George Stewart Benham, aged 41,
only son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward H.
Benham of Clifton Springs, N. Y., was
instantly killed on Wednesday evening,
Sept. 5, near Olcott Beach, in an
automobile accident. Mr. Benham
was a resident of Newfane, N. Y., but
had charge of a garage at Lockport,
N. Y.
He and two other men from the
garage were testing out an eight cylinder
car when the accident occurred.
The road was new to Mr. Benham
and he mistook the soldiers' monument
for the end of the road, and applied
his emergency brake, which resulted
in the car skiding and hitting a telegrph
pole. His companions jumped
and escaped with minor injuries, but
Mr. Benham was pinned underneath
the car.
Mr. Benham was a nurse by profession,
having graduated from the
Buffalo State hospital in 1895, and followed
his profession until a few
months ago when he went into the
garage business.
The remains were brought to the
home of his parents in Clifton Springs
where the funeral services were held
on Saturday afternoon at 3:30, Rev.
D. S. Wilson conducting the services.
Interment in the Clifton Springs cemetery
on Pearl street
The deceased is survived by a wife
and two daughters, Misses Hazel and
Mildred Benham, of Newfane. N. Y.,
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Benham
of Clifton Springs, N Y., four
sisters, Mrs John M. Walters and Miss
Jennie Benham of Clifton Springs,
Mrs. L. Paul Webb of Syracuse and
Mrs. G. Ralph Huested of Mannsville,
N. Y.
Mr. Benham was of a bright and
cheerful disposition and will be sadly
missed by a large circle of friends
Note - George listed in 1910 census as widow living in Buffalo with "Stella Wilson" and her sister Grace Culver - this would indicate Stella Wilson was, in fact, Stella Tillotson since Stella Tillotson's sister was Grace Culver
