The funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Piddock Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bergner, pastor of the Lorraine and Mannsville United Methodist churches, officiating. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours are Saturday at the funeral home from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Arlene) Moore, Lorraine; four stepsons, Gary Brown, Adams Center; Allen Brown, Watertown; Austin Brown, Potsdam, and Lewis Brown, Adams; 13 grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren. Mr. Bilkey was born June 20,1886, in the Town of Lorraine, son of Henry P. and Anna Fee Bilkey. He married Ethel Caulkins June 28, 1916. She died April 26, 1924. He and Mrs. Blanche Brown were wed March 12, 1956. She died Aug. 5, 1963. He operated farms in the Lorraine area until his retirement and was town supervisor from 1921-1937. Y., Sunday morning at 8:30, following a brief illness of pneu- monia, aged 22 years. Mr. Vincent was formerly a native of Cape Vincent News of his death was received Sunday evening. He was a member of the Cape Vincent Grange and was al- so a Mason. He is survived by his parents, and one brother, Lansing W. Vincent of this village. | 32057 | Watertown NY Daily Times - 1/27/1914 Clayton,, Jan 26 - Joseph H. Brabant, a lifeloug resident of this village, died suddenly at about 9 on Thuraday evening. He had attended the men's banquet at the Methodist Episoopal church, and so far as any one knew was in his usual health. After the meal was finished and be- fore the program which followed was begun, he went to the auditorium of the building where hats and coat had been left. Rev. Mr. Cheeseman assist ed him on with his overcoat, and they discussed various matters for perhaps live minutes. No mention was made by him of any physical ailment. He left the church and started alone for bis place of business in Water street, A very few minutes later he was found near the McKiuley corner. Dr. Gray was among the first to reach him, and pionounced him dead, assigning tbe cause to heart failure and diabetes. Joseph H. Brabant was born in Clay ton, the eon of Mr. and Mrs. Leander Brabant, Jan. 27, 1866. Thirty-five years ago he was united in marriage : with Miss Josephine Sharrow. Surviving him, besides his widow, are three sons, Amos Brabaut and John Brabant of Clayton, and George Brabant, now attending collage in Montreal; four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Baxinet, Mrs. Paul Tbibault, Miss Gertrude Brabant and Miss Florence Brabant,of Clayton; two brothers, Augustus F. Brabant of Clayton, and Peter F. Brabant of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Amio, Mrs. Lucy Loveland, Mrs. G. A. Thibault, and a step-sister, Mrs. Stephen Pelow, all of Clayton. Mr. Brabant waa a charter member of Thousand Island Council, No. 350 Knights of Columbus,Watertown Lodge Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Independent Order of Foresters, Maccabees, Holy Name society, a mem- her of tbe village board of education; trustee and treasurer of St. Mary's church for 20 yeare.treasurer of the Foresters and treasurer of the village of Clayton for over 25 years. Eighteen years ago he purchased the drug and grocery business of F. L. Hill, which he conducted successfully alone until about three years ago, when A. J. LeFaivre entered tbe business as a partner. "Joe"Brabant was one of tbe town's best known snd most respected citi- tens, and it is doubtful if the death of another citizen would cause more universa I and genuine regre*. He was a friend to everybody, and everybody was bis friend. He was generous to a fault Tbe needy had only to make their wants known to "Joe" Brabant He had tbe faculty of overlooking the shortcomings of his neighbors and townspeople and his money and his goods were as freely given as his sympathy. If there was ever a case of actual want in tbe town it was because "Joe" Brabant did not know of it Politically be was always a consistent Democrat; religiously he was a devout Catholic. While he had pronounced, opinions regarding his religion and his politics, be was conservative to tbe. ex- tent that his views were expressed with out offense to any one". He was tbe : soul of honor; his word was as good as his hood. "Joe"Brabant will be greatly missed in the community where he had spent his life and is best known. The funeral, which will be held from St Mary's church on Monday morning at 9.80,will be in charge of the Knights of Col ambus.- The schools wirt be closed as will also all business places during tbe funeral. Howard Ammon, 69, a retired linotype operator, was suddenly stricken with a heart attack while operat ing a snowblower at his home, 180 Ward, street, and died, apparently instantly, about 1:15 Wednesday afternoon. He was pronounced dead upon arrival by ambu lance at the House of the Good Samaritan about 1:35. Mr. Ammon had just started operating the snow removing machine in the driveway at the back of the home, then turned the blower over to a neighbor, Emery J. Len no, 178 Ward street, to do another errand, but collapsed in the snow. He had been afflicted with a heart condition. