Niagara Falls today lost one of its. best-known
sports figures.
Milton W. Krum of 210 60th St., freshman coach at
NiagaraUniversity died at home shortly after midnight.
An-inhalator was called at 12:41 a.m. after Mr. Krum
awakened with a pain in.his chest He was pronounced
dead by a physician called to the house. ,.
Coach Krum devoted his life to sports.
He joined the NU coaching
staff for; the 1960-61 school
year. At that time, he had
been a high school coach for
34 years.
He was born in Buffalo. He
attended North' Tonawanda
High School and was graduated
from C e n t r a l High
School, Springfield,. Mass. A
s t a r athlete, Krum played
varsity football, basketball and
was on the swimming and
track squads.-
Before 1922, he had worked
as a desk clerk at the North
Tonawanda YMGA, and served
as instructor at that city's
playgrounds and as a physical
a i r e c t o r ' for the Buffalo
YMCA, a camp counselor and
an assistant camp director for
the same organization.
In 1926 he graduated from
Springfield College, Springfield,
Mass. with a bachelor's
degree in physical education.
At college he played varsity
football and baseball and was
on the swimming team. He
played intramural" basketball
and went out for boxing and
t r a c k .
He instructed freshman gymnasium
and football arid be
came an instructor arid life
guard in the college pool and
worked as an assistant high
school sports director.
After college, he became director
.of'• health and physical
education at Bucksport Seminary,
Bucksport, Maine. There
he coached football, basketball,
"baseball and track. He
originated health and hygiene
programs.
In 1928, he accepted the
post of director of health and
physical education in Rocky
River, Ohio, public schools.
He resigned i n 1930 to accept"
a postgraduate .scholarship'
at the; University of Alabama,
but financial reverses
forced him to forego it in
favor of a job as instructor in
classroom,; gymnasium and
swimming for e l e m e n t a ry
classes of the Niagara Falls
school system.
In 1031 he transferred to
LaSalle Junior-Senior High
School where he developed
the physical and health education
program. He coached all
sports and developed an intramural
p r o g r a m . He coauthored
the present swimming
program in city schools.
He stayed, at LaSalle until
1946, 'whenhe entered Niagara
University, to do postgraduate
work toward his'masters degree.
He worked. as a trainer
of the varsity football team.
At the same time, he was
director of health and physical
education at Trott Vocational
High School and coached
the basketball and baseball
teams.
From 1956 to 1960 he was
at LaSalle Senior High School
Where he was chairman, of
the health, physical education
and athletic departments.
He was swimming coach and
taught healh and instructed
in gym and pool.
At Trott, his teams won two
Class A sectional championships,
At N i a g a r a University,
where he started as trainer
of basikethall,: brack and base-,
ball, he. succeeded Lloyd Patr
terson. He later was varsity
baseball vcoach and freshman
basketball coach.. He directed
intramural sports.
He was a member of Niagara
Frontier Lodge No. 132,
F&AM;' the. Zion; Lutheran
Church and the LaSalle Yacht
Club.
Surviving are his wife Mrs.
Louise B. Krum; a dauaghter,,
Mrs. James Heller, Berne,
N. Y.,: abrother Earl Krum,
Auburn, and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be
held at 2 p.m. Friday at Cooler's
Funeral Home with Rev.
Arthur H. Schmoyer officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial
Park Cemetery.
