and attended local schools. Walter proudly served in the Merchant Marines, during World War II and was honorably discharged on August 15, 1945. On March 18, 1945, Walter married the former Marilyn Martin. For 43 years, he was employed by Union Carbide, until his re-tirement in 1982. Mr. Hartman was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Walter loved to walk. In addition to his beloved wife of 70 years on March 18th, Mr. Hartman is survived by one son, Walter R. (Carolee) Hartman, Jr. of Colorado; one grand-daughter, Emily Hartman of Utah; one adopted grandson, David Winters; one sister, Joann (William) Fearn of North Tonawanda, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Nanticoke, PA, he was the son of the late Walter and Mary (Lotnik) Hyla; and the beloved husband of the late Frances (Fitt) Hyla. Walter moved to Niagara Falls in 1951 and earned his Associate’s degree in Mechanical Technology from Erie County Community College. On April 22, 1953. He enlisted in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1955. Walter was employed by the Niagara Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant for over 27 years as an Instrument Technician. He was a devout Catholic and parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Church, as well as their senior group. Walter was also a longtime member of the American Legion Portage Post 1465 and several local pinochle clubs throughout Lewiston, NY and N. Tonawanda, NY. Mr. Hyla is survived by his son Robert (Rebecca) Hyla; two grandchildren, Robert Hyla Jr. and Lauren Hyla; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. | 31963 | Walter T. “Tom” Philbrick, CCM, (78) of Vero Beach, FL, was summoned unexpectedly to his eternal resting place on January 12, 2019 following a brief illness. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Guy S. Philbrick. Tom graduated from LaSalle Sr. High School in Niagara Falls in 1958 lettering in football and basketball. Following high school, Tom served in the United States Marine Corp from May 5, 1959 until his honorable discharge on April 30, 1963. After his tour of duty in the Marines, he graduated in 1967 from the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado with a BSBA degree in Business Administration. For 33 years he worked in senior management positions in the private country club industry, notably the Belleair Country Club in Belleair, FL as General Manager and Assistant Secretary. He retired from professional life in 2005, then worked briefly in real estate and property management. Over the years he developed a passion for the culinary arts, enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and visiting his childhood home in Niagara Falls, NY. He was committed to his Catholic faith servicing as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Vero Beach, Above all, Tom was a devoted husband and father who gave all he had to those he loved. Tom is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Joanne (Cappello) Philbrick, one daughter, Leigh Ann (Philbrick) Valente of Mt. Dora, FL, two sons, Christopher John Philbrick of Naples, FL and Thomas Sterling Philbrick of Chesapeake, VA; one sister, Barbara L. Born in Lockport, he lived in Wilson for the past 13 years and before that in Ransomville. He was owner of the Kraatz Red and White Store in Ransomville, retiring in 1966, and had been associated with the food industry most of his life. A member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in North Ridge for 59 years, he was also a past chairman of the congregation of the church and was chairman of the dedication committee when the new church was built. She was also a lifetime member of the Charles N. De Glopper Memorial VFW Post 9249 Auxiliary and the Lewiston Senior Club. Wanda was predeceased by her husband, Michael L. Cutini, in 1983; and her brothers and sisters, Genevieve Ferguson, John Juzwicki, Stephen Juzwicki, Benjamin Juzwicki and Judith Toponak. Interior Design was not just a job to Robert, it was something he loved. His clients were not just customers, but friends. He worked in interior design for 50 years before retiring. His work took him all over the United States and Canada. Robert loved to travel and meet new people. He loved the theater and classical music. She loved cooking, gardening, traveling and interior decorating, but most of all she loved Mark, her husband of thirty-five years, their sweet Scotties, Lenny and Lucy, and her Church where she was an active participant in Sunday services, bible studies and outreach programs. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Bernice (Antoine) of Port Washington, daughter Susan (Keith) Campbell of Richfield, and sons Gary (Debra) of Port Washington and Warren (Marjorie) of Mt. Prospect, IL. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister Nancy (Paul) Swatek of Lake Geneva, and brothers Donald (Lillian) Haseley of Port Washington and Eugene (the late Betty) Haseley of Lake Geneva. Preceding him in death are two sons, Dean and Gregory, sisters Adene Haseley, Carol (the late Lawrence) Entress and Phyllis (the late Gerald) Klopp, brother Leonard “Skip” (Betty Jane) Haseley, as well as many friends and other family members. Warren was born in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, on February 17, 1922. His family moved to the Jackson/Cedarburg area before settling in Port Washington, where he graduated from high school. Warren was active in many sports and the high school band. After graduation, he entered the Army Air Corps and was stationed in San Angelo, Texas. After discharge, he attended LaCrosse State Teachers College where he was first chair trumpet in the college band. Warren graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and recreation, and later went on to receive a master’s degree in Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago. He and Bernice were married on June 17, 1950, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Lake Church, in the Town of Belgium. Warren taught at Southern Colony in Union Grove before he found a teaching position in Waukegan, IL, at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School. He taught physical education, health, and coached basketball for fourteen years before being offered an assistant principal’s position at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Port Washington in 1968. Mr. Haseley retired from education in 1986, after spending 33 years educating and nurturing teachers and students. In retirement, Warren was active in many senior programs in Port Washington: he served on the Senior Citizen Counsel, played senior softball and started the senior horseshoes’ program in town. His love of music was very important to him; Warren was a charter member of the Ozaukee County Barbershop Chorus, and played his trumpet in the New Horizons Senior band. He and Bernice delivered Meals-on-Wheels for thirty years and he also volunteered for fish fries at his parish, St. John XXIII in Port. Warren was also a longtime member of the Van Ells-Schanen American Legion Post 82 in Port Washington. Warren and Bernice were fortunate to travel to Hawaii and Austria, as well as many cities in the United States. He always expressed disbelief that he actually walked the paths in the Alps. He was amazed at all life had given him. Warren’s wife and family would like to express their deep gratitude to all the friends and family for the support and love over the last year. Special appreciation and admiration is given to the caregivers and nurses of Harbor Club/Cove; their kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. The family also thanks Heartland Hospice, especially Ann, who took such good care of the entire family, especially Dad, and helped them understand and accept this difficult journey. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, October 25th at St. John XXIII-St. Peter of Alcantara Church, 1800 N. Wisconsin St., Port Washington; Father Patrick Wendt will preside. | 31976 | Warren L. “Jerry” Broeker, of the Town of Niagara, passed from this earthly life on Friday May 20, 2016 at his residence with his family at his side and while under care of Niagara Hospice. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on December 1, 1936 the son of the late Roy C. and Vera A. (Hexemer) Broeker. Jerry was a 1954 graduate of the former LaSalle High School and in 1955 entered Wanakena State Ranger School’s general forestry curriculum graduating in February of 1956. He was employed at Kimberly Clarke for seven months before continuing his Forestry studies at Syracuse University receiving a BSA degree in Forest Management & Forest Engineering, proudly graduating in 1960. During his college studies he was employed doing survey work for Bero Construction & Railroad Waterproofing Company. Following graduation, Jerry worked in the survey crew for Johnson Drake and Piper, a heavy road contractor. In 1962 he was hired as a surveyor and quantity person with the Herbert F. Darling Engineering & Construction Company and was elevated to Superintendant in 1964, a position in which he held until his retirement in 1999. Six years following his retirement, the Herbert F. Darling Company continued to call Jerry back to assist with his expertise on their major projects during the summer. Mr. Broeker enlisted and proudly served for six years in the US Army National Guard with the 90th Artillery and later with the 174th Armored Division in Niagara Falls until his honorable discharge in 1966. On April 15, 1961 he married the former Linda Ann Hepfer and were happily married for over 50 years until her passing in March of 2015. Survivors include his four sons: Gary (Keith Cohn) of W. Hollywood, CA; Jeff of Monument, CO; Kyle (Maria) of Doylestown, PA and Shaun of Niagara Falls, NY. Grandchildren: Jeff Jr. of the Town of Tonawanda; Shelby (Rob) Donohue of Niagara Falls, NY; Matthew & Gabrielle of Monument, CO and Maxxim & Skyler of Doylestown, PA. a great-grandson Julian of the Town of Tonawanda and a sister Patti Jean (Bill) Shaefer of N. Tonawanda, NY. Also surviving is Jerry’s good friend and companion Dorothy Sorley who on May 14th of this year entered into and celebrated a Commitment Ceremony. In addition, he will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Jerry was a longtime and active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as Treasurer and at various times a trustee position for 12 years. He also served as a volunteer with the Escort Department and as the Care Van driver at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for 14 years. He was an avid enthusiast of all sports however, enjoyed participating in bowling, golf, basketball and softball. | 32000 | Warsaw NY Western New Yorker - 8/12/1922 A very pretty wedding was held at St. Mary's church on August 9th when Miss Agnes Glasner was united in marriage to Mr. Albert Brass in the presence of many friends and relatives. The bride wore a beautiful white silk crepe radium gown with white flowing veil with a varrow band of pearls holding it in place, and also carried a bouquet of white -rosebuds and sprigs of fern intermingled. She was attended by her two sisters, Miss Mable and Gert rude Glasner. Miss Gertrude wore a pink organdie dress and hat to match, while Miss Mable wore a pale green organdie with hat to match, while both carried bouquets of pink rose buds and springs of fern intermingled. The groom was attended by his two brothers, Maurice and Luke Brass, they all wore dark blue suits. A wedding breakfast was served at the bribe's home after which they left with their car for a trip to Roch ester, Buffalo, Batavia, Lancaster, Hamburg.