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Robert J. (Patricia I.) Denum, Hialeah, Fla.; a grandson, Michael, of Hialeah; and three sisters, Mrs. Alice K. Jones, Rome, Mrs. Freda M. Canfield, 180 Ward street, with whom he lived, and Mrs. J. Carlton /(Rose I.) Stockwell, Sackets Harbor road. A brother, Eugene Ammon of West Leyden, died in a Utica hospital Sept. 26, 1959 at the age of 72. Mr. Ammon was born at West Leyden Feb. 3, 1898, a son of George C. and Eva Briggs Ammon. His mother died Aug. 26, .1927 and his father on Aug. 11, 1938. Mr. Ammon spent the early part of his life at West Leyden, where he attended school. He came to Water- town as a young man and learned the printing trade in the shop of his brother-in- law, the late H. Harry Can- field, who operated a trade composition b u s i n e s s at Printing House Place, the location of the Hungerford-Holbrook company. He remained in employ of his brother-in-Jaw for jmanV; years, retiring about 'i960. Mr. 'Canfield,:' who retired when he^Vsold: "the. toisliiiss to Robert J. Briggs i n 1959, died Jan. 19, 1960. In 1959, he became manager of Aubrey's Thousand Island Bowling Center, Clayton. He worked there until his death. Mr. Slate was then employed by Drury Construction company and is now a heavy machine operator for the town of Clayton highway department. Malone, died of a suspected heart attack Friday afternoon when his car went off the side of the Road on Route 56 in the Town of Norfolk. The St. Lawrence County Sheriffs Department said Blanchard was heading south when his car went off the right side of the road 100 feet from the Raymondville village limits, hitting several guard rails. He was dead on arrival at the Massena Hospital, police said. Bray, 52, of 804 Bradley street, an employe of the St. Regis Paper com- pany, died this morning at 2:35 in Mercy hospital where he had been a patient since Nov. 16. Mr. Bray had been in ill heallth since suffering a cor- onary thrombosis four years ago but had been able to work most of the time until entering the hospital. Funeral will be Friday morning at 11 at the Simpson funeral home with Rev. W. Russell Clark, pastor of As- bury Methodist church, offici- ating. Committal services will be at 1:30 p.m. at the South Edwards cemetery,, South Edwards. Mr. Binninger had been at the sana- torium since Dec. 21, 1917. He was born at Dexter, son of Mr. and the late Mrs. Henry Binninger. He lived at Dexter practically all of his life. Twenty-five years ago he attended the Fort Plain Millitary school, N.Y. He was married at Dexter to the late Miss Maude Un- derwood, who died in August, 1916. Mr. Binninger was a good mechanic. He was empoyed for a time for the former firm of Binninger & Strainge at Dexter. Mrs. Dudley, who had undergone open heart surgery in a Boston hospital two years ago, was admitted to the hospital after she had, suffered a stroke at her home. Her husband, a construction lineman, is a patient in the same hospital, having been admitted March 13! She lived in Watertown and in Chicago with her parents and later at Clayton. She was married to Walter J. Dudley of Oswego in that city in September, 1947 ,and they came to Watertown to live after their marriage. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church. Lewis, one of the best known and wealthiest residents of Lewis county, died at the Hotel Belmont in New York at 9:30 Sunday night, following a week's Illness of indigestion ana ptomaine poisoning. Mr. Lewis returned from Porto Rico a week ago and was taken ill immediately on his arrival in New York. It is believed that his sojourn in the tropics had weakened his constitution so that he could not withstand the disease. Mr. Lewis was a paper manufacturer and was widely known in northern New York. Mr. Lewis was born in Northville, Fulton county, Feb. 14, 1815,a son of the late Hiram and Margaret Lewis. About 40 years ago he came to Beaver Falls, and shout 80 years ago h e became interested in the Beaver Falls Pulp & Paper Co.,the first mill in this village. At that time there was but a small settlement here, but the water power on the Weaver river afford ed a good site for a mill. In time Mr. Lewis acquired the sole ownership of. this mill and continued to own it until the time of his death. In later years Mr. Lewis became instrumental in organizing other paper mills, the Lewis, Slocum and LeFevre pulp mill and the J. P. Lewis Pulp & Paper Co.,in both of which Mr. Lewis was a heavy stockholder. It was through the agency ot these mills that the village of Beaver Falls grew to a population of about 500, the mills being tbe only industry in town, and in them the greater part of the male population of the town was employed. Mr. Lewis was also president of the Thousand Island Park Association. Mr. Lewis was married to Miss Julia E. Slocum several years ago and she died a year ago last October, He is survived by one son, Harry F. Lewis, of this village, who is connected with the paper industry here;one daughter, Mrs. Grace L. Cornwall, of Detroit, wbo was married last November; and three sisters, Mrs. A. N. Van Armam, Mrs. Emeline LeFevre and Miss Ella Lewis, all of Beaver Falls. Mr. Lewis had served as supervisor from the town of Croghan and had also been water commissioner of Beaver Falls. - Last January Mr. Lewis went to Porto Rico on a pleasure trip and returned to New York Iast Monday. He was taken sick immediately on his arrival in New York and his condition became serious. With him when he died were his son and daughter. The body will arrive here today where the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon. After her husband's death on Sept. 26. 1959, Mrs. Ammon continued to live on the farm until her illness. Burial was at Glens Falls. Born at Piercefield in 1900. son of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Desjardins, he worked as an electrician for the Interna- tional Paper Co. at its plant in that village before moving to Glens Falls about 40 years ago. His first wife, Elizabeth Peno D e s j a r d i n s , died in 1961. He is survived by his second wife. Bray. 77, of 321 Ford avenue, who died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday in Pritchard pavilion of St. Law- rence State hospital where he had been a patient five weeks, was held this morning at the Lalonde-Briggs fu- neral home and Notre Dame church at 9. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margaret M. Bray; a daugh- ter, Mrs. Patrick W. O'Grady, Odgdensburg; three sons, Robert W., Ogdensburg; Richard A., Mohawk; John J. Bray, Cincinnati, O.; a sister, Mrs. Rena Miller, Fremont,, Calif.; a brother, Leo, Punta Gorda, Fla., and 13 grand- children. Mr. Bray was born in Og- densburg, Sept. 30, 1887, a son of Andrew and Caroline Boyer Bray. In 1919, he mar- ried Miss Margaret Jacobs at St. Mary's cathedral. The late Rt. Rev. Msgr. Edmund J. Brown officiated. Mr. Bray formerly was a marine engineer on the Great Lakes. In 1932, he joined the customs service, to which he was appointed by the late John C. Tulloch, former col- lector of St. Lawrence District 7, and served 15 years in the headquarters office. He later served as a customs inspector in Cincinnati. O.. ten years. He retired in 1957. Mrs. Brahant's maiden name was Katharine Alice LaLonde, and she was born in Ogdensburg 47 year* ago. In 1886 she was married to Mr. Brabant, and came to Clayton to reside. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, Lucy, and four brothers, Clifford and Henry LaLonde. of Fulton, George LaLonde. of Watertown. and Charles LaLonde, of Cleveland, Ohio. Amo, 65, of 545 Theresa St., died Friday evening at 6:45 in the Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay, where he had been a patient since May 23. The funeral will be Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Cum mings Funeral Home, Clay- ton and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Besides his wife, Mrs. Nina G. LeClair Aamo, he is sur- vived by two brothers, Her- bert Amo, Watertown, and Gordon Amo, Santa Barbara, Calif.; nieces and nephews. Born June 20, 1903, at Clayton, a son of Louis and Anna Brabant Amo, he attended St. Mary's School and for the past year had been employed as school bus driver, transporting pupils from Clayton to Watertown to attend Im maculate Heart Central School. He was a former employe of the New York Air Brake Co., Watertown, and of the Frink Sno Plow Co., Clayton. On May 5. 1934, he married Miss Nina LaClair of Canton at St. Mary's Church. The ceremony was performed by Rev. George E. Racette. Mr. Amo was a member of Thousand Islands Council,, Knights of Columbus,, Fourth Degree, and the Northern New York Volunteer Fire- men's Association. | 32100 | Watertown NY Daily Times - 5/27/1925 Natural Bridge, May 27.-Just how Melvin Bray, ??-year-old oiler came to be caught between the pinion and the 50-toot gear under- neath the rotary kiln and cooler at the plant of the Basic Refractories corporation, which resulted in his death here yesterday morning, will never be known. This was revealed at an inquest held at the company's office by Dis- trict Attorney E.. R.. Wilcox late yesterday afternoon. There was no eye witnesses to the fatal acci- dent. Six employes of the company testified at the inquest and each said that he did not see his fellow workman become entangled in the year and meet death. The inquest showed that Bray was not oiling the machinery at the time. His oil can was about three feet from the pinion and gear. The pinion and gear work upwards, an investigattion showed, and the bot- tom of the pinion ger which con- nects with the big 50-tooth year is only eleven inches from the ground. It was in this small space that Bray's right arm was caught. His arm was worn from its socket, his head was dragged between the teeth of the pinion and the big gear and mangled badly. The acci- dent resulted in the power being shut out instantly. Basti Cooper,, brother-in-law of Bray, was the first attracted to the scene. He was his relative lying on the ground under- neath the pinion and then spread the alarm to other workmen in the place, saying "Mel is caught in the machinery and is dying." When the workmen arrived Bray was dead. It is believed that he was killed almost instantly. Eward Van Tassel, foreman; Ar- thur J.. Sechrist,, superintentent; Ora Pack,, burner; Glen Williams, machinist, and Paul andrus and Everett Peck, laborers, were worn at the hearing. All testified that Bray wa a temperate man and of a pleasant disposition. District Attorney Wilcox is of the brlief that Bray slipped as he was walking by the pinion and gear and fell underneath. The district at- torney declared that it was not a suicide. The wife of the ded man said that he left the house at 7 yes- terday morning in the best of spirits and that they never had any serious quarrels. The deceaed was the main sup- port of a family of 13 children. Six were his children by his first wife while his second wife had five chil- dren when he married her. It also was her second marriage. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Bray since their marriage five years ago. Bray earned $21 a week at the plant where he had been em- ployed for four years. | BRAY, Melvin (I168014)
